SUMMARY:Online - Content Session – World History Era Six A: The New Global Era (1900–Present)
DESCRIPTION:Explore how global conflict\, migration\, and war reshaped societies during the twentieth century\, examining experiences across the Pacific\, Europe\, and East Asia. Dr. Katharine Gerbner\, historian and scholarly lead for this series\, will facilitate a conversation with historians Andre Deckrow\, Sheer Ganor\, and Hiromi Mizuno\, who will each present their scholarship\, drawing on primary and secondary sources to explore global migration\, the Holocaust\, World War II\, and their lasting impacts on the modern world. This session provides historical context\, source analysis\, and thematic framing for teaching this era\, with opportunities for participant questions and discussion. \n\n\n\n\n+View Andre Deckrow’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nAndre Kobayashi Deckrow is an assistant professor in the Heritage Studies and Public History program and the Department of History at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. His current book project explores the history of pre-World War II Japanese migration to São Paulo in the contexts of Japanese colonial development and Brazilian regionalism and nation-making. He is particularly interested in the ways that immigrant communities develop and adapt agricultural knowledge to new cultures and climates. In the Twin Cities\, Andre is also an active public historian. Locally\, his work explores histories of immigration\, especially within the Hmong community\, and globally\, he is interested in questions of place-making within the Japanese diaspora. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n+View Sheer Ganor’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nSheer Ganor is a historian of German-speaking Jewry and modern Germany. Her work focuses on the nexus of forced migration\, memory and cultural identities. She is currently finishing a book manuscript that traces the emergence of a transnational diasporic network of Jewish refugees who escaped Nazi Germany and its annexed territories. At the University of Minnesota\, Sheer teaches classes on the history of the Holocaust\, human rights history\, modern Germany\, comparative genocide history\, forced migration and others. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n+View Hiromi Mizuno’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nHiromi Mizuno is Associate Professor of History at the University of Minnesota. She teaches courses on Modern Japan\, Global Politics of Hunger\, Global History of WWII. She is an intellectual and cultural historian whose research interests include history of science and technology\, the Japanese empire\, Cold-War Asia\, agricultural modernization\, and environmental history. \n\n\n\n\n\nAll Content Sessions will be held via Zoom and supported through a Minnesota Department of Education (MDE)-hosted Canvas learning community. Registered participants will have access to session recordings\, curated resources\, and collaborative planning tools through the Canvas course. \n\n\nHigh school World History teachers and 8th grade educators are encouraged to participate in companion Pedagogy Sessions\, which explore inquiry-based instructional approaches and classroom applications for each era. \n\nThis offering is part of Navigating the World History Eras: Content\, Pedagogy\, and Inquiry in the Classroom\, a yearlong professional learning opportunity presented by MHC and MDE that supports implementation of Minnesota’s 2021 K–12 Academic Standards in Social Studies. \n\nK-12 Educators will receive 1.5 clock hours upon completion of the event. \n\nRegistration\nContent Sessions are open to all K–12 educators interested in historical content and source-based instruction. Educators are welcome to register for individual sessions that align with their interests and schedules. Join us for one or more sessions throughout the year. \n\nThis event is free\, however registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Building on the content and sources from this era’s Content Session\, experienced classroom educators will lead a hands-on workshop exploring inquiry-based\, standards-aligned instructional approaches and classroom applications for teaching this era. Participants will apply the series’ unit planning framework to develop compelling and supporting questions that guide student inquiry and historical thinking. \nAll Pedagogy Sessions will be held via Zoom.
