SUMMARY:Minneapolis - Book Launch for Marie Louise Bottineau Baldwin: Political Pathfinder
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the official launch of Marie Louise Bottineau Baldwin: Political Pathfinder\, a newly released title in the acclaimed Native American Lives Series. Hear from series editor and former Minneapolis Poet Laureate Heid E. Erdrich alongside author Hema Erdrich Patel as they discuss the life\, legacy\, and political vision of Marie Louise Bottineau Baldwin. \nThis biography was written because Baldwin’s story\, while not widely known\, has much to teach us today. One of the first Native people to work in the White House in 1904\, Baldwin’s legal career in which she spent decades defending her tribe in Washington\, exemplifies how politics and activism can be bridged through advocacy\, and that education is a path to sovereignty. \nDesigned especially for educators\, parents\, and youth\, this event is an opportunity to engage directly with the creators of the series and explore the teachings of Baldwin’s story. The evening will include a reading\, conversation with the authors\, and space for questions and dialogue. \nAbout the Author\nHema Erdrich Patel is a writer\, artist\, dog lover\, and lifelong student. She comes from a beautiful blend of cultures—on her mother’s side\, mixed German and Turtle Mountain Ojibwe\, and her father’s side\, Gujarati Indian. She was raised in Belcourt\, North Dakota\, and Sisseton\, South Dakota\, and calls Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, home. She graduated from Yale University with a BA in the History of Science\, Health\, and Medicine and an Education Studies Certificate. Her most recent artistic adventure consisted of a three-month bharatanatyam dance intensive in Ahmedabad\, Gujarat\, India. She is pursuing a path toward medicine. \nAbout the Editor\nHeid E. Erdrich is the author of a dozen books in both poetry and prose. She grew up in North Dakota and is Ojibwe\, enrolled at Turtle Mountain. SUMMARY:St. Paul - We the People Summer Institute for High School Educators
DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota Humanities Center (MHC)\, in partnership with the Center for Civic Education\, is seeking a small group of Minnesota high school educators to participate in the We the People Summer Institute\, a fully funded professional learning opportunity taking place July 13–17\, 2026\, at MHC in Saint Paul. \nAs the Minnesota State Coordinator for We the People and Project Citizen\, MHC is working to expand civic education opportunities for educators and students across the state. \nThis immersive week-long institute will bring together educators from Minnesota and several other states to explore constitutional content\, inquiry-based teaching strategies\, and the nationally recognized We the People program. Participants will engage with constitutional scholars\, learn best practices for simulated congressional hearings\, and join a network of educators committed to strengthening civic learning. \nThe Summer Institute is intended for educators who are interested in exploring implementation of the We the People curriculum with students following the training. \nEducator Benefits\n\nA free classroom set of We the People textbooks\nContent and instruction from constitutional scholars and civic education experts\nOngoing mentorship and implementation support\nAccess to a national professional learning community\nOpportunities to participate in Minnesota We the People Student Showcase experiences\n52 Continuing Education Units (CEUs)\n\nEligibility\n\nHigh school government\, civics\, and history teachers\nEducators new to the We the People program or who have not participated within the past five years\n\nThe Center for Civic Education is a nonprofit\, nonpartisan organization dedicated to promoting informed and engaged citizenship through civic education. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Leading Elementary Social Studies Inquiry (LESSI) Institute
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to do more with less. The Minnesota Humanities Center\, in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Education\, presents the LESSI Institute. Through LESSI\, K–5 curriculum leaders and educators are equipped to strengthen interdisciplinary social studies and English language arts (ELA) instruction through cross-district learning and collaboration. \nThis 3-day institute guides participants through the curriculum writing process for inquiry-based instruction rooted in the 2021 social studies standards\, with intentional connections to the 2020 ELA standards. \nParticipants will: \n\nBuild their understanding of disciplinary literacy to support deeper student engagement\nStrengthen their ability to center student inquiry in meaningful\, standards-based instruction\nLeave with classroom-ready resources and routines that can be immediately implemented in their own classrooms and districts\n\nParticipants can expect to return to their contexts with practical tools\, stronger instructional design skills\, and concrete resources that support more engaging and rigorous social studies learning for students\, while also reducing planning time. \nK-12 Educators will receive 16.5 clock hours upon completion of the event.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Minnesota Humanities Center and Tony Drews of Nashke Native Games for an interactive professional development experience exploring how Ojibwe games can be used in K–12 classrooms. Through hands-on participation\, educators will experience culturally grounded games and consider how they can support engagement\, retention\, and classroom learning. \nResearch on game-based learning shows that thoughtfully designed games can increase student engagement and support deeper understanding of academic content. \nThroughout this event\, educators will explore Nashke Native Games and practical strategies for integrating Ojibwe language\, history\, and culture into instruction. Discussions will highlight how games can support engagement\, inquiry\, and connections to Indigenous learning. \nParticipants will be introduced to Minnesota Humanities Center resources\, including the Native American Lives biography series\, educator guides\, and newly developed lesson plans designed for Indigenous Peoples Day and year-round classroom use. These materials are aligned with Minnesota’s Indigenous Education for All state requirements\, which support the inclusion of Indigenous histories\, cultures\, and perspectives across K–12 curriculum. \nThe evening begins with a light dinner and conversation\, followed by gameplay\, resource sharing\, and opportunities to connect with fellow educators. Participants will also have a chance to win educational resources and games through a raffle. \nWhether you teach elementary\, middle\, or high school students\, you’ll leave with practical classroom ideas and new ways to engage students with Indigenous histories and experiences. As we recognize National Native American Heritage Month\, the Minnesota Humanities Center welcomes Tony Drews and Nashke Native Games for a lively\, intergenerational game night. \nUnlike mainstream board games that reflect dominant cultural experiences\, Nashke Native Games centers Ojibwe language\, stories\, and values\, offering a playful way to engage with culture\, strengthen family and community bonds\, and support language preservation. The evening begins with conversation over a light dinner provided by an Indigenous caterer followed by gameplay that is certain to be fun – and educational – for all. \nGuests will also have a chance to participate in a drawing for prizes\, including items from Nashke Native Games and books from Native American Lives\, the Minnesota Humanities Center’s biography series highlighting Native voices. One title\, “Charles Albert Bender: National Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher\,” tells the story of Bender and his passion for baseball – a reminder that games\, in all forms\, bring people together. \nWhether you come with family\, friends\, or on your own\, you’ll leave with new words\, fresh insights\, and a deeper appreciation for the power of play in preserving culture and fostering connection. Each household will also receive an Ojibwe game to take home and continue learning together.
