DESCRIPTION:The We Are Water MN exhibit moves to Itasca this week! Join us for this public seminar to hear from Dr. Jake Walsh\, Assistant Professor in Fisheries Wildlife and Conservation Biology at the University of Minnesota\, who will share about his research partnerships with State\, local\, and Tribal governments and local citizen groups to better understand and manage our valuable lakes. \nDr. Jake Walsh is an assistant professor in the Department of Fisheries\, Wildlife and Conservation Biology. Jake studies lake ecology and stewardship\, especially in understanding and managing aquatic biological communities and ecosystem services with state\, local\, and tribal partners. Aquatic invasive species are often a central focus of this work. Join the thousands of visitors from all over the state\, country\, and world this summer and see the We Are Water MN exhibit next to the serenity and natural beauty of Lake Itasca\, a national landmark. \nThis hosting will be within Itasca State Park\, run by the DNR\, and co-led by the U of M Itasca Biological Station\, an active field station devoted to research and teaching on how ecosystems work\, with an eye to cultivating an appreciation of their value and preservation for future generations. Come and discover the complex pathways that water follows on its journey through the water cycle. Through movement\, role-play\, and reflection\, participants will explore how water changes form and travels through the atmosphere\, land\, and living things. Everyone will make a beaded charm to represent their water droplet’s journey. \n11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.- Picnic in the Park\nBring your own picnic lunch to enjoy during the opening activities. \nNoon – 1:00 p.m. – Ice Cream Social\nEnjoy a sweet treat to help celebrate water! Friends of Itasca are sponsoring the ice cream social. Ice cream available while supply lasts. \n1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. – Water Encounters: Water Blessing\nMeet at the campfire circle outside the Lakeside Museum in the picnic grounds (in between Lake Itasca and the picnic shelter) \nAnimikii Graves will perform songs in English and Ojibwe on drum and flute\, leading us in an exploration of connections between water\, nature\, gratitude\, and tradition. Water songs will honor the important relationship between women and water in Ojibwe teachings. The program will conclude with a Miigwech (“thank you” in Ojibwemowin) Season ceremony to express gratitude for the gifts of the seasons\, as we shift from spring into summer. There will be time for audience questions and conversation about these Anishinaabe teachings. Notes: Seating is limited\, consider bringing your camp chair. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Kumbayah The Juneteenth Story\, 30th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 30th anniversary of this beloved stage performance that brings the audience on a journey through time and the imagined impact of the Emancipation Proclamation. \n\nKumbayah The Juneteenth Story\, written by Rose McGee\, is a 90-minute two-act play that addresses a factual and traumatic time in our history – when news was deliberately withheld that Black people were no longer to be kept enslaved in this country. Storytelling and music weave together mesmerizing scenes. Although tragedy is depicted\, this play within a play is tremendously uplifting. The film\, the seventh in the Juneteenth Reckoning with Slavery film series from OMG Studios\, advances the argument that these outcomes were deliberate consequences of its visual and systemic commitments to order\, hierarchy\, and control. \n\n“After our last film about Reconstruction Destructed\, I felt it was important that the next film go back to the very beginning\, the making of America. This year’s tumultuous tragicomedy\, “The Tempest\,” follows the adventures of Prospero and his family as they shipwreck their enemies and decide whether to enact revenge or seek redemption. Batten down the hatches and brace yourself for a production that twists and turns through tears and laughter\, betrayal and forgiveness\, solemnity and whimsy in one of the last plays that William Shakespeare wrote. \nPicnics\, lawn chairs\, sun umbrellas\, and blankets are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Roll up to MHC as Summer on the Lawn continues with a fantastic\, family-friendly puppet show! Open Eye Theatre’s Driveway Tour presents “Jeremy & The Giant King\,” an all-new production featuring two brothers\, a storybook realm with many amazing residents\, and oh yes\, one Giant King causing trouble! Open Eye performers will remain after the show to give curious kids and adults a behind-the-scenes peek and a closer look at the featured puppets. \nPlease note that this event will be outdoors\, weather permitting. MHC will provide light refreshments during the event. Picnics\, lawn chairs\, and blankets are welcome. The performance will be in an area with some shading\, but audience members should expect exposure to the sun. Please plan accordingly. Restrooms will be available for use at the Minnesota Humanities Event Center. These free events use laughter and comedy to celebrate Minnesota communities\, promote dialogue\, bridge divides\, and help find ways to work constructively across differences in today’s political environment. \nThis year\, Sketches of Minnesota is back and is partnering with the Emily Mine Information Group on a special event that will use laughter and comedy to dive into an important community conversation exploring the potential impacts of a manganese mine in Emily. The evening will begin with a social hour and dinner\, followed by a facilitated conversation with two experts who will share information about mine permitting\, groundwater interaction with the manganese deposit\, and potential impacts of the proposed mine. Audience members will engage with the information presented through both a Q&A and improv comedy show. \n4:30–5:30 PM: Doors open & Community Exhibits Viewing\n5:30–7:30 PM: Dinner & Program \nAbout the Speakers\nJoy Anderson\, JD-MN Center for Environmental Advocacy (MCEA) reviews mine permitting process and public input opportunities. Before joining MCEA\, Joy was a shareholder at Minneapolis law firm Gray Plant Mooty\, where she litigated cases and headed the firm’s pro bono program. Joy has provided more than 1\,200 hours of pro bono service and was named a 2018 Minnesota Attorney of the Year for her work on a pro bono case. She earned her law degree at William Mitchell College of Law and her B.A. in English and print journalism from the University of St. Thomas. \nBob Karls is a hydrogeologist with over 46 years of experience in solving environmental challenges. He has spent 40 years in consulting but has also worked for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the US Geological Survey. Bob holds a bachelor’s degree in Geology and a master’s degree in Hydrology\, from University of Minnesota and Arizona University respectively. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Summer on the Lawn: "Black Panther" Movie Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The State Fair is over\, Labor Day has come and gone\, and homework is back. Summer’s end can be tough\, but MHC’s Summer on the Lawn series closes the season on a high note with a community conversation and outdoor screening of a modern movie classic! In partnership with TriLingua Cinema and SAGE GRAY\, Summer on the Lawn presents “Black Panther” movie book club. SAGE GRAY\, a noted scholar of Afrofuturist Design and developer of the Wakanda Syllabus\, will begin the evening with a community discussion about the impact of the “Black Panther” multiverse and its importance to history and contemporary culture. GRAY will then introduce a screening of “Black Panther\,” an epic tale about the struggles and triumphs of T’Challa\, King of Wakanda and the superhero Black Panther\, as he faces the dual challenges of archrival Killmonger\, a pretender to the Wakandan throne\, and the political difficulties of securing the safety and sovereignty of his country. \nThis film is rated PG-13 and runs for 134 minutes. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to consult Common Sense Media for more information on film content. \nShowtime begins right after sunset (approximately 7:20 p.m.). Light refreshments will be provided by TriLingua Cinema and MHC. Picnics\, lawn chairs\, and blankets are welcome. Note that the screening is in an open field with minimal shade. In case of inclement weather\, the screening will be moved indoors to the Minnesota Humanities Event Center. \nAbout TriLingua Cinema\nTriLingua Cinema is a nonprofit traveling cinema with the mission of utilizing films to build community among the diverse residents of Saint Paul’s East Side. Anoka County Libraries exist to serve their communities and connect them to resources and learning\, and We Are Water MN is no exception\, bringing water education and engagement to the library. Fun fact: Anoka County is the 4th largest county in the state of Minnesota\, comprised of over 360\,000 residents!
