SUMMARY:Prior Lake - The Making of America Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the film The Making of America from OMG Studios. This event includes the screening\, panel discussion\, and art showcase: Reconstruction 2.0: Allegories of a Better World. \nThis documentary film explores how Enlightenment-era systems of knowledge shaped what became the United States of America. Directed by Monique Linder\, and produced by OMG Studios in partnership with Minnesota Humanities Center\, the film explores how Enlightenment-era systems of knowledge—art\, science\, architecture\, and cartography—produced enduring frameworks for racial slavery\, territorial extraction\, and Indigenous dispossession in what became the United States of America. \nThe showcase features works submitted by artists nationwide\, which examine themes such as virtue and moral courage; nobility beyond class or status; truth\, justice\, and liberation; reconstruction and unlearning; memory\, history\, and inherited systems; cultural healing and collective imagination; and more. \nThis film is part of an ongoing partnership between MHC and OMG Studios and a continuation of our 2026 Juneteenth commemorative series. \nRegistration\nThis event is free\, however registration is required. \nRegistration Questions: registrations@mnhum.org \nRegister Now

His Japanese American parents had been incarcerated in internment camps during World War II\, and in response to their traumatic experience\, they abandoned their Japanese roots to try to assimilate into white\, middle-class America. When the Ordway Theater in St. Paul\, Minnesota\, staged a presentation of Miss Saigon in 1992\, Mura published “Secrets and Anger” in Mother Jones\, a scathing critique of the play’s racist undertones. In response\, Mura was ostracized from the local\, dominantly white writing community\, yet in its place he found a deeper connection with other BIPOC writers and eventually started an Asian American arts organization in the Twin Cities. Mura’s upcoming book\, Exit\, Miss Saigon\, is a clear-eyed examination of a variety of issues affecting Asian Americans: anti-Asian hate crimes during the pandemic\, affirmative action\, racial and sexual stereotypes in the media\, interracial relationships and raising mixed-race children\, the legacy of Japanese American internment\, and the shortfalls of therapy in addressing race. It will be released on October 6\, 2026. \n\n\n\n  \n\nView Danez Smith’s Bio\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDanez Smith is the author of four collections including Don’t Call Us Dead\, Homie\, and most recently Bluff\, a finalist for the 2025 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Learning from Place: Rondo Tour
DESCRIPTION:Learning from Place: Rondo Tour is a bus tour comprised of ten historic sites\, a walking tour of Rondo Plaza\, and a unique opportunity to be engaged in a service project with the Hallie Q. Brown Center. The bus and walking tour will be guided by Marvin Anderson a resident who is acknowledged as “the Godfather” of Rondo. This event begins and concludes at the historic Hallie Q. Brown Center with a presentation and tour led by Benny Roberts\, Executive Director. \nHistorically\, the Rondo Neighborhood has taken pride in its Black owned businesses\, churches\, schools\, and the significance of being of service to neighbors when in need. During the mid-1950s\, the construction of Interstate 94 began the devastation that divided the community physically and economically. This revitalization tour holds fast the passion of those who never gave up the vision of regaining the vibrancy and strength that once existed in Rondo. \nRegistration\nThis event is at capacity.
