SUMMARY:St. Cloud - Minnesota Writers Off the Page: Joyce Sutphen
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate National Poetry Month\, MHC’s Off the Page is bringing together two of Minnesota’s Poet Laureates\, Joyce Sutphen and Gwen Nell Westerman. Sutphen will be reading from her most recent collection\, “Paper Camera: Poems\, Poets\, and Poetry\,” which examines the many facets of poetry itself; reading\, memorizing\, writing\, and what poetry can do for us. She will be joined in discussion by the current Poet Laureate\, Gwen Nell Westerman. Following the discussion\, audience members are invited to participate in a Q&A session\, and have further informal conversation with the featured speakers. Light refreshments will be provided\, copies of “Paper Camera: Poems\, Poets\, and Poetry” will be available for purchase\, and the evening will finish with a book signing. \nAbout the Speakers\nJoyce Sutphen grew up on a farm near St. Joseph\, Minnesota\, and currently lives in Chaska. She has degrees from the University of Minnesota\, including a Ph.D. in Renaissance Drama. Her first book\, “Straight Out of View\,” won the Barnard New Women’s Poets Prize (Beacon Press\, 1995\, republished by Holy Cow! Press in 2001). “Coming Back to the Body” (Holy Cow! Press\, 2000) was a finalist for a Minnesota Book Award\, and “Naming the Stars” (Holy Cow! Press\, 2004) won the Minnesota Book Award in Poetry. In 2005\, Red Dragonfly Press published “Fourteen Sonnets” in a letterpress edition\, and in 2006 Sutphen co-edited the award-winning anthology “To Sing Along the Way: Minnesota Women Poets from Pre-Territorial Days to the Present” (New Rivers Press). Her poems have appeared in “Poetry\,” “American Poetry Review\,” “Atlanta Review\,” “Minnesota Monthly\,” “Water-Stone\,” and many other journals\, and she has had work featured in Ted Kooser’s “American Life in Poetry\,” and on “The Writer’s Almanac.” She has also been a guest on A Prairie Home Companion\, hosted by Garrison Keillor. In 2011 she was named the second Minnesota Poet Laureate by Governor Mark Dayton\, following the tenure of Robert Bly. Her newest collection is “Paper Camera: Poems\, Poets\, and Poetry\,” published by Nodin Press\, 2025. \nGwen Nell Westerman is a poet\, visual artist\, and scholar. Her roots are deep in the landscape of the tallgrass prairie and reveal themselves in her art and writing. She is an enrolled citizen of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate\, and her father’s family is from the Heipa District. Her mother’s family is from the Flint District of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. Neither of her parents spoke English when they were sent as small children to boarding schools in Oklahoma and South Dakota. Singing and writing for as long as she can remember\, Gwen understands from experience the important ways language and the land shape who we are. She was appointed as the Poet Laureate of Minnesota by Governor Tim Walz in 2021. \nThis event is presented in partnership with Paramount Center for the Arts\, a multidisciplinary community arts facility whose mission is to engage\, educate\, enrich\, and entertain through inspiring arts experiences. Join us for this public seminar to hear from Dr. Jake Walsh\, Assistant Professor in Fisheries Wildlife and Conservation Biology at the University of Minnesota\, who will share about his research partnerships with State\, local\, and Tribal governments and local citizen groups to better understand and manage our valuable lakes. \nDr. Jake Walsh is an assistant professor in the Department of Fisheries\, Wildlife and Conservation Biology. Jake studies lake ecology and stewardship\, especially in understanding and managing aquatic biological communities and ecosystem services with state\, local\, and tribal partners. Aquatic invasive species are often a central focus of this work. The water found at Lake Itasca begins here and flows on its winding way 2552 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. Join the thousands of visitors from all over the state\, country\, and world this summer and see the We Are Water MN exhibit next to the serenity and natural beauty of Lake Itasca\, a national landmark. \nThis hosting will be within Itasca State Park\, run by the DNR\, and co-led by the U of M Itasca Biological Station\, an active field station devoted to research and teaching on how ecosystems work\, with an eye to cultivating an appreciation of their value and preservation for future generations. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the launch of We Are Water MN at Itasca State Park with a morning and afternoon filled with free\, family-friendly activities. \n10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Water Encounters: Incredible Journey: Water’s Wild Ride Through the Water Cycle\nImagine being a water droplet as it moves through Earth’s systems! Come and discover the complex pathways that water follows on its journey through the water cycle. Through movement\, role-play\, and reflection\, participants will explore how water changes form and travels through the atmosphere\, land\, and living things. Everyone will make a beaded charm to represent their water droplet’s journey. \n11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.- Picnic in the Park\nBring your own picnic lunch to enjoy during the opening activities. \nNoon – 1:00 p.m. – Ice Cream Social\nEnjoy a sweet treat to help celebrate water! Friends of Itasca are sponsoring the ice cream social. Ice cream available while supply lasts. \n1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. – Water Encounters: Water Blessing\nMeet at the campfire circle outside the Lakeside Museum in the picnic grounds (in between Lake Itasca and the picnic shelter) \nAnimikii Graves will perform songs in English and Ojibwe on drum and flute\, leading us in an exploration of connections between water\, nature\, gratitude\, and tradition. Water songs will honor the important relationship between women and water in Ojibwe teachings. The program will conclude with a Miigwech (“thank you” in Ojibwemowin) Season ceremony to express gratitude for the gifts of the seasons\, as we shift from spring into summer. There will be time for audience questions and conversation about these Anishinaabe teachings. Notes: Seating is limited\, consider bringing your camp chair. SUMMARY:Park Rapids - The Unseen Majority in a Drop of Water
DESCRIPTION:As you visit the Headwaters of the Mississippi River\, stop by the nature cart to visit with this week’s special guest\, Dr. Beatriz Baselga-Cervera\, Assistant Professor of Ecology\, Evolution\, and Behavior at the University of Minnesota\, and explore the hidden world of freshwater microorganisms. Although they are often invisible to the naked eye\, microorganisms are essential engines of freshwater ecosystems — supporting food webs\, driving critical nutrient cycles like nitrogen\, oxygen\, and carbon\, and shaping the health of lakes\, ponds\, and rivers. \nThis event will take place at the Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center. \nHost Partner: MN DNR Itasca State Park and U of M Itasca Biological Station \nDr. Baselga-Cervera’s research merges microbial experimental evolution and bioprospecting as powerful approaches that simultaneously evaluate causal factors and integrate across ecology\, evolution\, and genetics disciplines. Research topics include: 1) bioprospection of microalgae and bacteria from extreme environments to address questions from adaptation to biotechnology\, 2) study of the evolution of complexity in the context of phenotype\, genotype\, and environment (GxPxE) interactions across the transition towards multicellularity\, and 3) integration of experimental evolution and bioprospection to address diversity and ecological questions of freshwater microbial communities (i.e.\, cyanobacteria and magnetotactic bacteria). Dr. Baselga-Cervera’s research tests the nature of microbial interactions\, the emergence of complexity\, adaptation to extreme environments\, how global change steers evolution\, and the discovery of new functions\, to mention a few. Dr. Baselga-Cervera’s research is inherently multi-disciplinarity\, often giving rise to biotechnological applications and research knowledge that can help stakeholders and policymakers. \nDr. Beatriz Baselga-Cervera has 10+ years of experience performing community-centered outreach and communication\, mainly targeting Spanish-speaking communities. GRA exists to enrich lives through the arts and become the art hub for the Morrison County area\, playing a significant role in sustaining the community’s artistic and economic vibrancy. From live theater and music performances to continuous visual art exhibits\, art classes for youth and adults\, and now the We Are Water MN exhibit\, come see how all of the wonderful things that happen when water and art meet! \nWe are especially excited that the exhibit will be in town during the annual and always highly anticipated Little Falls Arts and Crafts Fair\, September 12-13. The evening will begin with a social hour and dinner\, followed by a facilitated conversation with two experts who will share information about mine permitting\, groundwater interaction with the manganese deposit\, and potential impacts of the proposed mine. Audience members will engage with the information presented through both a Q&A and improv comedy show. \n4:30–5:30 PM: Doors open & Community Exhibits Viewing\n5:30–7:30 PM: Dinner & Program \nAbout the Speakers\nJoy Anderson\, JD-MN Center for Environmental Advocacy (MCEA) reviews mine permitting process and public input opportunities. Before joining MCEA\, Joy was a shareholder at Minneapolis law firm Gray Plant Mooty\, where she litigated cases and headed the firm’s pro bono program. Joy has provided more than 1\,200 hours of pro bono service and was named a 2018 Minnesota Attorney of the Year for her work on a pro bono case. She earned her law degree at William Mitchell College of Law and her B.A. in English and print journalism from the University of St. Thomas. \nBob Karls is a hydrogeologist with over 46 years of experience in solving environmental challenges. He has spent 40 years in consulting but has also worked for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the US Geological Survey. Bob holds a bachelor’s degree in Geology and a master’s degree in Hydrology\, from University of Minnesota and Arizona University respectively. SUMMARY:Lanesboro - Minnesota Writers Off the Page: Thomas Maltman
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging evening with Thomas Maltman and his newest novel\, Ashes to Ashes\, winner of the 2026 Minnesota Book Award for Novel/Short Story. Unfolding over the course of Lent\, and against a background of rural ministry and ancient mythology\, the novel tells the story of three teenagers in small town Minnesota\, each dealing with their own personal trials. Maltman will be joined in conversation by fellow writer and Minnesota Book Award winner Mubanga Kalimamukwento\, on what about Minnesota inspires authors\, and in particular how Vikings\, magical realism\, and mysticism make for gripping storytelling. Following the discussion\, audience members are invited to participate in a Q&A session and have further informal conversation with the featured speakers. Light refreshments will be provided\, copies of Ashes to Ashes will be available for purchase\, and the evening will finish with a book signing. \nThomas Maltman’s first novel\, The Night Birds\, won an Alex Award\, a Spur Award\, and the Friends of American Writers Literary Award. In 2009\, the American Library Association chose The Night Birds as an “Outstanding Book for the College Bound.” Little Wolves\, his second novel\, won the All Iowa Reads selection in 2014. His third novel\, The Land\, was published in 2020. In July of 2025\, Soho Press published his fourth novel\, Ashes to Ashes\, which was the winner of the 2026 MN Book Awards for Novel/Short Story. He teaches at Normandale Community College and lives in the Twin Cities area with his wife\, a Lutheran pastor\, and his three daughters. \nMubanga Kalimamukwento was born in Lusaka\, Zambia. Her creative work has appeared or is forthcoming in adda\, Aster(ix)\, Contemporary Verse 2\, Kweli\, Overland\, The Ex-Puritan\, Menelique\, on Netflix\, and elsewhere\, and her editorial work can be found or is forthcoming in Shenandoah\, the Water~Stone Review\, Doek! Literary Magazine\, and Safundi. Her book\, Obligations to the Wounded\, was the winner of the 2025 Minnesota Book Awards for Novel/Short Story\, amongst other honors. She founded Ubwali Literary Magazine and co-founded the Idembeka Creative Writing Workshop. When she’s not writing or editing\, Mubanga serves as a Mentor at the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop. She is a PhD student in the Department of Gender\, Women & Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota (Twin-Cities)\, where she is also an Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change (ICGC) Scholar. SUMMARY:Duluth - Learning from Place: African American History and the Duluth Lynchings of 1920
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Learning from Place experience exploring the history and legacy of the 1920 Duluth lynchings. \n\nThrough personal stories\, historical context\, and community perspectives\, event participants will examine and reflect upon one of Minnesota’s most significant acts of racial terror. Beginning at Zeitgeist Arts\, participants will walk to the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial\, which honors Elias Clayton\, Elmer Jackson\, and Isaac McGhie—the three Black men who were lynched in Duluth in 1920. \n\nAlong the walk\, participants will visit the site of a former city jail and learn about the events of 1920\, the community’s efforts to preserve and share this history\, and the Memorial’s ongoing role in fostering dialogue\, remembrance\, and understanding. The group will then travel by bus to Park Hill Cemetery\, where the three men were laid to rest. There\, participants will learn how community members worked to ensure they were no longer buried in unmarked graves\, culminating in the dedication of permanent headstones in 1991. \n\nUpon returning to Zeitgeist\, participants will have time to reflect on the experience\, engage in conversation with one another\, and consider how this history continues to shape our understanding of place\, memory\, and community. \n\nAs the nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the United States\, this experience invites participants to consider how a fuller understanding of our shared history – including stories that have too often been overlooked – strengthens our democracy and informs the future we build together. \n\nThis Learning from Place experience was curated by Carl Crawford\, a founding member of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial. The Memorial’s mission is to preserve the history of the 1920 Duluth lynchings\, honor the lives of Elias Clayton\, Elmer Jackson\, and Isaac McGhie\, and inspire ongoing dialogue\, education\, and action toward racial justice. \n\n\n\n\n+Meet the Facilitator and Speakers\n\n\n\n\nCarl Crawford is a founding member of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial and a longtime Duluth community leader. He served as the City of Duluth’s Human Rights Officer from 2016–2024 and currently serves as the Accessibility and Engagement Senior Coordinator for St. Louis County. Crawford has been a longtime advocate for human rights and community engagement\, helping draft Duluth’s original Human Rights Ordinance and serving as chair of the Human Rights Commission. His contributions have been recognized with the MLK Jr. Drum Major for Peace Award and the Juneteenth Community Griot Award for outstanding servant leadership. \n\n\n\nHenry Banks is a longtime Duluth community leader\, educator\, storyteller\, and advocate with more than 35 years of volunteer service dedicated to strengthening the region and supporting a more inclusive community. He is a founder of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial and played a key role in bringing forward the effort to honor the lives and legacy of Elias Clayton\, Elmer Jackson\, and Isaac McGhie. Henry has served in numerous community leadership roles\, including as vice president of the Duluth Transit Authority\, president of the Damiano Center\, and a member of the Duluth School Board. He is the creator\, senior producer\, and host of the People of Color with Henry Banks Show and has worked as a cultural consultant\, facilitator\, and anti-racism educator. Through storytelling\, advocacy\, and community engagement\, Henry continues to help preserve local history and inspire meaningful conversations about justice and belonging. \n\n\n\nDr. Lynn Goerdt is a faculty member in the Social Work Program at the University of Wisconsin–Superior\, where she teaches courses focused on social welfare policy and macro practice. Her work centers on community advocacy\, organizational change\, and strengthening communities through research\, evaluation\, and collaboration. Lynn has spent more than 17 years working as a human services consultant in the Duluth area\, partnering with local organizations on needs assessments\, program evaluation\, and community initiatives. She is also a Board Emeritus member of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial and has been deeply engaged in preserving and sharing the history and legacy of the 1920 Duluth lynchings.
