DESCRIPTION:The We Are Water MN traveling exhibit examines water issues statewide and in local communities through personal stories\, histories\, and scientific information. It strengthens Minnesotans’ relationships with water\, exposes visitors to new perspectives\, and increases participation in water stewardship activities. \nHost Partner: Great River Arts \nAs the summer comes to a close and fall sets in\, join We Are Water MN at Great River Arts (GRA) in Little Fall\, where creativity meets community. GRA exists to enrich lives through the arts and become the art hub for the Morrison County area\, playing a significant role in sustaining the community’s artistic and economic vibrancy. From live theater and music performances to continuous visual art exhibits\, art classes for youth and adults\, and now the We Are Water MN exhibit\, come see how all of the wonderful things that happen when water and art meet! \nWe are especially excited that the exhibit will be in town during the annual and always highly anticipated Little Falls Arts and Crafts Fair\, September 12-13. Anoka County Libraries exist to serve their communities and connect them to resources and learning\, and We Are Water MN is no exception\, bringing water education and engagement to the library. Fun fact: Anoka County is the 4th largest county in the state of Minnesota\, comprised of over 360\,000 residents! Libraries are naturally places people go to learn\, and we look forward to seeing the many water related resources\, books\, book discussions\, and beyond! \nThough most of the programming at Northtown will happen indoors\, the library also features beautiful outdoor grounds\, with a pond and Shoreline Buffer Garden that are on library premises. The event is kicked off by keynote speaker Kao Kalia Yang\, author of Where Rivers Part and winner of the 2025 Minnesota Book Award in the memoir category. After the keynote\, explore the exhibit\, visit the water tasting bar\, and learn about water issues from community partners Coon Creek Watershed District\, City of Spring Lake Park\, Anoka County Transportation\, MN Department of Agriculture\, and Anoka Conservation District. \nSchedule of Events: \n10:30 a.m. Keynote by Minnesota Author Kao Kalia Yang\n10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Visit a Street Sweeper & Snow Plow\n11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Nitrate Well Water Testing – Run your water for at least 5 minutes and bring a 1 cup cold sample in a solid sealed container\n11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Water Bar Tasting\n12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Pond Dipping – Identify tiny pond creatures with a magnifying glass \nKao Kalia Yang is the writer of of Where Rivers Part and winner of the 2025 Minnesota Book Award in the memoir category. Additionally\, she is the author of the memoirs The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir\, The Song Poet\, and Somewhere in the Unknown World. Yang is also the author of the children’s books A Map Into the World\, The Shared Room\, The Most Beautiful Thing\, Yang Warriors\, and From the Tops of the Trees. She co-edited the ground-breaking collection What God is Honored Here?: Writings on Miscarriage and Infant Loss By and For Native Women and Women of Color. Yang’s work has been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the National Book Critics Circle Award\, the Chautauqua Prize\, the PEN USA literary awards\, the Dayton’s Literary Peace Prize\, as Notable Books by the American Library Association\, Kirkus Best Books of the Year\, the Heartland Bookseller’s Award\, and garnered four Minnesota Book Awards. There will be a treasure hunt\, Spanish vocabulary practice\, music\, and activities with Minda Gomez\, author of Treasure of the North\, the fourth book in the Martinez Kids Adventures book series! Their family has created their own brand of “Mexigringo” as they blend their Papi’s Mexican culture with their Mami’s Minnesotan culture. Minda is a teacher of English Learners at a local elementary school. She has taught second grade in Mexico and volunteered in Guatemala\, Peru\, and other parts of Latin America. Minda is passionate about teaching children to be proud of their bilingual superpowers. SUMMARY:Blaine - Grounded in History: How Geology Informs Today's Water Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Learn about how glaciers impacted the surface geology of Anoka County! Geologist Carrie Jennings will describe how tunnels beneath ice sheets and ice-dammed lakes left a legacy on our surface and groundwater. \nCarrie Jennings is dedicated to translating science into policy and action to preserve water resources for Freshwater\, a 52-year-old Minnesota non-profit. A licensed professional geologist\, she applies her understanding of geology and hydrogeology to policy to reduce surface-water pollution and improve groundwater sustainability. \nAnoka County Library strives to ensure that all visitors are able to access library resources\, services\, and programs.
