SUMMARY:Online - Content Session – World History Era Five A: Revolutions\, Empires\, and Nations (1750–1900)
DESCRIPTION:Explore the revolutionary transformations that reshaped the Atlantic World during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries\, examining how slavery\, resistance\, empire\, and struggles for freedom changed societies on both sides of the Atlantic. Dr. Vincent Brown will present his scholarship\, drawing on primary and secondary sources to examine how these movements reshaped political\, social\, and cultural life while leaving enduring legacies that continue to influence the world today. Dr. Katharine Gerbner\, historian and scholarly lead for this series\, will facilitate a conversation with Dr. Brown exploring key themes and perspectives from this era. This session provides historical context\, source analysis\, and thematic framing for teaching this era\, with opportunities for participant questions and discussion. \n\n\n\n\n\n+View Vincent Brown’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nVincent Brown is a historian of the African diaspora and the Atlantic world. He is the David Brion Davis Professor of History at Yale University and previously served as the Charles Warren Professor of American History at Harvard University. His research explores the histories of slavery\, resistance\, memory\, and the interconnected worlds created through the Atlantic slave trade. Brown is the author of the award-winning books The Reaper’s Garden: Death and Power in the World of Atlantic Slavery and Tacky’s Revolt: The Story of an Atlantic Slave War. He is also a filmmaker and co-founder of Timestamp Media\, using digital storytelling and visual media to explore histories that connect people and places across the globe. \n\n\n\n\n\nAll Content Sessions will be held via Zoom and supported through a Minnesota Department of Education (MDE)-hosted Canvas learning community. Registered participants will have access to session recordings\, curated resources\, and collaborative planning tools through the Canvas course. \n\n\nHigh school World History teachers and 8th grade educators are encouraged to participate in companion Pedagogy Sessions\, which explore inquiry-based instructional approaches and classroom applications for each era. \n\nThis offering is part of Navigating the World History Eras: Content\, Pedagogy\, and Inquiry in the Classroom\, a yearlong professional learning opportunity presented by MHC and MDE that supports implementation of Minnesota’s 2021 K–12 Academic Standards in Social Studies. \n\nK-12 Educators will receive 1.5 clock hours upon completion of the event. \n\nRegistration\nContent Sessions are open to all K–12 educators interested in historical content and source-based instruction. Educators are welcome to register for individual sessions that align with their interests and schedules. Join us for one or more sessions throughout the year. \n\nThis event is free\, however registration is required. SUMMARY:Online - Feedback—Improving Source Work
DESCRIPTION:Focus on strengthening how sources are selected\, used\, and taught. Participants will explore strategies for helping teachers move beyond surface-level source activities\, and primary source work that confirms pre-taught narratives towards using sources as evidence\, perspective\, and tools for reasoning. Emphasis will be placed on improving opportunities for student analysis and argumentation. \nThe Minnesota Department of Education\, in partnership with the Minnesota Humanities Center\, will host virtual sessions to support implementation of the 2021 K-12 Academic Standards in Social Studies\, held monthly during the 2026–27 school year. These sessions are open to anyone with building or district-level responsibilities for curriculum planning and development in all social studies content areas\, including curriculum directors\, department leads\, and teachers. Pre-registration is required for all sessions. \nK-12 Educators will receive 1 clock hour upon completion of the session. \nRegistration\nThis event is free\, however registration through the Minnesota Department of Education is required.
