SUMMARY:Red Wing - Sketches of Minnesota
DESCRIPTION:Join the Minnesota Humanities Center\, Danger Boat Productions\, and the Red Wing Community for the Sketches of Minnesota civic improv comedy tour! These free events use laughter and comedy to celebrate Minnesota communities\, promote dialogue\, bridge divides\, and help find ways to work constructively across differences in today’s political environment. \nBeginning with a catered meal\, these gatherings invite audience members to share what makes their town great\, what they think people get wrong about it\, what local divisions concern them\, and what future they imagine. An improv comedy troupe listens in on the conversations\, takes everything they heard from residents\, and brings it to life on stage through entirely unscripted improv comedy theater. \n5:00–6:00 PM: Doors open / Community hour\n6:00–7:15 PM: Dinner\n7:15–8:00 PM: Performances\n8:00–8:30 PM: Talkback \nHost Partners: Anderson Center\, City of Red Wing\, Jones Family Foundation\, Sheldon Theatre\, and Red Wing Arts \nThe work of the Minnesota Humanities Center is to create a stronger Minnesota by increasing our understanding of the beauty\, wisdom and stories of its people. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Summer on the Lawn: Children's Puppet Show!
DESCRIPTION:Roll up to MHC as Summer on the Lawn continues with a fantastic\, family-friendly puppet show! Open Eye Theatre’s Driveway Tour presents “Jeremy & The Giant King\,” an all-new production featuring two brothers\, a storybook realm with many amazing residents\, and oh yes\, one Giant King causing trouble! Open Eye performers will remain after the show to give curious kids and adults a behind-the-scenes peek and a closer look at the featured puppets. \nPlease note that this event will be outdoors\, weather permitting. MHC will provide light refreshments during the event. Picnics\, lawn chairs\, and blankets are welcome. The performance will be in an area with some shading\, but audience members should expect exposure to the sun. Please plan accordingly. Restrooms will be available for use at the Minnesota Humanities Event Center. In case of inclement weather\, the performances will be moved indoors to the Minnesota Humanities Event Center. \nAbout Open Eye Theatre\nOpen Eye Theatre is nationally recognized for bringing a visual feast of evocative figure theater to the stage. The company’s whimsical yet profound work surprises and delights whether experienced in the company’s historic jewel box theater in Minneapolis or in neighborhoods throughout the Twin Cities with the Driveway Tour. From experimental object works to puppet shows in backyards to community pageants to miniature spectacles\, Open Eye consistently creates a unique\, contagious exchange between artists and audiences. \nThis event is part of MHC’s 2026 Summer on the Lawn series. \nRegistration\nThis event is free to attend. It strengthens Minnesotans’ relationships with water\, exposes visitors to new perspectives\, and increases participation in water stewardship activities. \nHost Partner: Great River Arts \nAs the summer comes to a close and fall sets in\, join We Are Water MN at Great River Arts (GRA) in Little Fall\, where creativity meets community. GRA exists to enrich lives through the arts and become the art hub for the Morrison County area\, playing a significant role in sustaining the community’s artistic and economic vibrancy. From live theater and music performances to continuous visual art exhibits\, art classes for youth and adults\, and now the We Are Water MN exhibit\, come see how all of the wonderful things that happen when water and art meet! \nWe are especially excited that the exhibit will be in town during the annual and always highly anticipated Little Falls Arts and Crafts Fair\, September 12-13. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Voices Forward: Teen Poets Imagine the Future
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of teen poetry with Voices Forward at the Bell Museum. Voices Forward is a poetry and public humanities project for emerging poets (ages 13-19) from across Minnesota. Through mentorship and workshops with acclaimed Minnesota poets\, teen poets spent the summer crafting poetry that explores the Smithsonian Folklife Festival’s themes around the 250th anniversary of the country: Remembering Together\, Harmonizing Together\, Moving Together\, and Building Together. \nAt this showcase\, students will read their poetry that imagines futures for themselves\, their communities\, and the nation—in their own words! The evening will also include reflections from the poetry mentors: Michael Bazzett\, Lester Batiste\, Tarik Dobbs\, and Amanda Rosas. The reading and reflections will be set against the backdrop of the Imagine the Future gallery\, grounding us in a space that invites us to work together\, uphold community\, think big\, wonder\, and boldly ask — what futures can we imagine? When you join us early\, you can explore this gallery and dive into writing and reflect prompts to try some writing of your own. \nSchedule\n6:00 p.m. – Doors open.\n6:00–7:00 p.m. – Participants can explore the gallery Imagine the Future\, with writing and reflection prompts. The Bell’s Curiosity Shop will be open.\n7:00 p.m. –  Program participants will read their work.\n7:45 p.m. – Program ends. \nAbout Voices Forward\nVoices Forward is part of By the People: Conversations Beyond 250\, a series of community-driven programs created by humanities councils across the United States\, its territories\, and the District of Columbia in collaboration with local partners. Together\, these programs explore 250 years of the nation’s cultural life and imagine its shared future. Taking place at the Anderson Center’s beautiful\, historic Tower View campus\, the Children’s Book Festival is an ideal opportunity for families to connect\, learn and play. \nThroughout the afternoon\, each author or illustrator presents their work\, reads from their book\, and participates in a meet & greet and book signing booth. Taking place outdoors\, the event also features hands-on activities that engage the mind\, body\, and imagination. Anoka County Libraries exist to serve their communities and connect them to resources and learning\, and We Are Water MN is no exception\, bringing water education and engagement to the library. Fun fact: Anoka County is the 4th largest county in the state of Minnesota\, comprised of over 360\,000 residents! SUMMARY:St. Paul - Celebrating Native Language and Culture Through the Joy of Games
DESCRIPTION:Put the cell phones away and join us for an evening of fun\, food\, and cultural connection. As we recognize National Native American Heritage Month\, the Minnesota Humanities Center welcomes Tony Drews and Nashke Native Games for a lively\, intergenerational game night. \nUnlike mainstream board games that reflect dominant cultural experiences\, Nashke Native Games centers Ojibwe language\, stories\, and values\, offering a playful way to engage with culture\, strengthen family and community bonds\, and support language preservation. The evening begins with conversation over a light dinner provided by an Indigenous caterer followed by gameplay that is certain to be fun – and educational – for all. \nGuests will also have a chance to participate in a drawing for prizes\, including items from Nashke Native Games and books from Native American Lives\, the Minnesota Humanities Center’s biography series highlighting Native voices. One title\, “Charles Albert Bender: National Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher\,” tells the story of Bender and his passion for baseball – a reminder that games\, in all forms\, bring people together. \nWhether you come with family\, friends\, or on your own\, you’ll leave with new words\, fresh insights\, and a deeper appreciation for the power of play in preserving culture and fostering connection. Each household will also receive an Ojibwe game to take home and continue learning together. Everyone is welcome—families\, educators\, and community members ages 10 and up. \nFollowing the event\, Nashke Native Games will have additional games and educational resources available for purchase. \nK-12 Educators will receive 2 clock hours upon completion of the event. \nRegistration\n$15 for adults. $10 for children 10 and under.
