DESCRIPTION:The We Are Water MN traveling exhibit examines water issues statewide and in local communities through personal stories\, histories\, and scientific information. It strengthens Minnesotans’ relationships with water\, exposes visitors to new perspectives\, and increases participation in water stewardship activities. \nHost Partner: MN DNR Itasca State Park and U of M Itasca Biological Station \nAs we reach the height of summer in Minnesota\, We Are Water MN travels north to a deeply significant site for water in our state: the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi River! The water found at Lake Itasca begins here and flows on its winding way 2552 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. Join the thousands of visitors from all over the state\, country\, and world this summer and see the We Are Water MN exhibit next to the serenity and natural beauty of Lake Itasca\, a national landmark. \nThis hosting will be within Itasca State Park\, run by the DNR\, and co-led by the U of M Itasca Biological Station\, an active field station devoted to research and teaching on how ecosystems work\, with an eye to cultivating an appreciation of their value and preservation for future generations. SUMMARY:St. Paul - We the People Summer Institute for High School Educators
DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota Humanities Center (MHC)\, in partnership with the Center for Civic Education\, is seeking a small group of Minnesota high school educators to participate in the We the People Summer Institute\, a fully funded professional learning opportunity taking place July 13–17\, 2026\, at MHC in Saint Paul. \nAs the Minnesota State Coordinator for We the People and Project Citizen\, MHC is working to expand civic education opportunities for educators and students across the state. \nThis immersive week-long institute will bring together educators from Minnesota and several other states to explore constitutional content\, inquiry-based teaching strategies\, and the nationally recognized We the People program. Participants will engage with constitutional scholars\, learn best practices for simulated congressional hearings\, and join a network of educators committed to strengthening civic learning. \nThe Summer Institute is intended for educators who are interested in exploring implementation of the We the People curriculum with students following the training. \nEducator Benefits\n\nA free classroom set of We the People textbooks\nContent and instruction from constitutional scholars and civic education experts\nOngoing mentorship and implementation support\nAccess to a national professional learning community\nOpportunities to participate in Minnesota We the People Student Showcase experiences\n52 Continuing Education Units (CEUs)\n\nEligibility\n\nHigh school government\, civics\, and history teachers\nEducators new to the We the People program or who have not participated within the past five years\n\nThe Center for Civic Education is a nonprofit\, nonpartisan organization dedicated to promoting informed and engaged citizenship through civic education. SUMMARY:Minneapolis - Learning from Place: Somali South Minneapolis
DESCRIPTION:South Minneapolis is home to a vibrant corridor of Somali owned businesses\, cultural institutions\, and public art that reflect the community’s resilience\, cultural pride\, and contributions to Minneapolis. This Learning from Place experience begins at the Somali Museum\, where participants will learn about Somali cultural heritage and\, if scheduling allows\, experience traditional dance. The group will then take a short walk to Hoyo Sambusa to sample sambusa and watch a cooking demonstration\, where founder Mariam will share the story behind her social enterprise and the cultural significance of sambusa in Somali homes and gatherings. \nParticipants will continue along the Lake Street corridor with mural artist Guulsan\, who will guide a mural walk and share the stories and inspiration behind his artwork\, offering insight into how public art expresses community identity and shapes how stories of place are remembered and shared. Along the way\, the group will visit Zizi Boutique\, celebrating its 10-year anniversary\, to learn about Somali fashion and clothing. The experience concludes at the bustling iconic Karmel Mall\, a central marketplace for Somali businesses\, where participants can explore the shops and continue reflection over warm chai. \nK-12 Educators will receive 3 clock hours upon completion of the event. \nThis experience is curated by Yusra Mohamud\, as a longtime connector within South Minneapolis’s East African community\, Yusra brings a rare combination of deep cultural roots and a gift for storytelling that transforms corridors into living narratives of resilience\, identity\, and belonging. \nRegistration\nTo ensure that cost is not a barrier\, we have a limited number of complimentary spaces available for Minnesota residents. SUMMARY:Red Wing - Sketches of Minnesota
DESCRIPTION:Join the Minnesota Humanities Center\, Danger Boat Productions\, and the Red Wing Community for the Sketches of Minnesota civic improv comedy tour! These free events use laughter and comedy to celebrate Minnesota communities\, promote dialogue\, bridge divides\, and help find ways to work constructively across differences in today’s political environment. \nBeginning with a catered meal\, these gatherings invite audience members to share what makes their town great\, what they think people get wrong about it\, what local divisions concern them\, and what future they imagine. SUMMARY:Online - Storied Objects and Ekphrasis with Lester Batiste
DESCRIPTION:This online workshop for youth poets (ages 13-19) will introduce students to the Ekphrastic poetic idea which will help us reflect on\, harmonize\, remember\, and move through particular points of American history centering visual objects. By exploring the poetry of Nikki Finney\, Sasha Pimentel\, Kimberly Reyes\, and John Keats\, students will get a taste of different types of ekphrasis based on pictures\, paintings\, sculptures\, short films\, and other forms of visual art.  This workshop will culminate in poets creating their own ekphrastic pieces based on the Smithsonian Folklife Festival of Sacred Object Collection. Students will provide a narrative for their visual artworks in order to turn the visual into the verbal or create a poem. \nLester A. Batiste is a savage writer in living color who writes for political\, social\, economic change and Black futures. Born in Chicago\, IL\, he holds an MFA from the University of Southern Maine’s Stonecoast writing program\, and an M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania. Influenced by Gwendolyn Brooks\, Carl Sandburg\, and Toni Morrison\, Lester strives to weave traditional forms and techniques with the vibrancy of African American experience and speech. Rich details are enhanced by the musical tones from Lester’s childhood on the Southside of Chicago to his present on the Northside of Minneapolis. Lester’s work has appeared in print in The Stone House Anthology (2014)\, the Southern Griot Journal (2012)\, Tulane Review (2017)\, A Garden of Black Joy (2020)\, and digitally in the Brushfire Literary and Arts Journal (2020)\, Hidden Peak Press (2022)\, The Indianapolis Review (2023)\, and The Bitchin’ Kitsch (2023). In 2025\, he received the BIPOC Emerging Writer award from Blue Earth Review. Lester’s debut poetry collection\, Angel and Night’s Youngest\, is forthcoming with the Black Spring Press Group (UK). \nThis workshop is part of Voices Forward\, a poetry and public humanities initiative for emerging youth poets (ages 13-19) from across Minnesota. Poets will explore the Smithsonian Folklife Festival’s themes: Remembering Together\, Harmonizing Together\, Moving Together\, and Building Together. \nBy the People: Conversations Beyond 250 is a series of community-driven programs created by humanities councils in collaboration with local partners.
