DESCRIPTION:Join renowned philosopher and social critic Dr. Cornel West and social impact strategist and professional disruptor Ifeoma Ike in Minneapolis in a collaborative event with our partners Westminster Town Hall Forum and Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers. Minnesota Public Radio Host Angela Davis will serve as our moderator for the “ARC Toward Justice” event.  \nWest has written 20 books and he is best known for the classics\, Race Matters and Democracy Matters\, and his memoir\, Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud. Dr. West’s most recent book\, Black Prophetic Fire\, offers an unflinching look at nineteenth and twentieth-century African American leaders and their visionary legacies. He is the former Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy at Harvard University and Professor Emeritus at Princeton University. \nIke has co-engineered Just Leadership USA and Mass Bail Out NYC efforts as well as the formation of three congressional caucuses: Caucus on Black Men and Boys\, Caucus on Black Women and Girls\, and Caucus on Black Innovation. As a movement lawyer\, Ike has been a policy advisor regarding human rights violations in Haiti\, mistreatment of Afro-Columbians\, and non-consent medical practices in Africa. \nFollowing the thought-provoking conversation by our celebrated speakers Dr. West and Ms. Ike of telling the truth and bearing witness to love and justice\, attendees will have an opportunity to continue the conversation with fellow attendees to create the beloved community and ensure that the moral arc of the universe continues to bend toward justice.  \nLivestream\nThis event will be available via livestream on May 20 on the Westminster Town Hall Forum website and Facebook page. \nRegistration\nThis event is free and open to all. \nThere is no ticketing or registration. DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Minnesota youth are the only youth in the nation that have an official voice in legislation? Join us on May 16th to learn about the four key initiatives of the Minnesota Youth Council (MYC) and the work they have done this legislative session in pursuit of a just and equitable Minnesota. \nThe MYC envisions a state that prioritizes the agency and voice of young people from all backgrounds. The MYC is a collaborative of youth leaders that works to amplify the voice and power of their peers across the state of Minnesota. These young leaders are the go-to group in Minnesota for elevating and championing youth voice in decision-making. Members of the MYC are change agents in their communities and across the state\, leading the way with youth-centered systems change. SUMMARY:ONLINE – Minnesota Writers Series: What We Hunger For
DESCRIPTION:Join the Minnesota Humanities Center (MHC) for readings and a discussion around the book\, “What We Hunger For: Refugee and Immigrant Stories about Food and Family.” This book is the first text featured in MHC’s new Minnesota Writers Series\, which amplifies recent publications from Minnesota authors. \nThe book’s editor\, Sun Yung Shin\, and contributors V.V. (Sugi) Ganeshananthan\, May Lee-Yang\, and Ifrah Mansour will read excerpts from the book and participate in a discussion around food\, community\, and the immigrant and refugee experience in Minnesota. Panelists and audience members will also be invited to take part in an object-based storytelling circle. Please bring an object\, or have one in mind\, that helps tell the story of the role of food in your culture. It could be a kitchen tool\, spice\, photograph\, or anything else that connects to your story of food\, family\, or community. \nAlthough this event was designed with members of immigrant and refugee communities in mind\, all are welcome. This event is held in partnership with the Saint Paul Public Library’s Read Brave program.  A limited number of free books are also available. She is the editor of the new collection: What We Hunger For: Refugee and Immigrant Stories About Food and Family and the best-selling anthology A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota. She is the author of poetry collections The Wet Hex (2022)\, Unbearable Splendor (finalist for the 2017 PEN USA Literary Award for Poetry\, winner of the 2016 Minnesota Book Award for poetry); Rough\, and Savage; and Skirt Full of Black (winner of the 2007 Asian American Literary Award for poetry)\, co-editor of Outsiders Within: Writing on Transracial Adoption\, and author of bilingual illustrated book for children Cooper’s Lesson and the coauthor with John Coy\, Shannon Gibney\, and Diane Wilson of Where We Come From\, an illustrated book for children (2022). \nV.V. (Sugi) Ganeshananthan\, a fiction writer and journalist\, is the author of Love Marriage\, a novel set in Sri Lanka and its diaspora communities. The book was longlisted for the Orange Prize and named one of Washington Post Book World’s Best of 2008. She is the cohost of Literary Hub’s Fiction/Non/Fiction podcast\, which is about the intersection of literature and the news. Excerpts from her second novel\, forthcoming from Random House\, have appeared in Granta\, Ploughshares\, and Best American Nonrequired Reading. \nMay Lee-Yang is a Minnesota-based Hmong American writer\, performance artist\, and teacher. Her theater works include The Korean Drama Addict’s Guide to Losing Your Virginity\, Confessions of a Lazy Hmong Woman\, and Ten Reasons Why I’d Be a Bad Porn Star. Her artmaking has been supported by the Playwrights’ Center McKnight Fellowship\, the Jerome Foundation\, the National Performance Network\, the Bush Foundation\, the Minnesota State Arts Board\, and the Loft Literary Center. She has an MFA in creative writing from the University of Minnesota. \nIfrah Mansour is a Somali\, refugee\, Muslim\, multimedia artist and an educator based in Minnesota. Her artwork explores trauma through the eyes of children to uncover the resiliencies of blacks\, Muslims\, and refugees by interweaving poetry\, puppetry\, films\, and installations. SUMMARY:Online – Feeding Our Souls: The Essence of Black Joy
DESCRIPTION:It has been over a year since the murder of Mr. George Floyd. In response to this horrific incident\, Minnesota Humanities created what went on to become the award-winning series\, “How Can We Breathe” where community members came together after being impacted by the devastation that ripped throughout the streets\, businesses\, and homes. “Feeding Our Souls: The Essence of Black Joy” will focus on the uplifting beat that spreads across generations despite the struggles of systemic racism. What is the root of self-determination and faith that Black people proclaim? Through the art and culture of food\, music\, publishing\, family legacies\, and more\, participants will examine the actualization of “hope.” \nFeaturing chefs LaChelle Cunningham and Mateo Mackbee; Ramsey County Commissioner W. Toni Carter and St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter\, III; Anthony R. Scott and Dr. Chaunda L. Scott\, two of the editors of the book “Minnesota Blacks in the 21st Century”; and the music of Ginger Commodore. \nDue to the focus of this program\, the fee is waived for Black community members residing in Minnesota.
