GRA exists to enrich lives through the arts and become the art hub for the Morrison County area\, playing a significant role in sustaining the community’s artistic and economic vibrancy. From live theater and music performances to continuous visual art exhibits\, art classes for youth and adults\, and now the We Are Water MN exhibit\, come see how all of the wonderful things that happen when water and art meet! \nWe are especially excited that the exhibit will be in town during the annual and always highly anticipated Little Falls Arts and Crafts Fair\, September 12-13. These free events use laughter and comedy to celebrate Minnesota communities\, promote dialogue\, bridge divides\, and help find ways to work constructively across differences in today’s political environment. \nThis year\, Sketches of Minnesota is back and is partnering with the Emily Mine Information Group on a special event that will use laughter and comedy to dive into an important community conversation exploring the potential impacts of a manganese mine in Emily. The evening will begin with a social hour and dinner\, followed by a facilitated conversation with two experts who will share information about mine permitting\, groundwater interaction with the manganese deposit\, and potential impacts of the proposed mine. Audience members will engage with the information presented through both a Q&A and improv comedy show. \n4:30–5:30 PM: Doors open & Community Exhibits Viewing\n5:30–7:30 PM: Dinner & Program \nAbout the Speakers\nJoy Anderson\, JD-MN Center for Environmental Advocacy (MCEA) reviews mine permitting process and public input opportunities. Before joining MCEA\, Joy was a shareholder at Minneapolis law firm Gray Plant Mooty\, where she litigated cases and headed the firm’s pro bono program. Joy has provided more than 1\,200 hours of pro bono service and was named a 2018 Minnesota Attorney of the Year for her work on a pro bono case. She earned her law degree at William Mitchell College of Law and her B.A. in English and print journalism from the University of St. Thomas. \nBob Karls is a hydrogeologist with over 46 years of experience in solving environmental challenges. He has spent 40 years in consulting but has also worked for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the US Geological Survey. Bob holds a bachelor’s degree in Geology and a master’s degree in Hydrology\, from University of Minnesota and Arizona University respectively. SUMMARY:Lanesboro - Minnesota Writers Off the Page: Thomas Maltman
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging evening with Thomas Maltman and his newest novel\, Ashes to Ashes\, winner of the 2026 Minnesota Book Award for Novel/Short Story. Unfolding over the course of Lent\, and against a background of rural ministry and ancient mythology\, the novel tells the story of three teenagers in small town Minnesota\, each dealing with their own personal trials. Maltman will be joined in conversation by fellow writer and Minnesota Book Award winner Mubanga Kalimamukwento\, on what about Minnesota inspires authors\, and in particular how Vikings\, magical realism\, and mysticism make for gripping storytelling. Following the discussion\, audience members are invited to participate in a Q&A session and have further informal conversation with the featured speakers. Light refreshments will be provided\, copies of Ashes to Ashes will be available for purchase\, and the evening will finish with a book signing. \nThomas Maltman’s first novel\, The Night Birds\, won an Alex Award\, a Spur Award\, and the Friends of American Writers Literary Award. In 2009\, the American Library Association chose The Night Birds as an “Outstanding Book for the College Bound.” Little Wolves\, his second novel\, won the All Iowa Reads selection in 2014. His third novel\, The Land\, was published in 2020. In July of 2025\, Soho Press published his fourth novel\, Ashes to Ashes\, which was the winner of the 2026 MN Book Awards for Novel/Short Story. He teaches at Normandale Community College and lives in the Twin Cities area with his wife\, a Lutheran pastor\, and his three daughters. \nMubanga Kalimamukwento was born in Lusaka\, Zambia. Her creative work has appeared or is forthcoming in adda\, Aster(ix)\, Contemporary Verse 2\, Kweli\, Overland\, The Ex-Puritan\, Menelique\, on Netflix\, and elsewhere\, and her editorial work can be found or is forthcoming in Shenandoah\, the Water~Stone Review\, Doek! Literary Magazine\, and Safundi. Her book\, Obligations to the Wounded\, was the winner of the 2025 Minnesota Book Awards for Novel/Short Story\, amongst other honors. She founded Ubwali Literary Magazine and co-founded the Idembeka Creative Writing Workshop. When she’s not writing or editing\, Mubanga serves as a Mentor at the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop. She is a PhD student in the Department of Gender\, Women & Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota (Twin-Cities)\, where she is also an Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change (ICGC) Scholar. Mubanga lives in Minnesota with her husband and their two children. \nThis event is presented in partnership with Garden Party Books\, an independent bookstore in Rochester\, Minnesota\, that celebrates reading\, books\, and the community. \nThis event is part of the Minnesota Writers Off the Page series\, bringing the inspirational voices of Minnesota’s authors directly to readers. \nRegistration\nThis event has been postponed.

SUMMARY:Duluth - Learning from Place: African American History and the Duluth Lynchings of 1920
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Learning from Place experience exploring the history and legacy of the 1920 Duluth lynchings. \n\nThrough personal stories\, historical context\, and community perspectives\, event participants will examine and reflect upon one of Minnesota’s most significant acts of racial terror. Beginning at Zeitgeist Arts\, participants will walk to the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial\, which honors Elias Clayton\, Elmer Jackson\, and Isaac McGhie—the three Black men who were lynched in Duluth in 1920. \n\nAlong the walk\, participants will visit the site of a former city jail and learn about the events of 1920\, the community’s efforts to preserve and share this history\, and the Memorial’s ongoing role in fostering dialogue\, remembrance\, and understanding. The group will then travel by bus to Park Hill Cemetery\, where the three men were laid to rest. There\, participants will learn how community members worked to ensure they were no longer buried in unmarked graves\, culminating in the dedication of permanent headstones in 1991. \n\nUpon returning to Zeitgeist\, participants will have time to reflect on the experience\, engage in conversation with one another\, and consider how this history continues to shape our understanding of place\, memory\, and community. \n\nAs the nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the United States\, this experience invites participants to consider how a fuller understanding of our shared history – including stories that have too often been overlooked – strengthens our democracy and informs the future we build together. \n\nThis Learning from Place experience was curated by Carl Crawford\, a founding member of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial. The Memorial’s mission is to preserve the history of the 1920 Duluth lynchings\, honor the lives of Elias Clayton\, Elmer Jackson\, and Isaac McGhie\, and inspire ongoing dialogue\, education\, and action toward racial justice. \n\n\n\n\n+Meet the Facilitator and Speakers\n\n\n\n\nCarl Crawford is a founding member of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial and a longtime Duluth community leader. He served as the City of Duluth’s Human Rights Officer from 2016–2024 and currently serves as the Accessibility and Engagement Senior Coordinator for St. Louis County. Crawford has been a longtime advocate for human rights and community engagement\, helping draft Duluth’s original Human Rights Ordinance and serving as chair of the Human Rights Commission. His contributions have been recognized with the MLK Jr. Drum Major for Peace Award and the Juneteenth Community Griot Award for outstanding servant leadership. \n\n\n\nHenry Banks is a longtime Duluth community leader\, educator\, storyteller\, and advocate with more than 35 years of volunteer service dedicated to strengthening the region and supporting a more inclusive community. He is a founder of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial and played a key role in bringing forward the effort to honor the lives and legacy of Elias Clayton\, Elmer Jackson\, and Isaac McGhie. Henry has served in numerous community leadership roles\, including as vice president of the Duluth Transit Authority\, president of the Damiano Center\, and a member of the Duluth School Board. He is the creator\, senior producer\, and host of the People of Color with Henry Banks Show and has worked as a cultural consultant\, facilitator\, and anti-racism educator. Through storytelling\, advocacy\, and community engagement\, Henry continues to help preserve local history and inspire meaningful conversations about justice and belonging. \n\n\n\nDr. Lynn Goerdt is a faculty member in the Social Work Program at the University of Wisconsin–Superior\, where she teaches courses focused on social welfare policy and macro practice. Her work centers on community advocacy\, organizational change\, and strengthening communities through research\, evaluation\, and collaboration. Lynn has spent more than 17 years working as a human services consultant in the Duluth area\, partnering with local organizations on needs assessments\, program evaluation\, and community initiatives. She is also a Board Emeritus member of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial and has been deeply engaged in preserving and sharing the history and legacy of the 1920 Duluth lynchings. DESCRIPTION:Join the Minnesota Humanities Center for a special screening of the Emmy Award-winning documentary Iron Range: Minnesota Building America at the Ely’s Historic State Theater. \nMinnesota’s Iron Range has played an extraordinary role in shaping the state and the nation. Just 10 miles wide and 100 miles long\, this region supplied the iron ore\, labor\, and human stories that helped build modern America. \nThe documentary grew out of an immersive Minnesota Humanities Center education program led in part by Iron Range historian\, scholar\, and educator Pam Brunfelt. Offered over two years\, the weeklong program brought 80 teachers from across the country to the Range for intensive study and discussion of the region’s history\, its people\, and its contributions to American history. Teachers returned to their classrooms with new knowledge and resources for incorporating the story of the Iron Range into their American history curriculum. \nThat experience helped inspire Iron Range | Minnesota Building America\, produced by the Minnesota Humanities Center in partnership with Twin Cities Public Television. SUMMARY:St. Peter - Minnesota Writers Off the Page: Thomas Maltman
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging evening with Thomas Maltman and his newest novel\, Ashes to Ashes\, winner of the 2026 Minnesota Book Award for Novel/Short Story. Unfolding over the course of Lent\, and against a background of rural ministry and ancient mythology\, the novel tells the story of three teenagers in small town Minnesota\, each dealing with their own personal trials. Maltman will be joined in conversation by fellow writer and Minnesota Book Award winner Mubanga Kalimamukwento\, on what about Minnesota inspires authors\, and in particular how Vikings\, magical realism\, and mysticism make for gripping storytelling. Following the discussion\, audience members are invited to participate in a Q&A session and have further informal conversation with the featured speakers. Light refreshments will be provided\, copies of Ashes to Ashes will be available for purchase\, and the evening will finish with a book signing. \nThomas Maltman’s first novel\, The Night Birds\, won an Alex Award\, a Spur Award\, and the Friends of American Writers Literary Award. In 2009\, the American Library Association chose The Night Birds as an “Outstanding Book for the College Bound.” Little Wolves\, his second novel\, won the All Iowa Reads selection in 2014. His third novel\, The Land\, was published in 2020. In July of 2025\, Soho Press published his fourth novel\, Ashes to Ashes\, which was the winner of the 2026 MN Book Awards for Novel/Short Story. He teaches at Normandale Community College and lives in the Twin Cities area with his wife\, a Lutheran pastor\, and his three daughters. \nMubanga Kalimamukwento was born in Lusaka\, Zambia. Her creative work has appeared or is forthcoming in adda\, Aster(ix)\, Contemporary Verse 2\, Kweli\, Overland\, The Ex-Puritan\, Menelique\, on Netflix\, and elsewhere\, and her editorial work can be found or is forthcoming in Shenandoah\, the Water~Stone Review\, Doek! Literary Magazine\, and Safundi. Her book\, Obligations to the Wounded\, was the winner of the 2025 Minnesota Book Awards for Novel/Short Story\, amongst other honors. She founded Ubwali Literary Magazine and co-founded the Idembeka Creative Writing Workshop. When she’s not writing or editing\, Mubanga serves as a Mentor at the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop. She is a PhD student in the Department of Gender\, Women & Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota (Twin-Cities)\, where she is also an Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change (ICGC) Scholar.
