DESCRIPTION:The We Are Water MN traveling exhibit examines water issues statewide and in local communities through personal stories\, histories\, and scientific information. It strengthens Minnesotans’ relationships with water\, exposes visitors to new perspectives\, and increases participation in water stewardship activities. \nHost Partner: Great River Arts \nAs the summer comes to a close and fall sets in\, join We Are Water MN at Great River Arts (GRA) in Little Fall\, where creativity meets community. GRA exists to enrich lives through the arts and become the art hub for the Morrison County area\, playing a significant role in sustaining the community’s artistic and economic vibrancy. From live theater and music performances to continuous visual art exhibits\, art classes for youth and adults\, and now the We Are Water MN exhibit\, come see how all of the wonderful things that happen when water and art meet! \nWe are especially excited that the exhibit will be in town during the annual and always highly anticipated Little Falls Arts and Crafts Fair\, September 12-13. SUMMARY:Online - Pedagogy Session – World History Eras: Teaching Through Inquiry
DESCRIPTION:Building on the big questions\, historical thinking\, and resources introduced in the Content Session\, experienced classroom educators will lead a hands-on workshop focused on applying the inquiry-based instructional framework that will guide the World History Eras series. Participants will explore the unit planning template\, examine standards-aligned approaches to instruction\, and begin developing compelling and supporting questions that will serve as the foundation for teaching each era. \nAll Pedagogy Sessions will be held via Zoom. Educators who participate in all Pedagogy Sessions will leave the year with a complete World History course aligned to the new social studies standards. \nEducators are encouraged to participate in companion Content Sessions\, which provide the historical content and sources that inform instruction for each era. \nThis offering is part of Navigating the World History Eras: Content\, Pedagogy\, and Inquiry in the Classroom\, a yearlong professional learning opportunity presented by MHC and MDE that supports implementation of Minnesota’s 2021 K–12 Academic Standards in Social Studies. \nK-12 Educators will receive 1.5 clock hours upon completion of the event. \nRegistration\nPedagogy Sessions are designed for high school World History teachers and may also be relevant for 8th grade educators. Educators are welcome to register for individual sessions that align with their interests and schedules. Join us for one or more sessions throughout the year. \nThis event is free\, however registration is required. SUMMARY:Lanesboro - Minnesota Writers Off the Page: Thomas Maltman
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging evening with Thomas Maltman and his newest novel\, Ashes to Ashes\, winner of the 2026 Minnesota Book Award for Novel/Short Story. Unfolding over the course of Lent\, and against a background of rural ministry and ancient mythology\, the novel tells the story of three teenagers in small town Minnesota\, each dealing with their own personal trials. Maltman will be joined in conversation by fellow writer and Minnesota Book Award winner Mubanga Kalimamukwento\, on what about Minnesota inspires authors\, and in particular how Vikings\, magical realism\, and mysticism make for gripping storytelling. Following the discussion\, audience members are invited to participate in a Q&A session and have further informal conversation with the featured speakers. Light refreshments will be provided\, copies of Ashes to Ashes will be available for purchase\, and the evening will finish with a book signing. \nThomas Maltman’s first novel\, The Night Birds\, won an Alex Award\, a Spur Award\, and the Friends of American Writers Literary Award. In 2009\, the American Library Association chose The Night Birds as an “Outstanding Book for the College Bound.” Little Wolves\, his second novel\, won the All Iowa Reads selection in 2014. His third novel\, The Land\, was published in 2020. In July of 2025\, Soho Press published his fourth novel\, Ashes to Ashes\, which was the winner of the 2026 MN Book Awards for Novel/Short Story. He teaches at Normandale Community College and lives in the Twin Cities area with his wife\, a Lutheran pastor\, and his three daughters. \nMubanga Kalimamukwento was born in Lusaka\, Zambia. Her creative work has appeared or is forthcoming in adda\, Aster(ix)\, Contemporary Verse 2\, Kweli\, Overland\, The Ex-Puritan\, Menelique\, on Netflix\, and elsewhere\, and her editorial work can be found or is forthcoming in Shenandoah\, the Water~Stone Review\, Doek! Literary Magazine\, and Safundi. Her book\, Obligations to the Wounded\, was the winner of the 2025 Minnesota Book Awards for Novel/Short Story\, amongst other honors. She founded Ubwali Literary Magazine and co-founded the Idembeka Creative Writing Workshop. When she’s not writing or editing\, Mubanga serves as a Mentor at the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop. She is a PhD student in the Department of Gender\, Women & Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota (Twin-Cities)\, where she is also an Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change (ICGC) Scholar. Mubanga lives in Minnesota with her husband and their two children. \nThis event is presented in partnership with Garden Party Books\, an independent bookstore in Rochester\, Minnesota\, that celebrates reading\, books\, and the community. \nThis event is part of the Minnesota Writers Off the Page series\, bringing the inspirational voices of Minnesota’s authors directly to readers. \nRegistration\nThis event has been postponed.
