DESCRIPTION:In her striking new memoir\, “What Debt Demands: Family\, Betrayal\, and Precarity in a Broken System\,” Grand Central Publishing (2025). Kristin Collier recounts the moment she discovered she owed $200\,000—not from debt she incurred\, but from loans her mother had taken out in her name without her knowledge. She reflects on the emotional and financial toll of this betrayal\, and the lasting impact it has had on her life. Collier’s story also broadens into a powerful exploration of the collective burden of debt in today’s society. She will be joined in conversation by fellow writer Jennifer Eli Bowen\, author of “The Book of Kin: On Absence\, Love\, and Being There.”  \nFollowing the discussion\, audience members are invited to participate in a Q&A session and have further informal conversation with the featured speakers. Light refreshments will be provided\, copies of “What Debt Demands: Family\, Betrayal\, and Precarity in a Broken System” will be available for purchase\, and the evening will finish with a book signing. \nAbout the Author\nKristin Collier is the author of “What Debt Demands: Family\, Betrayal\, and Precarity in a Broken System\,” Grand Central Publishing (2025). She has received funding from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, a Jack Hazard fellowship\, and a Yaddo artist residency. Her writing has been published in journals such as the Los Angeles Review of Books\, Oprah Daily\, and Longreads. She is an organizer with the Debt Collective and a visiting scholar and TREC community engagement fellow at Metro State University. \nAbout the Moderator\nJennifer Eli Bowen is a writer\, arts instructor\, and editor\, whose most recent essay collection “The Book of Kin: On Absence\, Love\, and Being There\,” Milkweed Press (2025) has been shortlisted for the MN Book Awards in the Memoir/Creative Non-fiction category. Her work has received a Pushcart Prize\, The Arts and Letters Prize\, The Tim McGinnis Award\, and has appeared in The Sun\, The Iowa Review\, Orion\, and Kenyon Review\, among others. Jennifer is the Founding Artist Director of the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop. She teaches creative writing in prisons across the state of Minnesota\, and occasionally at local colleges. She also edits creative prose and conducts interviews. Jen lives in St. Paul\, a block in any direction from sidewalk poetry and snow. \nThis event is presented in partnership with Cream & Amber\, a unique book store where reading and beer come together and people can connect with each other. DESCRIPTION:Evaluate how recent U.S. history—1990s to present—shaped American debates over democracy\, rights\, and responses to global and domestic crises. Using content and sources from Dr. Walter Greason\, Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) Social Studies Specialist Brittany Rawson-Haeg and experienced classroom educators will lead this hands-on workshop supporting high school U.S. History teachers in designing inquiry-based\, standards-aligned units. \nAll Pedagogy Sessions will be conducted via Zoom. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Art + Water Workshop: Aquasonos – Community Listening with Dameun Strange
DESCRIPTION:Listening is a daily act that is both solo and collaborative: a conversation between family members over breakfast\, taking in a lesson at school\, a podcast that plays in your ears as you wait for the bus. \nWhat happens when we listen\, intentionally\, together? \nAt this evening event\, you are invited to listen together to the sounds of our watershed\, from the ancient history of Como Lake to the birds of Frogtown Farm. Sound scores by musician and composer Dameun Strange will be installed as listening environments in CRWD’s building and outdoor gardens. Tune in to three immersive works\, including a new piece composed of field recordings gathered at the previous Aquasonos workshop on April 25. Read an interview with Dameun Strange about his work\, AquaSonos: An Interview with Dameun Strange. \nAbout the Artist\nDameun Strange is an acclaimed sound artist\, multi-instrumentalist\, and award-winning composer. His body of work encompasses conceptual electronic and improvised electro-acoustic compositions that delve into the narratives and themes of the African diaspora\, frequently incorporating surrealist and Afrofuturist aesthetics. Through sound and poetry\, Strange’s artistic aim is to articulate the beauty and resilience of the Black experience\, drawing upon ancestral influences to convey stories of triumph and forge connections across the past\, present\, and future. \nStrange has composed for notable artists and choreographers including Leslie Parker\, Ananya Chatterjea\, Joanna Lees\, and Pramila Vasudevan. His significant accolades include the 2018 ACF | Create Award and a 2019 Jerome Hill Fellowship. Most recently\, he was named the inaugural composer-in-residence for the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) for their 2025-26 60th anniversary season. \nThis event is part of the We Are Water MN exhibit at Capitol Region Watershed District’s Watershed Learning Center from April 23 to June 14\, 2026. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the official launch of Marie Louise Bottineau Baldwin: Political Pathfinder\, a newly released title in the acclaimed Native American Lives Series. Hear from series editor and former Minneapolis Poet Laureate Heid E. Erdrich alongside author Hema Erdrich Patel as they discuss the life\, legacy\, and political vision of Marie Louise Bottineau Baldwin. \nThis biography was written because Baldwin’s story\, while not widely known\, has much to teach us today. One of the first Native people to work in the White House in 1904\, Baldwin’s legal career in which she spent decades defending her tribe in Washington\, exemplifies how politics and activism can be bridged through advocacy\, and that education is a path to sovereignty. \nDesigned especially for educators\, parents\, and youth\, this event is an opportunity to engage directly with the creators of the series and explore the teachings of Baldwin’s story. The evening will include a reading\, conversation with the authors\, and space for questions and dialogue. \nAbout the Author\nHema Erdrich Patel is a writer\, artist\, dog lover\, and lifelong student. She comes from a beautiful blend of cultures—on her mother’s side\, mixed German and Turtle Mountain Ojibwe\, and her father’s side\, Gujarati Indian. She was raised in Belcourt\, North Dakota\, and Sisseton\, South Dakota\, and calls Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, home. She graduated from Yale University with a BA in the History of Science\, Health\, and Medicine and an Education Studies Certificate. Her most recent artistic adventure consisted of a three-month bharatanatyam dance intensive in Ahmedabad\, Gujarat\, India. She is pursuing a path toward medicine. \nAbout the Editor\nHeid E. Erdrich is the author of a dozen books in both poetry and prose. She grew up in North Dakota and is Ojibwe\, enrolled at Turtle Mountain. Join us for this public seminar to hear from Dr. Jake Walsh\, Assistant Professor in Fisheries Wildlife and Conservation Biology at the University of Minnesota\, who will share about his research partnerships with State\, local\, and Tribal governments and local citizen groups to better understand and manage our valuable lakes. \nDr. Jake Walsh is an assistant professor in the Department of Fisheries\, Wildlife and Conservation Biology. Jake studies lake ecology and stewardship\, especially in understanding and managing aquatic biological communities and ecosystem services with state\, local\, and tribal partners. Aquatic invasive species are often a central focus of this work. Storytelling and music weave together mesmerizing scenes. Although tragedy is depicted\, this play within a play is tremendously uplifting. DESCRIPTION:Roll up to MHC as Summer on the Lawn continues with a fantastic\, family-friendly puppet show! Open Eye Theatre’s Driveway Tour presents “Jeremy & The Giant King\,” an all-new production featuring two brothers\, a storybook realm with many amazing residents\, and oh yes\, one Giant King causing trouble! Open Eye performers will remain after the show to give curious kids and adults a behind-the-scenes peek and a closer look at the featured puppets. \nPlease note that this event will be outdoors\, weather permitting. MHC will provide light refreshments during the event. Picnics\, lawn chairs\, and blankets are welcome. The performance will be in an area with some shading\, but audience members should expect exposure to the sun. Please plan accordingly. Restrooms will be available for use at the Minnesota Humanities Event Center. In case of inclement weather\, the performances will be moved indoors to the Minnesota Humanities Event Center. \nAbout Open Eye Theatre\nOpen Eye Theatre is nationally recognized for bringing a visual feast of evocative figure theater to the stage. These free events use laughter and comedy to celebrate Minnesota communities\, promote dialogue\, bridge divides\, and help find ways to work constructively across differences in today’s political environment. \nThis year\, Sketches of Minnesota is back and is partnering with the Emily Mine Information Group on a special event that will use laughter and comedy to dive into an important community conversation exploring the potential impacts of a manganese mine in Emily. The evening will begin with a social hour and dinner\, followed by a facilitated conversation with two experts who will share information about mine permitting\, groundwater interaction with the manganese deposit\, and potential impacts of the proposed mine. Audience members will engage with the information presented through both a Q&A and improv comedy show. \n4:30–5:30 PM: Doors open & Community Exhibits Viewing\n5:30–7:30 PM: Dinner & Program \nAbout the Speakers\nJoy Anderson\, JD-MN Center for Environmental Advocacy (MCEA) reviews mine permitting process and public input opportunities. Before joining MCEA\, Joy was a shareholder at Minneapolis law firm Gray Plant Mooty\, where she litigated cases and headed the firm’s pro bono program. Joy has provided more than 1\,200 hours of pro bono service and was named a 2018 Minnesota Attorney of the Year for her work on a pro bono case. She earned her law degree at William Mitchell College of Law and her B.A. in English and print journalism from the University of St. Thomas. \nBob Karls is a hydrogeologist with over 46 years of experience in solving environmental challenges. He has spent 40 years in consulting but has also worked for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the US Geological Survey. Bob holds a bachelor’s degree in Geology and a master’s degree in Hydrology\, from University of Minnesota and Arizona University respectively.
