SUMMARY:St. Paul - Art + Water Workshop: Aquasonos – Community Listening with Dameun Strange
DESCRIPTION:Listening is a daily act that is both solo and collaborative: a conversation between family members over breakfast\, taking in a lesson at school\, a podcast that plays in your ears as you wait for the bus. \nWhat happens when we listen\, intentionally\, together? \nAt this evening event\, you are invited to listen together to the sounds of our watershed\, from the ancient history of Como Lake to the birds of Frogtown Farm. Sound scores by musician and composer Dameun Strange will be installed as listening environments in CRWD’s building and outdoor gardens. Tune in to three immersive works\, including a new piece composed of field recordings gathered at the previous Aquasonos workshop on April 25. Read an interview with Dameun Strange about his work\, AquaSonos: An Interview with Dameun Strange. \nAbout the Artist\nDameun Strange is an acclaimed sound artist\, multi-instrumentalist\, and award-winning composer. His body of work encompasses conceptual electronic and improvised electro-acoustic compositions that delve into the narratives and themes of the African diaspora\, frequently incorporating surrealist and Afrofuturist aesthetics. Through sound and poetry\, Strange’s artistic aim is to articulate the beauty and resilience of the Black experience\, drawing upon ancestral influences to convey stories of triumph and forge connections across the past\, present\, and future. \nStrange has composed for notable artists and choreographers including Leslie Parker\, Ananya Chatterjea\, Joanna Lees\, and Pramila Vasudevan. His significant accolades include the 2018 ACF | Create Award and a 2019 Jerome Hill Fellowship. Most recently\, he was named the inaugural composer-in-residence for the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) for their 2025-26 60th anniversary season. \nThis event is part of the We Are Water MN exhibit at Capitol Region Watershed District’s Watershed Learning Center from April 23 to June 14\, 2026. SUMMARY:Minneapolis - The Making of America Film Premiere & Gallery Reception
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Monique Linder\, and produced by OMG Studios in partnership with MHC\, the film explores how Enlightenment-era systems of knowledge—art\, science\, architecture\, and cartography—produced enduring frameworks for racial slavery\, territorial extraction\, and Indigenous dispossession in what became the United States of America. The film\, the seventh in the Juneteenth Reckoning with Slavery film series from OMG Studios\, advances the argument that these outcomes were deliberate consequences of its visual and systemic commitments to order\, hierarchy\, and control. \n\n“After our last film about Reconstruction Destructed\, I felt it was important that the next film go back to the very beginning\, the making of America. This film really helps tie all the pieces in the Juneteenth Reckoning with Slavery film series together in a significant way. DESCRIPTION:African Light Book and Coffee Shop and author Teferi Tafa are pleased to announce the first annual Oromo Literature Festival\, a community-centered literary event dedicated to celebrating Oromo literature\, language\, storytelling\, and intellectual achievement. \nThe Oromo Literature Festival seeks to promote Oromo books and authors to the wider public\, connect writers directly with readers and community members\, create opportunities for literary dialogue and intellectual exchange\, encourage reading and creative writing among youth and adults\, celebrate excellence in Oromo literature through awards and recognition\, strengthen the Oromo literary community and support local publishers\, and to reserve and promote Oromo language\, culture\, and storytelling traditions. \nThe festival will include talks and presentations by authors\, a live original poetry competition\, recognition of the most outstanding Oromo book of 2025\, a community book fair\, and a networking opportunity for collaboration among writers\, publishers\, educators\, students\, researchers\, and cultural organizations working to advance Oromo literature. \nRegistration\nThis event is free. DESCRIPTION:The inaugural Midwest Black Book Fair\, which honors stories of the resistance and uplifting intersectional narratives of Blackness\, is a community-engaged event that honors Black stories and invites people from across the Midwest to participate. \nThis family friendly event will feature Black book vendors\, Black authors\, book signings/readings\, panel conversations\, writing and publishing workshops\, Black food vendors\, and more! Held during Black August\, the fair contributes to this month-long commemoration dedicated to honoring Black abolitionists\, freedom fighters\, and political prisoners. It strengthens Minnesotans’ relationships with water\, exposes visitors to new perspectives\, and increases participation in water stewardship activities. \nHost Partner: Anoka County Library \nWe Are Water MN will round out its 2026 tour at the Northtown Library in Blaine! Anoka County Libraries exist to serve their communities and connect them to resources and learning\, and We Are Water MN is no exception\, bringing water education and engagement to the library. Fun fact: Anoka County is the 4th largest county in the state of Minnesota\, comprised of over 360\,000 residents! Libraries are naturally places people go to learn\, and we look forward to seeing the many water related resources\, books\, book discussions\, and beyond! \nThough most of the programming at Northtown will happen indoors\, the library also features beautiful outdoor grounds\, with a pond and Shoreline Buffer Garden that are on library premises.
