DESCRIPTION:The We Are Water MN traveling exhibit examines water issues statewide and in local communities through personal stories\, histories\, and scientific information. It strengthens Minnesotans’ relationships with water\, exposes visitors to new perspectives\, and increases participation in water stewardship activities. \nHost Partner: Anoka County Library \nWe Are Water MN will round out its 2026 tour at the Northtown Library in Blaine! Anoka County Libraries exist to serve their communities and connect them to resources and learning\, and We Are Water MN is no exception\, bringing water education and engagement to the library. Fun fact: Anoka County is the 4th largest county in the state of Minnesota\, comprised of over 360\,000 residents! Libraries are naturally places people go to learn\, and we look forward to seeing the many water related resources\, books\, book discussions\, and beyond! \nThough most of the programming at Northtown will happen indoors\, the library also features beautiful outdoor grounds\, with a pond and Shoreline Buffer Garden that are on library premises. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Metro Indian Education Fall Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Fall Metro Indian Education Gathering at the Minnesota Humanities Center. Anyone connected to American Indian Education and/or American Indian students is welcome to attend.  \nAs part of our Fall Gathering format\, the program will include updates and announcements from Annie Huberty\, Director of American Indian Education at the Minnesota Department of Education\, followed by updates from the Indian Education for All (IEFA) team. Additional program details\, including any other featured speakers\, will be shared as they are confirmed. \nAbout the Metro Indian Education Gathering\nThe Metro Indian Education Gathering is a network of urban American Indian educators who come together twice each year to build relationships\, share ideas\, discuss challenges\, and celebrate successes. Since January 2013\, these gatherings have provided opportunities for networking\, professional learning\, and connecting with colleagues who can help navigate the policies\, practices\, and opportunities that support American Indian Education programs. \nBeginning in 2026\, the gatherings follow a consistent format: the Fall Gathering features updates and presentations on topics relevant to American Indian Education\, while the Spring Gathering is centered on facilitated small-group conversations that encourage dialogue\, collaboration\, and the exchange of ideas. \nThe Metro Indian Education Gathering is coordinated by Robin Nelson\, American Indian Curriculum Specialist for ISD 622. SUMMARY:Online - Content Session – World History Era Two: Cities\, Societies\, and Empires
DESCRIPTION:Explore the emergence of cities\, societies\, and empires across Africa\, Asia\, and the Americas while examining how religious\, political\, technological\, and social developments shaped the ancient world. Dr. Katharine Gerbner\, historian and scholarly lead for this series\, will facilitate a conversation with historians Ranjani Atur\, Andrew Gallia\, and James Laine\, who will each present their scholarship\, drawing on primary and secondary sources to explore the diverse ways historians reconstruct these societies and the narratives those sources help construct. This session provides historical context\, source analysis\, and thematic framing for teaching this era\, with opportunities for participant questions and discussion. \n\n\n\n\n\n+View Ranjani Atur’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nRanjani Atur is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Religions and Cultures at the University of Minnesota\, Twin Cities. She specializes in Ancient Mediterranean religions\, religious materiality\, and comparative polytheisms. Ranjani’s research focuses on the role of material objects (statues\, vases\, etc.) and landscapes (shrines\, temples\, etc.) in shaping religious practices and beliefs in ancient Greece as well as in the broader Eurasian region. She teaches courses on sacred spaces\, visual culture\, culture contact\, and the religions and myths of the ancient world. Ranjani has a BA from Georgetown University and a PhD from the University of California\, Santa Barbara. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n+View Andrew Gallia’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nAndrew Gallia is professor of History at the University of Minnesota with a joint appointment in the department of Classical and Near Eastern Religions and Cultures. He has taught history and ancient languages at the University of Minnesota since 2004\, after receiving his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. As a historian\, Professor Gallia specializes in the cultural and political history of Rome under the Republic and early Empire (ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE) and he has published on a wide range of topics\, including religion\, gender\, ethnic identity\, cultural memory\, and the history of dress. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n+View James Laine’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nJames Laine is the Arnold H. Lowe Professor of Religious Studies at Macalester College (Saint Paul\, Minnesota)\, where he has taught since 1985. He studied History of Religions at Harvard\, where he specialized in the study of classical India\, writing a dissertation on the Mahabharata. He has done considerable field work in India\, and has written four books\, including Shivaji: Hindu King in Islamic India (Oxford\, 2003)\, a book that received considerable attention in India. His more recent book is Meta-Religion: Religion and Power in World History (University of California Press\, 2014). \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll Content Sessions will be held via Zoom and supported through a Minnesota Department of Education (MDE)-hosted Canvas learning community. Registered participants will have access to session recordings\, curated resources\, and collaborative planning tools through the Canvas course. \n\n\nHigh school World History teachers and 8th grade educators are encouraged to participate in companion Pedagogy Sessions\, which explore inquiry-based instructional approaches and classroom applications for each era. \n\nThis offering is part of Navigating the World History Eras: Content\, Pedagogy\, and Inquiry in the Classroom\, a yearlong professional learning opportunity presented by MHC and MDE that supports implementation of Minnesota’s 2021 K–12 Academic Standards in Social Studies. \n\nK-12 Educators will receive 1.5 clock hours upon completion of the event. \n\nRegistration\nContent Sessions are open to all K–12 educators interested in historical content and source-based instruction. Educators are welcome to register for individual sessions that align with their interests and schedules. Join us for one or more sessions throughout the year. \n\nThis event is free\, however registration is required. Participants will apply the series’ unit planning framework to develop compelling and supporting questions that guide student inquiry and historical thinking. \nAll Pedagogy Sessions will be held via Zoom.
