SUMMARY:Online - Content Session – World History Era Five A: Revolutions\, Empires\, and Nations (1750–1900)
DESCRIPTION:Explore the revolutionary transformations that reshaped the Atlantic World during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries\, examining how slavery\, resistance\, empire\, and struggles for freedom changed societies on both sides of the Atlantic. Dr. Vincent Brown will present his scholarship\, drawing on primary and secondary sources to examine how these movements reshaped political\, social\, and cultural life while leaving enduring legacies that continue to influence the world today. Dr. Katharine Gerbner\, historian and scholarly lead for this series\, will facilitate a conversation with Dr. Brown exploring key themes and perspectives from this era. This session provides historical context\, source analysis\, and thematic framing for teaching this era\, with opportunities for participant questions and discussion. \n\n\n\n\n\n+View Vincent Brown’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nVincent Brown is a historian of the African diaspora and the Atlantic world. He is the David Brion Davis Professor of History at Yale University and previously served as the Charles Warren Professor of American History at Harvard University. His research explores the histories of slavery\, resistance\, memory\, and the interconnected worlds created through the Atlantic slave trade. Brown is the author of the award-winning books The Reaper’s Garden: Death and Power in the World of Atlantic Slavery and Tacky’s Revolt: The Story of an Atlantic Slave War. He is also a filmmaker and co-founder of Timestamp Media\, using digital storytelling and visual media to explore histories that connect people and places across the globe. \n\n\n\n\n\nAll Content Sessions will be held via Zoom and supported through a Minnesota Department of Education (MDE)-hosted Canvas learning community. Registered participants will have access to session recordings\, curated resources\, and collaborative planning tools through the Canvas course. \n\n\nHigh school World History teachers and 8th grade educators are encouraged to participate in companion Pedagogy Sessions\, which explore inquiry-based instructional approaches and classroom applications for each era. \n\nThis offering is part of Navigating the World History Eras: Content\, Pedagogy\, and Inquiry in the Classroom\, a yearlong professional learning opportunity presented by MHC and MDE that supports implementation of Minnesota’s 2021 K–12 Academic Standards in Social Studies. \n\nK-12 Educators will receive 1.5 clock hours upon completion of the event. \n\nRegistration\nContent Sessions are open to all K–12 educators interested in historical content and source-based instruction. Educators are welcome to register for individual sessions that align with their interests and schedules. Join us for one or more sessions throughout the year. \n\nThis event is free\, however registration is required.
