SUMMARY:Online Content Session - Era One: Indigenous Histories
DESCRIPTION:Explore the histories of America’s first peoples before European contact and connect them to the lived experiences of Indigenous communities today. Led by Dr. Brenda Child and moderated by Dr. Katharine Gerbner\, this session will provide deep historical context\, source analysis\, and thematic framing. \n\n\n\nView Dr. Brenda Child’s Bio\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Brenda J. Child is Northrop Professor of American Studies and former chair of the Departments of American Studies (2016-19) and the Department of American Indian Studies (2009-12).  \n\n She is the author of award-winning books of American Indian history\, including Boarding School Seasons: American Indian Families\, 1900-1940\, (1998)\, which won the North American Indian Prose Award; Holding Our World Together: Ojibwe Women and the Survival of Community\, (2012); Indian Subjects: Hemispheric Perspectives on the History of Indigenous Education (with Brian Klopotek\, 2014). Her 2014 book My Grandfather’s Knocking Sticks: Ojibwe Family Life and Labor on the Reservation won the American Indian Book Award and the Best Book in Midwestern History. Child’s book for children\, Bowwow Powwow (2018)\, won the American Indian Youth Literature Award for best picture book. \n\n Child served as a member of the board of trustees of the National Museum of the American Indian-Smithsonian and was President (2017-2018) of the Native American & Indigenous Studies Association. She was born on the Red Lake Ojibwe Reservation in northern Minnesota where she served as a member of a committee writing a new constitution for the 12\,000-member nation. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAll Content Sessions will be conducted via Zoom and a Minnesota Department of Education (MDE)-hosted Canvas learning community. Each session’s lectures and discussions will be recorded and registered participants will receive access to the Canvas course with session recordings\, curated resources\, and collaborative planning tools. \n\n\n\nHigh school U.S. History teachers and 5th and 7th grade educators are invited to participate in companion Pedagogy Sessions. \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nContent Sessions are open to all K–12 educators interested in historical content and source-based instruction. Educators are welcome to register for individual sessions that align with their interests and schedules. SUMMARY:Dakota and Ojibwe Languages Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota Indian Affairs Council’s Language Revitalization Working Group\, partnering with the Minnesota Humanities Center\, is hosting the 3rd annual Dakota & Ojibwe Languages Symposium! This two-day symposium will be held on Thursday\, Feb. 29th and Friday\, March 1st at Treasure Island Resort and Casino. The goal of the symposium is to bring people working in Dakota and Ojibwe language revitalization together. We will use this time to celebrate successes\, highlight the current state of the field\, shape future language revitalization efforts\, and elevate the visibility of Indigenous languages throughout the state of Minnesota. By bringing people together\, we hope this symposium serves as an opportunity for individuals to network with other Dakota and Ojibwe language professionals. The symposium will be held in-person and virtually for participants.  \nRegistration\nBreakfast and lunch are included for those attending in person. SUMMARY:Online - Refraction: A Gender and Sexuality Discussion Series
DESCRIPTION:Session 3: Detoxing Masculinity\nIssues related to gender and sexuality continue to be paramount in many areas\, including politics\, law\, health care\, parenting\, identity\, and social justice. In this three-part discussion series\, we will consider how gender and sexuality are refracted\, or how their meaning and social expression are changing and moving as we think through the topics of book bans\, transgender rights\, and masculinity. \nMany experts agree that the men and boys of the United States are not ok. By many measures they are falling behind and many of the impacts are less widely talked about. This session of Refraction: A Gender and Sexuality Discussion Series will seek to pull apart the term toxic masculinity and look instead at detoxing masculinity. Hamline Professor Ryan Jerome LeCount will talk about masculinity and its social expression\, particularly in the area of politics and social change in Minnesota and the United States. He will be joined by author Jeremy Norton\, who recently published Trauma Sponges\, a first-hand account of his experience working as an EMT in the emergency response sector\, and what it means for a male-dominated industry to be both full of bravura heroics and deal with intense trauma on a daily basis. \nWhat you can expect from this series: \n\nScholars\, experts\, community members\, and authors will share what the landscape looks like nationally and in Minnesota\, as well as talk about their personal experiences and perspectives.		\nEach session will have a resource list of articles\, books\, and organizations to help you gain a deeper understanding of the issues at hand.\nEngage in small and large group discussions as well as exploring ways to effect change and take action.\n\nRegistration\nRegistration is required. DESCRIPTION:Session 2: Transgender Justice\nIssues related to gender and sexuality continue to be paramount in many areas\, including politics\, law\, health care\, parenting\, identity\, and social justice. In this three-part discussion series\, we will consider how gender and sexuality are refracted\, or how their meaning and social expression are changing and moving as we think through the topics of book bans\, transgender rights\, and masculinity. \nIn this session of Refraction: A Gender and Sexuality Discussion Series\, our speakers will help to set the stage on the current landscape of transgender rights and issues nationally\, and what is happening specifically within Minnesota. Brittany Stewart from Gender Justice\, a Minnesota based organization advancing gender equity through the law\, will be joined by Máel Embser-Herbert\, professor emeritus\, U.S. Army Veteran and an editor of With Honor and Integrity: Transgender Troops in Their Own Words\, which shares personal stories from transgender people fighting for their right to serve in the U.S. military. \nWhat you can expect from this series: \n\nScholars\, experts\, community members\, and authors will share what the landscape looks like nationally and in Minnesota\, as well as talk about their personal experiences and perspectives.		\nEach session will have a resource list of articles\, books\, and organizations to help you gain a deeper understanding of the issues at hand.\nEngage in small and large group discussions as well as exploring ways to effect change and take action.\n\nRegistration\nRegistration is required. DESCRIPTION:Session 1: Book Bans and the Freedom to Read\nIssues related to gender and sexuality continue to be paramount in many areas\, including politics\, law\, health care\, parenting\, identity\, and social justice. In this three-part discussion series\, we will consider how gender and sexuality are refracted\, or how their meaning and social expression are changing and moving as we think through the topics of book bans\, transgender rights\, and masculinity. \nBooks continue to be banned or challenged across the nation\, and Minnesota is not exempt in that respect. Book bans have risen by a third over the past year in public schools\, and many of these bans are targeting LGBTQ+ characters\, themes\, and intersectional identities. This session of Refraction: A Gender and Sexuality Discussion Series will examine the controversy over sexuality and book bans and provide an opportunity to hear directly from authors whose work has been challenged. Quatrefoil Library\, a library and queer gathering space in the Twin Cities\, will be in conversation with J.J. SUMMARY:Onamia and Online – Dakota and Ojibwe Languages Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota Indian Affairs Council’s Language Revitalization Working Group\, partnering with the Minnesota Humanities Center\, is hosting a two-day Dakota & Ojibwe Languages Symposium! The goal of the symposium is to bring people working in Dakota & Ojibwe language revitalization together. We want to use this time to celebrate successes of what some groups have done in the past\, highlight what is currently going on in the field\, and help shape future language revitalization efforts. We also want to elevate the visibility of Indigenous languages throughout the state of Minnesota. By bringing people together\, we hope this symposium serves as an opportunity for individuals to network with other Dakota & Ojibwe language professionals. The event will be in-person and broadcasted virtually! \nBreakfast and lunch are included for those attending in person. Participants are responsible for booking overnight accommodations if needed (rooms are available at Grand Casino Mille Lacs). DESCRIPTION:Teaching Bdote: Tools for Teaching American Indian Content is designed for educators who have attended\, or are planning to attend\, Learning from Place: Bdote. This workshop is especially useful for developing unique classroom content to align with Minnesota State Social Studies Standards. \nOffered in collaboration with Saint Paul Public Schools\, this workshop will address the concerns and anxieties that non-indigenous educators may have around teaching Dakota content. A panel of teachers will share their experiences and learnings of leading their own Bdote tours with students. DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances the Truth\, Justice\, and Equity conference will be held virtually. We apologize for the inconvenience\, but we hope that you will be able to join us virtually for these important conversations. \nGenerations of scholars have argued that America will never be whole until reparations are provided for the moral debt created by slavery\, Jim Crow laws\, and the vestiges of the caste system it created. The international cry for justice after the murder of Mr. George Floyd and the stark racial disparities lead bare by the pandemic have renewed the sense of urgency around reparations and truth and reconciliation commissions.  \nThe Center for the Study of Black Life and Law at Mitchell Hamline School of Law\, the Minnesota Humanities Center and the Minnesota Justice and Equity Partnership invite you to join us for a day filled with song\, poetry\, and conversation about how we move toward justice with: \n\nInternational renowned scholars and lawyers involved in securing reparations and creating Truth and Reconciliation commissions outside of the United States\,\nCommunity advocates pursuing reparations and the creation of Truth and Reconciliation commissions in Minnesota\, and\n\nScholars and lawyers sharing insights concerning federal legislation involving reparations and the formation of truth and reconciliation commissions.\n\nInvited guests include Virginie Ladisch\, Senior Expert\, Programs\, at the International Center for Transitional Justice\, Marcella Naidoo\, former Regional Director of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa and Executive Director of the Black Sash\, and Minnesota’s Attorney General Keith Ellison. This is a beginning\, not an end.
