Educational Resources

The Minnesota Humanities Center is excited to offer resources that have been developed and created in partnership with community organizations from across the state.  These resources have been carefully curated to help educators increase classroom engagement through the amplification of Absent Narratives.

Absent Narratives Resource Collection

The Absent Narratives Resource Collection is a searchable database of ready-to-use videos, teacher guides, and readings that will support your efforts to include Absent Narratives in your classroom or workplace. Items included in the resource collection have been created or developed by the Humanities Center and its partners. New resources will be added as they become available.

Bdote Memory Map

The Bdote Memory Map began as a part of the "City Indians" multi-media installation at Ancient Traders Gallery on Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis in 2005. (Learn more at http://www.alliesmediaart.com). On one wall of the gallery a large, stylized, painted map of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area (centered on the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers) invited visitors to add their own written memories and stories of traditional Dakota sites to the map. A small number of traditional sites were shown on the map by Dakota name and historical photograph. This resource provides better understanding about the Dakota people's relationship to Minnesota. Educator materials are included.

Absent Narratives Videos

Minnesota is home to many rich, complimentary, and sometimes contradictory narratives. All these accounts attempt to make meaning of this place, its residents, and its histories. The narratives on this page are intended to expand your knowledge, understanding, and empathy for the people who live here. Challenge yourself with these narratives.
