SUMMARY:Online - Content Session – World History Era Five B: Revolutions\, Empires\, and Nations (1750–1900)
DESCRIPTION:Examine how revolutions\, imperial expansion\, and social change unfolded across Latin America\, the Ottoman Empire\, and South Asia\, highlighting the diverse experiences of people living through this transformative era. Dr. Katharine Gerbner\, historian and scholarly lead for this series\, will facilitate a conversation with historians Sarah Chambers\, Zozan Pehlivan\, and Ajay Skaria\, who will each present their scholarship\, drawing on primary and secondary sources to explore regional perspectives on independence\, empire\, and the enduring legacies of nineteenth-century global change. This session provides historical context\, source analysis\, and thematic framing for teaching this era\, with opportunities for participant questions and discussion. \n\n\n\n\n+View Sarah Chamber’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nSarah C. Chambers is Professor and Chair of History at the University of Minnesota. She teaches about Latin American history\, as well as colonialism\, gender\, and film more broadly. Her research (conducted in Peru\, Chile\, Spain\, Puerto Rico and Colombia) explores political culture\, citizenship\, and law during Spanish America’s transition from colonialism to independence (late 18th to mid 19th centuries). She is currently working on migrations spurred by the Wars of Independence in South America\, tracing the paths of internal refugees\, political exiles\, and royalist émigrés\, and analyzing their influence on shifting imperial and national identities. She is also co-editing a multi-volume primary source collection on “Latin America in the Age of Revolution\, 1763-1830” for Routledge. In addition to articles and book chapters in English and Spanish\, she has published books on Peru and Chile. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n+View Zozan Pehlivan’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nZozan Pehlivan is the Arsham & Charlotte Ohanessian Chair and Associate Professor of History at the University of Minnesota\, Twin Cities. Her scholarship and teaching focus on global environmental history\, animal history\, Indigenous histories\, the history of technology and medicine\, and public health. \n\nDr. Pehlivan is the author of The Political Ecology of Violence: Peasants and Pastoralists in the Last Ottoman Century (Cambridge University Press\, 2024)\, which examines the relationships among climate change\, ecological change\, economic inequality\, and Ottoman state policy in the emergence of intercommunal violence in the late nineteenth-century Middle East. The book received the Ottoman Turkish Studies Association’s 2024 Book Award. \n\nHer research has been recognized with the Harry Frank Guggenheim Distinguished Scholar Award\, a McKnight Land-Grant Professorship\, and Mellon Fellowships at the Newberry Library and the Linda Hall Library. She is currently developing two books on imperial resettlement\, environmental history\, vaccination\, and public health in the Ottoman Empire. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n+View Ajay Skaria’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nAjay Skaria began as a journalist in India and now teaches in the Department of History and Institute for Global Studies at the University of Minnesota. His early research focused primarily on Indian environmental and Adivasi history. More recently\, he has writing on the intellectual and epistemic history of democracy; the politics of modern caste; Hindu nationalism; and historical theory. He is the author of two books: Hybrid Histories: Forests\, Frontiers and Wildness in Western India and Unconditional Equality: Gandhi’s Religion of Resistance\, and has co-edited three books. He is currently working on two books: Thinking With Gandhi and Ambedkar and Neighborism and Democracy: An Epistemic History. \n\n\n\n\n\nAll Content Sessions will be held via Zoom and supported through a Minnesota Department of Education (MDE)-hosted Canvas learning community. Registered participants will have access to session recordings\, curated resources\, and collaborative planning tools through the Canvas course. \n\n\nHigh school World History teachers and 8th grade educators are encouraged to participate in companion Pedagogy Sessions\, which explore inquiry-based instructional approaches and classroom applications for each era. \n\nThis offering is part of Navigating the World History Eras: Content\, Pedagogy\, and Inquiry in the Classroom\, a yearlong professional learning opportunity presented by MHC and MDE that supports implementation of Minnesota’s 2021 K–12 Academic Standards in Social Studies. \n\nK-12 Educators will receive 1.5 clock hours upon completion of the event. \n\nRegistration\nContent Sessions are open to all K–12 educators interested in historical content and source-based instruction. Educators are welcome to register for individual sessions that align with their interests and schedules. Join us for one or more sessions throughout the year. \n\nThis event is free\, however registration is required. SUMMARY:Online - Feedback—Improving Formative Tasks
DESCRIPTION:Examine how formative tasks can be used to build and monitor disciplinary thinking throughout a unit. Participants will learn how to give feedback on and refine formative activities that make student reasoning visible\, and support instructional adjustment in real time. \nThe Minnesota Department of Education\, in partnership with the Minnesota Humanities Center\, will host virtual sessions to support implementation of the 2021 K-12 Academic Standards in Social Studies\, held monthly during the 2026–27 school year. These sessions are open to anyone with building or district-level responsibilities for curriculum planning and development in all social studies content areas\, including curriculum directors\, department leads\, and teachers.
