SUMMARY:Online - Evaluating Summative Tasks for Rigor and Authenticity
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to evaluate summative tasks for true rigor and disciplinary alignment. Participants will analyze whether tasks genuinely require students to engage in disciplinary reasoning\, use evidence from sources\, and demonstrate authentic understanding. This session focuses on strengthening task quality and coherence. \nThe Minnesota Department of Education\, in partnership with the Minnesota Humanities Center\, will host virtual sessions to support implementation of the 2021 K-12 Academic Standards in Social Studies\, held monthly during the 2026–27 school year. These sessions are open to anyone with building or district-level responsibilities for curriculum planning and development in all social studies content areas\, including curriculum directors\, department leads\, and teachers. Pre-registration is required for all sessions. \nK-12 Educators will receive 1 clock hour upon completion of the session. \nRegistration\nThis event is free\, however registration through the Minnesota Department of Education is required. SUMMARY:Online - Content Session – World History Era Two: Cities\, Societies\, and Empires
DESCRIPTION:Explore the emergence of cities\, societies\, and empires across Africa\, Asia\, and the Americas while examining how religious\, political\, technological\, and social developments shaped the ancient world. Dr. Katharine Gerbner\, historian and scholarly lead for this series\, will facilitate a conversation with historians Ranjani Atur\, Andrew Gallia\, and James Laine\, who will each present their scholarship\, drawing on primary and secondary sources to explore the diverse ways historians reconstruct these societies and the narratives those sources help construct. This session provides historical context\, source analysis\, and thematic framing for teaching this era\, with opportunities for participant questions and discussion. \n\n\n\n\n\n+View Ranjani Atur’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nRanjani Atur is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Religions and Cultures at the University of Minnesota\, Twin Cities. She specializes in Ancient Mediterranean religions\, religious materiality\, and comparative polytheisms. Ranjani’s research focuses on the role of material objects (statues\, vases\, etc.) and landscapes (shrines\, temples\, etc.) in shaping religious practices and beliefs in ancient Greece as well as in the broader Eurasian region. She teaches courses on sacred spaces\, visual culture\, culture contact\, and the religions and myths of the ancient world. Ranjani has a BA from Georgetown University and a PhD from the University of California\, Santa Barbara. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n+View Andrew Gallia’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nAndrew Gallia is professor of History at the University of Minnesota with a joint appointment in the department of Classical and Near Eastern Religions and Cultures. He has taught history and ancient languages at the University of Minnesota since 2004\, after receiving his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. As a historian\, Professor Gallia specializes in the cultural and political history of Rome under the Republic and early Empire (ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE) and he has published on a wide range of topics\, including religion\, gender\, ethnic identity\, cultural memory\, and the history of dress. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n+View James Laine’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nJames Laine is the Arnold H. Lowe Professor of Religious Studies at Macalester College (Saint Paul\, Minnesota)\, where he has taught since 1985. He studied History of Religions at Harvard\, where he specialized in the study of classical India\, writing a dissertation on the Mahabharata. He has done considerable field work in India\, and has written four books\, including Shivaji: Hindu King in Islamic India (Oxford\, 2003)\, a book that received considerable attention in India. His more recent book is Meta-Religion: Religion and Power in World History (University of California Press\, 2014). \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll Content Sessions will be held via Zoom and supported through a Minnesota Department of Education (MDE)-hosted Canvas learning community. Registered participants will have access to session recordings\, curated resources\, and collaborative planning tools through the Canvas course. \n\n\nHigh school World History teachers and 8th grade educators are encouraged to participate in companion Pedagogy Sessions\, which explore inquiry-based instructional approaches and classroom applications for each era. \n\nThis offering is part of Navigating the World History Eras: Content\, Pedagogy\, and Inquiry in the Classroom\, a yearlong professional learning opportunity presented by MHC and MDE that supports implementation of Minnesota’s 2021 K–12 Academic Standards in Social Studies. \n\nK-12 Educators will receive 1.5 clock hours upon completion of the event. \n\nRegistration\nContent Sessions are open to all K–12 educators interested in historical content and source-based instruction. SUMMARY:North Mankato – Social Studies Standards Workshop Day 2
DESCRIPTION:This two-day workshop series (October 20 and November 10\, 2026) is designed to equip K–12 teachers and school leaders with the knowledge and tools needed to successfully implement the new social studies standards for the 2026–27 school year. Participants will engage in a guided exploration of the revised standards\, including analysis of major content shifts\, vertical alignment across grade levels\, and implications for curriculum planning.\n‍\nThroughout the workshop\, teams will connect the updated standards to the C3 Framework\, deepening their understanding of high-quality instructional practices and identifying necessary instructional shifts to support student learning. \nK-12 educators will receive 5.5 clock hours for completion of each sessions. \nRegistration\nRegistration for this event is managed by South Central Services Cooperative.
