DESCRIPTION:Join us for the official launch of Marie Louise Bottineau Baldwin: Political Pathfinder\, a newly released title in the acclaimed Native American Lives Series. Hear from series editor and former Minneapolis Poet Laureate Heid E. Erdrich alongside author Hema Erdrich Patel as they discuss the life\, legacy\, and political vision of Marie Louise Bottineau Baldwin. \nThis biography was written because Baldwin’s story\, while not widely known\, has much to teach us today. One of the first Native people to work in the White House in 1904\, Baldwin’s legal career in which she spent decades defending her tribe in Washington\, exemplifies how politics and activism can be bridged through advocacy\, and that education is a path to sovereignty. \nDesigned especially for educators\, parents\, and youth\, this event is an opportunity to engage directly with the creators of the series and explore the teachings of Baldwin’s story. The evening will include a reading\, conversation with the authors\, and space for questions and dialogue. \nAbout the Author\nHema Erdrich Patel is a writer\, artist\, dog lover\, and lifelong student. She comes from a beautiful blend of cultures—on her mother’s side\, mixed German and Turtle Mountain Ojibwe\, and her father’s side\, Gujarati Indian. She was raised in Belcourt\, North Dakota\, and Sisseton\, South Dakota\, and calls Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, home. She graduated from Yale University with a BA in the History of Science\, Health\, and Medicine and an Education Studies Certificate. Her most recent artistic adventure consisted of a three-month bharatanatyam dance intensive in Ahmedabad\, Gujarat\, India. She is pursuing a path toward medicine. \nAbout the Editor\nHeid E. Erdrich is the author of a dozen books in both poetry and prose. She grew up in North Dakota and is Ojibwe\, enrolled at Turtle Mountain. DESCRIPTION:The We Are Water MN exhibit moves to Itasca this week! Join us for this public seminar to hear from Dr. Jake Walsh\, Assistant Professor in Fisheries Wildlife and Conservation Biology at the University of Minnesota\, who will share about his research partnerships with State\, local\, and Tribal governments and local citizen groups to better understand and manage our valuable lakes. \nDr. Jake Walsh is an assistant professor in the Department of Fisheries\, Wildlife and Conservation Biology. Jake studies lake ecology and stewardship\, especially in understanding and managing aquatic biological communities and ecosystem services with state\, local\, and tribal partners. Aquatic invasive species are often a central focus of this work. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the launch of We Are Water MN at Itasca State Park with a morning and afternoon filled with free\, family-friendly activities. \n10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Water Encounters: Incredible Journey: Water’s Wild Ride Through the Water Cycle\nImagine being a water droplet as it moves through Earth’s systems! Come and discover the complex pathways that water follows on its journey through the water cycle. Through movement\, role-play\, and reflection\, participants will explore how water changes form and travels through the atmosphere\, land\, and living things. Everyone will make a beaded charm to represent their water droplet’s journey. \n11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.- Picnic in the Park\nBring your own picnic lunch to enjoy during the opening activities. \nNoon – 1:00 p.m. – Ice Cream Social\nEnjoy a sweet treat to help celebrate water! Friends of Itasca are sponsoring the ice cream social. Ice cream available while supply lasts. \n1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. – Water Encounters: Water Blessing\nMeet at the campfire circle outside the Lakeside Museum in the picnic grounds (in between Lake Itasca and the picnic shelter) \nAnimikii Graves will perform songs in English and Ojibwe on drum and flute\, leading us in an exploration of connections between water\, nature\, gratitude\, and tradition. Water songs will honor the important relationship between women and water in Ojibwe teachings. The program will conclude with a Miigwech (“thank you” in Ojibwemowin) Season ceremony to express gratitude for the gifts of the seasons\, as we shift from spring into summer. There will be time for audience questions and conversation about these Anishinaabe teachings. Notes: Seating is limited\, consider bringing your camp chair. DESCRIPTION:Learning from Place: Bdote is a place-based experience led by Dakota community members at sites of deep significance in the Twin Cities. Participants engage with Dakota history and contemporary perspectives through story\, observation\, and shared reflection. \nThis experience is open to the general public and is particularly beneficial for educators and others seeking to deepen their understanding of Minnesota history and Dakota perspectives. She has a BA in Dakota Art and Culture and a MAE in Teacher Leadership. She is Project Director for We Are Still Here Minnesota and serves as chairperson of the Minnesota Indian Education Association. Ramona was the recipient of the 2021 Ron McKinley Award from Minnesota Education Equity Partnership and the 2023 McKnight Culture Bearers Award. She currently serves on the Indigenous Elder Advisory Board for Carleton College. \nFern Naomi Renville is an artist\, storyteller\, enrolled citizen of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate\, and seventh-generation descendant of Chief Gabriel Renville. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 30th anniversary of this beloved stage performance that brings the audience on a journey through time and the imagined impact of the Emancipation Proclamation. \n\nKumbayah The Juneteenth Story\, written by Rose McGee\, is a 90-minute two-act play that addresses a factual and traumatic time in our history – when news was deliberately withheld that Black people were no longer to be kept enslaved in this country. Storytelling and music weave together mesmerizing scenes. Although tragedy is depicted\, this play within a play is tremendously uplifting. For this anniversary performance\, the audience will be treated to special guest appearances from cast members from previous years\, who grew up as a part of this important story. \n\nAlthough interpretation is best suited for ages 8 and up\, children of all ages are welcome to attend. \n\nFunders and Supporters

SUMMARY:Online - Remembering Together with Michael Bazzett
DESCRIPTION:In this online workshop for youth ages 13-19\, students will read a half dozen poems by Lucille Clifton\, Maggie Smith\, Tracy K. Smith\, Joy Harjo\, Walt Whitman\, Langston Hughes\, and Natalie Diaz. In keeping with the Voices Forward theme of “Remembering Together\,” each of the chosen poems reckons with how & what we remember\, collectively and individually –– keeping in mind that the word re-member is the etymological opposite of dis-member\, and thus remembering can be a move toward healing and becoming whole. \nEach of the poems uses a variety of different formal approaches & techniques\, (lineation\, extended metaphor\, erasure\, abecedarian\, etc.) stretching and bending the language while doing so. After deepening our understanding of how the poems achieve their effect through reading and discussion\, we will then emulate and play with some of these techniques\, seeing which ones might “fit” in each young writers’ toolbox to be put to future use in their own work. \nMichael Bazzett is the author of five collections of poetry\, including The Echo Chamber (Milkweed Editions\, 2021) and Cloudwatcher (Copper Canyon\, 2026) winner of the Stern Prize from The American Poetry Review. His verse translation of the creation epic of the Maya\, The Popol Vuh (Milkweed\, 2018) was named by the NY Times as one of the best poetry books of 2018. The recipient of National Endowment for the Arts fellowships in both poetry and translation\, his writing has recently appeared in Poetry Magazine\, GRANTA\, The Nation\, The Paris Review\, The London Magazine\, and The Sun. A longtime teacher at The Blake School\, he lives in Minneapolis. \nThis workshop is part of Voices Forward\, a poetry and public humanities initiative for emerging youth poets (ages 13-19) from across Minnesota. Poets will explore the Smithsonian Folklife Festival’s themes: Remembering Together\, Harmonizing Together\, Moving Together\, and Building Together. \nBy the People: Conversations Beyond 250 is a series of community-driven programs created by humanities councils in collaboration with local partners. SUMMARY:Minneapolis - Learning from Place: Somali South Minneapolis
DESCRIPTION:South Minneapolis is home to a vibrant corridor of Somali owned businesses\, cultural institutions\, and public art that reflect the community’s resilience\, cultural pride\, and contributions to Minneapolis. This Learning from Place experience begins at the Somali Museum\, where participants will learn about Somali cultural heritage and\, if scheduling allows\, experience traditional dance. The group will then take a short walk to Hoyo Sambusa to sample sambusa and watch a cooking demonstration\, where founder Mariam will share the story behind her social enterprise and the cultural significance of sambusa in Somali homes and gatherings. \nParticipants will continue along the Lake Street corridor with mural artist Guulsan\, who will guide a mural walk and share the stories and inspiration behind his artwork\, offering insight into how public art expresses community identity and shapes how stories of place are remembered and shared. Along the way\, the group will visit Zizi Boutique\, celebrating its 10-year anniversary\, to learn about Somali fashion and clothing. SUMMARY:Online - Storied Objects and Ekphrasis with Lester Batiste
DESCRIPTION:This online workshop for youth poets (ages 13-19) will introduce students to the Ekphrastic poetic idea which will help us reflect on\, harmonize\, remember\, and move through particular points of American history centering visual objects. By exploring the poetry of Nikki Finney\, Sasha Pimentel\, Kimberly Reyes\, and John Keats\, students will get a taste of different types of ekphrasis based on pictures\, paintings\, sculptures\, short films\, and other forms of visual art.  This workshop will culminate in poets creating their own ekphrastic pieces based on the Smithsonian Folklife Festival of Sacred Object Collection. Students will provide a narrative for their visual artworks in order to turn the visual into the verbal or create a poem. \nLester A. Batiste is a savage writer in living color who writes for political\, social\, economic change and Black futures. Born in Chicago\, IL\, he holds an MFA from the University of Southern Maine’s Stonecoast writing program\, and an M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania. Influenced by Gwendolyn Brooks\, Carl Sandburg\, and Toni Morrison\, Lester strives to weave traditional forms and techniques with the vibrancy of African American experience and speech. Rich details are enhanced by the musical tones from Lester’s childhood on the Southside of Chicago to his present on the Northside of Minneapolis. Lester’s work has appeared in print in The Stone House Anthology (2014)\, the Southern Griot Journal (2012)\, Tulane Review (2017)\, A Garden of Black Joy (2020)\, and digitally in the Brushfire Literary and Arts Journal (2020)\, Hidden Peak Press (2022)\, The Indianapolis Review (2023)\, and The Bitchin’ Kitsch (2023). In 2025\, he received the BIPOC Emerging Writer award from Blue Earth Review. Lester’s debut poetry collection\, Angel and Night’s Youngest\, is forthcoming with the Black Spring Press Group (UK). \nThis workshop is part of Voices Forward\, a poetry and public humanities initiative for emerging youth poets (ages 13-19) from across Minnesota. Poets will explore the Smithsonian Folklife Festival’s themes: Remembering Together\, Harmonizing Together\, Moving Together\, and Building Together. \nBy the People: Conversations Beyond 250 is a series of community-driven programs created by humanities councils in collaboration with local partners. SUMMARY:Park Rapids - The Unseen Majority in a Drop of Water
DESCRIPTION:As you visit the Headwaters of the Mississippi River\, stop by the nature cart to visit with this week’s special guest\, Dr. Beatriz Baselga-Cervera\, Assistant Professor of Ecology\, Evolution\, and Behavior at the University of Minnesota\, and explore the hidden world of freshwater microorganisms. Although they are often invisible to the naked eye\, microorganisms are essential engines of freshwater ecosystems — supporting food webs\, driving critical nutrient cycles like nitrogen\, oxygen\, and carbon\, and shaping the health of lakes\, ponds\, and rivers. \nThis event will take place at the Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center. \nHost Partner: MN DNR Itasca State Park and U of M Itasca Biological Station \nDr. Baselga-Cervera’s research merges microbial experimental evolution and bioprospecting as powerful approaches that simultaneously evaluate causal factors and integrate across ecology\, evolution\, and genetics disciplines. Research topics include: 1) bioprospection of microalgae and bacteria from extreme environments to address questions from adaptation to biotechnology\, 2) study of the evolution of complexity in the context of phenotype\, genotype\, and environment (GxPxE) interactions across the transition towards multicellularity\, and 3) integration of experimental evolution and bioprospection to address diversity and ecological questions of freshwater microbial communities (i.e.\, cyanobacteria and magnetotactic bacteria). Dr. Baselga-Cervera’s research tests the nature of microbial interactions\, the emergence of complexity\, adaptation to extreme environments\, how global change steers evolution\, and the discovery of new functions\, to mention a few. Dr. Baselga-Cervera’s research is inherently multi-disciplinarity\, often giving rise to biotechnological applications and research knowledge that can help stakeholders and policymakers. \nDr. Beatriz Baselga-Cervera has 10+ years of experience performing community-centered outreach and communication\, mainly targeting Spanish-speaking communities. SUMMARY:Online - What We Carry Forward: From Memory Collage to Tanka with Tarik Dobbs
DESCRIPTION:In this generative online workshop\, youth poets (ages 13-19) will write from memory\, Minnesota\, and the objects or images that carry personal and/or collective history. Students will begin by drafting a short memory-collage poem\, then revise part of that material into a tanka\, a short Japanese poetic form rooted in image and correspondence. Together\, we will read Matsuo Basho’s “Kasane Tanka\,” Paul Violi’s “Tanka\,” and George Abraham’s “Tanka as Firework” while exploring how short poems can move from private memory into public voice. Students will leave with two connected drafts\, a revision plan\, and possibilities for future sharing through mentorship. \nPlease bring one small object\, image\, phrase\, or remembered detail connected to home\, family\, movement\, place\, or Minnesota — examples could include a family photograph\, a favorite song\, or a newspaper clipping\, among other things! Shared prompts will be available for anyone who does not bring something. \nTarik Dobbs is a writer and artist. Dobbs runs poetry.onl and is assistant professor of English in creative writing (poetry) at Southwest Minnesota State University. Dobbs’s poems have appeared in American Poetry Review\, Poem-a-Day\, and Poetry Magazine\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Photos courtesy of the Minnesota Latino Museum. \nDiscover the stories\, history\, and vibrant culture of St. Paul’s West Side\, the heart of Minnesota’s Latino community. This immersive experience focuses on The Flats and the Latino Cultural District\, a neighborhood shaped by generations of Mexican Americans\, and now home to the future Minnesota Latino Museum. \nMinnesota is home to more than 400\,000 residents of Mexican and Latino heritage\, two-thirds of whom trace their roots to Mexico. Since 2000\, Minnesota’s Latino population has grown by 288%\, contributing to the state’s cultural\, economic\, and civic life in countless ways. During this program\, participants will learn directly from Latino community members and leaders\, exploring the past\, present\, and future of this important neighborhood. \nThis Learning from Place experience is guided by Larry Lucio Sr.\, a long-time resident of St. Paul’s West Side\, and Larry Lucio Jr.\, a descendant of the West Side Flats. Larry Sr. brings a legacy of pioneering educational leadership and systems change\, while Larry Jr. engages the next generation through music\, poetry\, and the arts. DESCRIPTION:In this online workshop for youth poets (ages 13-19)\, students will practice Freedom Dreaming. Freedom Dreaming brings us to a place where we can imagine the world we want to live in\, where our identities thrive\, where poetry can meet pain\, sacrifice\, joy and hope and always feel surrounded by courage and belonging. Where our words paint our portrait which in turn becomes a reflection of our world. \nThrough understanding and embracing Freedom Dreaming\, youth poets write into existence the worlds they wish to inhabit\, a world that believes in the fullness of story and the extravagant power of our individual and collective identities. Additionally\, we will explore poetic translanguaging as a unique and empowering technique to capture the magnitude of expression that exists in the many languages and cultures within us. \nPoets and poems we will study include: \n\nJake Skeets\, “America”\nRichard Blanco\, “One Today” (excerpts)\nJosé Olivarez “i loved the world so i married it”\nElizabeth Acevedo\, “Hair”\n\nAmanda Rosas is a mother\, veteran educator and Pushcart Prize Nominated poet. She draws spirit\, beauty\, strength and creativity from the Latina women in her family and from her husband and three young daughters. Originally from San Antonio\, TX\, Amanda writes to preserve and honor the memories and stories of her Mexican ancestors. Her poems have been published by the Latino Book Review\, CALYX\, among others\, and her personal narratives as an educator can be read online at Edsurge. DESCRIPTION:Join us for this public seminar co-presented by Zhaashiigid Nooding (Ojibwe knowledge-holder from the White Earth Nation Reservation\, Red Lake Nation citizen) and Crystal Ng (settler hydrologist\, professor at University of Minnesota). \nManoomin (in Ojibwe)\, or natural Wild Rice\, is an aquatic plant that is central to the cultural identity of Indigenous peoples throughout the Upper Great Lakes region. Tribal harvesters also hold generations of understanding about the natural and human factors that influence its well-being. DESCRIPTION:Join the Minnesota Humanities Center\, Danger Boat Productions\, and Edge Center for the Arts for a special return visit of the Sketches of Minnesota civic improv comedy tour! This free event will use laughter and comedy to celebrate Minnesota communities\, promote dialogue\, and bridge divides. This year\, we will also be celebrating the 250th anniversary of our nation and diving into what that means for the Edge of the Wilderness. \nWe’re excited to welcome back the Sketches of Minnesota to the Edge of the Wilderness and reconnect the community.
