SUMMARY:Online - Pedagogy Session – World History Era Six A: The New Global Era (1900–Present)
DESCRIPTION:Building on the content and sources from this era’s Content Session\, experienced classroom educators will lead a hands-on workshop exploring inquiry-based\, standards-aligned instructional approaches and classroom applications for teaching this era. Participants will apply the series’ unit planning framework to develop compelling and supporting questions that guide student inquiry and historical thinking. \nAll Pedagogy Sessions will be held via Zoom. Educators who participate in all Pedagogy Sessions will leave the year with a complete World History course aligned to the new social studies standards. \nEducators are encouraged to participate in companion Content Sessions\, which provide the historical content and sources that inform instruction for each era. \nThis offering is part of Navigating the World History Eras: Content\, Pedagogy\, and Inquiry in the Classroom\, a yearlong professional learning opportunity presented by MHC and MDE that supports implementation of Minnesota’s 2021 K–12 Academic Standards in Social Studies. \nK-12 Educators will receive 1.5 clock hours upon completion of the event. \nRegistration\nPedagogy Sessions are designed for high school World History teachers and may also be relevant for 8th grade educators. Educators are welcome to register for individual sessions that align with their interests and schedules. Join us for one or more sessions throughout the year. \nThis event is free\, however registration is required. SUMMARY:Online - Content Session – World History Era Six B: The New Global Era (1900–Present)
DESCRIPTION:Investigate how decolonization\, political change\, and global movements reshaped societies after World War II\, with a focus on Africa\, Europe\, and the Middle East. Dr. Katharine Gerbner\, historian and scholarly lead for this series\, will facilitate a conversation with historians Jameel Haque and Jessica Pearson\, who will each present their scholarship\, drawing on primary and secondary sources to explore the historical forces that transformed nations\, challenged empires\, and continue to shape global relationships today. This session provides historical context\, source analysis\, and thematic framing for teaching this era\, with opportunities for participant questions and discussion. \n\n\n\n\n+View Jameel Haque’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nJameel Haque is a professor of History and chair of the department of History and Gender Studies (HAGS) at Minnesota State University\, Mankato. Dr. Haque specializes in world history\, sports history\, and Islamic history. His research includes scholarship on the role that the US played in the Middle East before and during World War One\, as well as\, the effect that anti-Muslim sentiment and racism has had on world history curriculum and educational materials in the US and beyond. Jameel is the author of the book Baghdad Dispatches: The City of Peace in World War One. \n\nDr. Haque has directed MSU’s Kessel Peace Institute since 2020. The Kessel Peace Institute promotes peace and social justice through organizing\, events\, and documentary films. Dr. Haque is the executive producer of a series of films honoring the legacy of the 1961 visit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s to Mankato (MLK 11:12:61). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n+View Jessica Pearson’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nJess Pearson is Associate Professor of History at Macalester College\, where they teach courses on modern European history\, gender\, race and immigration\, global health\, and decolonization. They are the author of The Colonial Politics of Global Health: France and the United Nations in Postwar Africa (Harvard\, 2018). Their current research focuses on the intertwined histories of travel and decolonization\, exploring how people moved through the decolonizing world in search of relaxation\, discovery\, and independence—both personal and political. Professor Pearson holds a BA in History and French from Kalamazoo College and a PhD in History and French Studies from New York University. \n\n\n\n\n\nAll Content Sessions will be held via Zoom and supported through a Minnesota Department of Education (MDE)-hosted Canvas learning community. Registered participants will have access to session recordings\, curated resources\, and collaborative planning tools through the Canvas course. \n\n\nHigh school World History teachers and 8th grade educators are encouraged to participate in companion Pedagogy Sessions\, which explore inquiry-based instructional approaches and classroom applications for each era. \n\nThis offering is part of Navigating the World History Eras: Content\, Pedagogy\, and Inquiry in the Classroom\, a yearlong professional learning opportunity presented by MHC and MDE that supports implementation of Minnesota’s 2021 K–12 Academic Standards in Social Studies. \n\nK-12 Educators will receive 1.5 clock hours upon completion of the event. \n\nRegistration\nContent Sessions are open to all K–12 educators interested in historical content and source-based instruction.
