DESCRIPTION:Minnesota Writers Off the Page and Makwa Coffee’s Native Author Book Club are joining forces for a special evening with Carson Faust\, author of “If the Dead Belong Here\,” which has just been shortlisted for the Minnesota Book Awards in the Novel/Short Story category!  For this intergenerational\, supernatural thriller\, Faust will be in discussion with author Dennis E. Staples\, and along with readings from the book\, they will discuss ghosts\, hauntings\, the craft of horror/thriller\, and how their Indigenous backgrounds inform their writing. Following the discussion\, audience members are invited to participate in a Q&A session\, and have further informal conversation with the featured speakers. Light refreshments will be available for purchase through the cafe. Copies of “If the Dead Belong Here” will be available for purchase\, and the evening will finish with a book signing. \nAbout the Speakers\nCarson Faust is two-spirit and an enrolled member of the Edisto Natchez-Kusso Tribe of South Carolina. He is the recipient of artist fellowships from the McKnight Foundation and the Jerome Foundation. His fiction has appeared in TriQuarterly\, ANMLY\, and Waxwing\, among other journals\, and has been anthologized in “Never Whistle at Night: An Indigenous Dark Fiction Anthology.” He lives in Minnesota\, where he works in philanthropy. \nDennis E. Staples is an Ojibwe writer from Bemidji\, Minnesota\, and the author of “This Town Sleeps” and “Passing Through a Prairie Country.” He holds an MFA in fiction from the Institute of American Indian Arts and is a graduate of the 2018 Clarion West Writers Workshop and a recipient of the Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship. His work has appeared in Asimov’s Science Fiction and Nightmare magazine. He is a member of the Red Lake Nation. \nThis event is presented in partnership with Makwa Coffee\, a community centered craft coffee shop in Roseville\, MN. DESCRIPTION:Conclude the formative task series with a focus on sustainability. Participants will learn how to embed formative assessment routines into their teaching practice for long-term impact. \nThe Minnesota Department of Education\, in partnership with the Minnesota Humanities Center\, will host virtual and in-person sessions to support planning for and implementation of the 2021 K-12 Academic Standards in Social Studies\, held monthly during the 2025–26 school year. These sessions are open to anyone with building or district-level responsibilities for curriculum planning and development in all social studies content areas\, including curriculum directors\, department leads\, and teachers. Pre-registration is required for in-person sessions. \nVirtual sessions will have content similar to in-person sessions\, and whenever possible will feature the same speakers.  \nIn-person sessions will be an hour longer than virtual sessions and will allow time for supported collaborative work and networking.  \nWhile districts are encouraged to have a representative at each monthly session\, either in-person or virtual\, participants do not need to commit to attending all nine sessions. DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Women’s History Month\, Off the Page is pleased to feature author Debra J. Stone and her new book\, “The House on Rondo\,” which has been shortlisted for the MN Book Awards in the category of Middle Grade Literature. Debra will be in conversation with Terresa Hardaway\, discussing the history of the Rondo neighborhood\, what it means to be a writer\, and their hopes for the future of Rondo. Stone is a 2023-2025 Jerome Hill Arts Fellow in Literature\, essay\, poet and novel author. More of her work has been published by Blue Earth Review\, Indiana Review\, Green Mountains Review\, Under the Gum Tree\, and other literary journals. In 2021 her poem\, “year-of- staying–in place\,” was nominated Best of Net and Pushcart nominated. She is a board member of the Hennepin History Museum. Debra is married and resides in Minneapolis. \nTerresa Hardaway\, Ph.D.\, is an abolitionist\, design researcher\, author\, anti-racist facilitator\, creative director\, organizer\, and educator based in Minneapolis. She is Creative Director of Blackbird Revolt— a social justice-based design studio; an Associate Professor of Graphic Design; McKnight Presidential Fellow; the Director of Design Justice at the University of Minnesota’s College of Design; and the owner of Black Garnet Books. \nThis event is presented in partnership with Black Garnet Books\, an independent bookstore in Saint Paul\, MN\, that offers a curated selection of books and art by authors and illustrators of color in an environment that encourages learning\, joyful interaction\, and communal care for everyone who visits. DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota Humanities Center (MHC) is excited to host Headscarf Story Circle – a series of offerings that recognize the strength and resiliency of women. Join us for our second of three offerings in Rochester as we gather together through the shared connection of the headscarf and its complexity. This event commemorates Women’s History Month’s theme “Sustainability” with “Sustaining Home\, Health\, and Joy.” \nGuests are encouraged to wear a headscarf or head dress that is symbolic of anything from a fashion statement\, cultural identity\, health related\, or memories\, and beliefs. \n\n\n\n\n \n\nDanielle Teal is a Senior Program Coordinator at Mayo Clinic with nearly two decades of experience supporting initiatives that strengthen organizations and the people within them. She holds a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership (MAOL) and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). Danielle is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Behavioral Health (DBH) with a management concentration\, where her work focuses on the intersection of behavioral science\, population health\, and organizational well-being. \nHer professional interests center on designing systems and experiences that help people\, organizations and communities thrive. Danielle is especially motivated by initiatives that support employee well-being\, foster joy at work\, and bring a more human-centered approach to how work gets done. \nIn December 2025\, Danielle was diagnosed with breast cancer\, an experience that profoundly shaped her perspective and deepened her commitment to resilience\, compassion\, and living with intention. Outside of her professional life\, she enjoys gardening\, spending time outdoors\, and dreaming up creative projects. One of her long-term aspirations is to travel cross-country performing intentional acts of kindness and eventually write a book about radical kindness. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n\nTawonda Burks of Rochester\, Minnesota is the current Director of Operations at RAEDI (Rochester Area Economic Development Inc.). SUMMARY:Online Content Session – Era Eight: Civil Rights Struggles
DESCRIPTION:Go beyond the 1960s to explore long civil rights movements\, from the Great Migration to Black Power\, and their relevance for students today. Led by Dr. Yohuru Williams and moderated by Dr. Katharine Gerbner\, this session will provide deep historical context\, source analysis\, and thematic framing. \n\n\nView Dr. Yohuru Williams’s Bio\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Yohuru Williams is a Distinguished University Chair\, Professor and the Founding Director of the Racial Justice Initiative at the University of St. Thomas. A noted scholar of the civil rights and black power movements\, an education activist and frequent national commentator\, he is an important voice on the topics of race and social justice.  \n\n\n\nDr. Williams holds a joint appointment in the Department of History and the School of Law. As a Distinguished University Chair\, he helps the university address equity and justice topics that are outside any one school or college and separate from the internal-facing portfolio of the Office of Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion. Dr. Williams collaborates with people across the university already engaged in community work in order to leverage the full intellectual capacity of St. Thomas to be of even greater service to the community.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll Content Sessions will be conducted via Zoom and a Minnesota Department of Education (MDE)-hosted Canvas learning community. Each session’s lectures and discussions will be recorded and registered participants will receive access to the Canvas course with session recordings\, curated resources\, and collaborative planning tools. \n\nHigh school U.S. History teachers and 5th and 7th grade educators are invited to participate in companion Pedagogy Sessions. \n\nRegistration\nContent Sessions are open to all K–12 educators interested in historical content and source-based instruction. She is an enrolled citizen of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate\, and her father’s family is from the Heipa District. Her mother’s family is from the Flint District of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. Neither of her parents spoke English when they were sent as small children to boarding schools in Oklahoma and South Dakota. Singing and writing for as long as she can remember\, Gwen understands from experience the important ways language and the land shape who we are. DESCRIPTION:Go beyond the 1960s to explore long civil rights movements\, from the Great Migration to Black Power\, and their relevance for students today. Using content and sources from Dr. Yohuru Williams\, Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) Social Studies Specialist Brittany Rawson-Haeg and experienced classroom educators will lead this hands-on workshop supporting high school U.S. History teachers in designing inquiry-based\, standards-aligned units. \nAll Pedagogy Sessions will be conducted via Zoom. SUMMARY:St. Cloud - Minnesota Writers Off the Page: Joyce Sutphen
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate National Poetry Month\, MHC’s Off the Page is bringing together two of Minnesota’s Poet Laureates\, Joyce Sutphen and Gwen Nell Westerman. Sutphen will be reading from her most recent collection\, “Paper Camera: Poems\, Poets\, and Poetry\,” which examines the many facets of poetry itself; reading\, memorizing\, writing\, and what poetry can do for us. She will be joined in discussion by the current Poet Laureate\, Gwen Nell Westerman. Following the discussion\, audience members are invited to participate in a Q&A session\, and have further informal conversation with the featured speakers. Light refreshments will be provided\, copies of “Paper Camera: Poems\, Poets\, and Poetry” will be available for purchase\, and the evening will finish with a book signing. \nAbout the Speakers\nJoyce Sutphen grew up on a farm near St. Joseph\, Minnesota\, and currently lives in Chaska. She has degrees from the University of Minnesota\, including a Ph.D. in Renaissance Drama. Her first book\, “Straight Out of View\,” won the Barnard New Women’s Poets Prize (Beacon Press\, 1995\, republished by Holy Cow! Press in 2001). “Coming Back to the Body” (Holy Cow! Press\, 2000) was a finalist for a Minnesota Book Award\, and “Naming the Stars” (Holy Cow! Press\, 2004) won the Minnesota Book Award in Poetry. In 2005\, Red Dragonfly Press published “Fourteen Sonnets” in a letterpress edition\, and in 2006 Sutphen co-edited the award-winning anthology “To Sing Along the Way: Minnesota Women Poets from Pre-Territorial Days to the Present” (New Rivers Press). Her poems have appeared in “Poetry\,” “American Poetry Review\,” “Atlanta Review\,” “Minnesota Monthly\,” “Water-Stone\,” and many other journals\, and she has had work featured in Ted Kooser’s “American Life in Poetry\,” and on “The Writer’s Almanac.” She has also been a guest on A Prairie Home Companion\, hosted by Garrison Keillor. In 2011 she was named the second Minnesota Poet Laureate by Governor Mark Dayton\, following the tenure of Robert Bly. Her newest collection is “Paper Camera: Poems\, Poets\, and Poetry\,” published by Nodin Press\, 2025. \nGwen Nell Westerman is a poet\, visual artist\, and scholar. Her roots are deep in the landscape of the tallgrass prairie and reveal themselves in her art and writing. She is an enrolled citizen of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate\, and her father’s family is from the Heipa District. Her mother’s family is from the Flint District of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. Neither of her parents spoke English when they were sent as small children to boarding schools in Oklahoma and South Dakota. Singing and writing for as long as she can remember\, Gwen understands from experience the important ways language and the land shape who we are. She was appointed as the Poet Laureate of Minnesota by Governor Tim Walz in 2021. \nThis event is presented in partnership with Paramount Center for the Arts\, a multidisciplinary community arts facility whose mission is to engage\, educate\, enrich\, and entertain through inspiring arts experiences. DESCRIPTION:Examine the final stage of the inquiry arc—taking informed action. This session will explore ways to empower students to apply their learning to real-world issues and civic engagement opportunities. \nThe Minnesota Department of Education\, in partnership with the Minnesota Humanities Center\, will host virtual and in-person sessions to support planning for and implementation of the 2021 K-12 Academic Standards in Social Studies\, held monthly during the 2025–26 school year. These sessions are open to anyone with building or district-level responsibilities for curriculum planning and development in all social studies content areas\, including curriculum directors\, department leads\, and teachers. Pre-registration is required for in-person sessions. \nVirtual sessions will have content similar to in-person sessions\, and whenever possible will feature the same speakers.  \nIn-person sessions will be an hour longer than virtual sessions and will allow time for supported collaborative work and networking.  \nWhile districts are encouraged to have a representative at each monthly session\, either in-person or virtual\, participants do not need to commit to attending all nine sessions. SUMMARY:St. Paul - We Are Water MN
DESCRIPTION:The We Are Water MN traveling exhibit examines water issues statewide and in local communities through personal stories\, histories\, and scientific information. It strengthens Minnesotans’ relationships with water\, exposes visitors to new perspectives\, and increases participation in water stewardship activities. \nHost Partner: Capitol Region Watershed District \nStop two on the We Are Water MN 2026 tour brings us to the Midway neighborhood of Saint Paul\, where the exhibit is hosted by Capitol Region Watershed District (CRWD). CRWD is a local unit of government dedicated to protecting\, managing and improving the water resources of the District\, which includes parts of Falcon Heights\, Lauderdale\, Maplewood\, Roseville and Saint Paul. All the water in this district eventually flows to the Mississippi River\, and being hosted at CRWD will offer a chance for visitors to learn more about ways their actions directly impact water in their local community. This hosting will also offer a unique opportunity to spend time in the CRWD offices\, which use green building principles\, including stormwater management and energy-saving practices\, to conserve natural resources. The grounds include a watershed learning center\, a pocket park\, and interactive features designed to draw in neighbors and visitors. \nFun fact: Watershed Districts are unique parts of government\, because they aren’t defined by political boundaries. Instead\, they follow the water! DESCRIPTION:Examine the final stage of the inquiry arc—taking informed action. This session will explore ways to empower students to apply their learning to real-world issues and civic engagement opportunities. \nThe Minnesota Department of Education\, in partnership with the Minnesota Humanities Center\, will host virtual and in-person sessions to support planning for and implementation of the 2021 K-12 Academic Standards in Social Studies\, held monthly during the 2025–26 school year. These sessions are open to anyone with building or district-level responsibilities for curriculum planning and development in all social studies content areas\, including curriculum directors\, department leads\, and teachers. Pre-registration is required for in-person sessions. \nVirtual sessions will have content similar to in-person sessions\, and whenever possible will feature the same speakers.  \nIn-person sessions will be an hour longer than virtual sessions and will allow time for supported collaborative work and networking.  \nWhile districts are encouraged to have a representative at each monthly session\, either in-person or virtual\, participants do not need to commit to attending all nine sessions. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Reading Without Words: Hidden Stories of Ethiopic Manuscripts
DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, handwritten books have been part of everyday life in Ethiopia and Eritrea—used in homes\, churches\, mosques\, and communities across the region. Created and cherished by both Orthodox Christian and Muslim communities\, these manuscripts open a window onto more than 700 years of religious practice\, daily routines\, and artistic expression. But what if you can’t read Geʿez (Classical Ethiopic) or Arabic? Can these books still tell their stories? Absolutely. \nIn this illustrated\, hands-on workshop\, Dr. Jeremy R. Brown brings the world of Ethiopic manuscripts to life\, showing how much we can learn simply by looking closely. Images\, materials\, layout\, and decorations tell stories about how these books were used\, who made them\, and why they mattered. Participants will also have the rare opportunity to encounter Ethiopic manuscripts up close from the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library’s (HMML) remarkable collection. Following the discussion and workshop\, participants are invited to enjoy refreshments. \nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Jeremy R. Brown is the cataloger of Ethiopian Manuscripts at the HMML. He holds a BA in Biblical Studies from George Fox University in Oregon\, a MA in Theological Studies from Portland Seminary in Oregon\, and a Ph.D. in Semitic Languages and Literatures from the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. Prior to joining HMML\, Brown was the Senior Researcher\, Cataloger\, & Translator for the Princeton Ethiopian\, Eritrean\, and Egyptian Miracles of Mary digital humanities project where he identified and translated miracles stories in manuscripts from Ethiopia\, Eritrea\, Egypt\, Turkey\, Iraq\, and Syria. \nThis event is presented in partnership with the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (HMML). DESCRIPTION:Learning from Place: Bdote is an immersive\, place-based learning experience that brings participants to sites of deep significance to Dakota people in the Twin Cities. Through stories shared by Dakota community members\, educators will engage with histories and perspectives that are often absent from our state’s narrative. \nSites Visited: \n\nThe Bdote at Fort Snelling State Park (ba-DOTE-tay)\nWicaḣapi (we-CHA-ha-pee; formerly Indian Mounds Regional Park)\nOȟéyawahe/Pilot Knob Preservation Site (oh-HAY-ya-wa-hee)\n\n\nCo-Leads (click to expand/collapse)\nRamona Kitto Stately is an enrolled member of the Santee Sioux Dakhóta Nation. She has a BA in Dakota Art and Culture and a MAE in Teacher Leadership. She is Project Director for We Are Still Here Minnesota and serves as chairperson of the Minnesota Indian Education Association. Ramona was the recipient of the 2021 Ron McKinley Award from Minnesota Education Equity Partnership and the 2023 McKnight Culture Bearers Award. She currently serves on the Indigenous Elder Advisory Board for Carleton College. \nFern Naomi Renville is an artist\, storyteller\, enrolled citizen of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate\, and seventh-generation descendant of Chief Gabriel Renville. Born on the Lake Traverse Reservation in South Dakota\, Fern currently lives and works in Saint Paul as an educator sharing music\, story\, and land-based learning to promote greater understanding and knowledge of Dakota people.\n\n\nFAQs (click to expand/collapse)\nWill we be outdoors for the entire experience?Yes. The experience takes place outdoors at both sites. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. \nWill the experience be canceled if it rains?No — the experience is held rain or shine. In cases of severe weather\, you will be contacted with any necessary adjustments. \nWhat happens if the confluence site is flooded? \nFlooding is a possibility\, as the park is located in a flood zone. If the Bdote is inaccessible\, you will be contacted with instructions to meet at an alternative location. In the past\, this has included the Two Rivers Overlook on Shepard Road\, which provides a scenic observation point. \nHow much walking will there be?You will walk no more than one mile over mostly flat terrain and have periods of standing. You are welcome to bring a small folding or camping chair for comfort. A small portion of the walk at Fort Snelling State Park is on an unpaved trail. \nIs the experience accessible? \nParts of the experience may be challenging for individuals with limited mobility due to walking\, standing\, uneven terrain\, and being outdoors for much of the day. Fort Snelling State Park has all-terrain track chairs that can be reserved in advance. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Learning from Place: Little Africa Plaza
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota is home to a vibrant and growing African diaspora representing many countries\, languages\, and cultural traditions. In St. Paul\, Little Africa has emerged as a cultural corridor where this diversity is expressed and rooted through entrepreneurship\, community leadership\, art\, and food. \nParticipants will gather at Little Africa Plaza and hear from community leaders and culture bearers about the vision behind the new development and the role of African entrepreneurs in shaping the corridor. The experience will include an Ethiopian coffee ceremony and a cooking demonstration featuring injera\, the traditional Ethiopian flatbread prepared by Mamas Market & Deli. Participants will then sample Afro fusion sandwiches and tour the market to learn about traditional foods and spices.
