SUMMARY:Online – Teaching Bdote Educator Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Teaching Bdote Educator Workshop is designed for educators who have attended Learning from Place: Bdote and are preparing to incorporate the experience into their classroom or lead their own classroom field trip. Whether you are looking for a refresher or preparing for your first teacher-led trip\, this workshop will provide the guidance\, resources\, and confidence you need. \nOffered in collaboration with Saint Paul Public Schools\, this interactive session supports educators in aligning Bdote field trips with the 2021 Minnesota Social Studies Standards and the inquiry-based model of learning. Facilitators will also address the common questions and anxieties that non-Indigenous educators may experience when teaching Dakota history\, grounding the work in Dakota voices and perspectives. \nFacilitators include current classroom educators who have recently led Bdote field trips and Ramona Kitto Stately (Santee Dakota). Ramona\, MHC’s primary lead for Learning from Place: Bdote\, provides cultural expertise and guidance on teaching Dakota history with care. \nParticipants will: \n\nLearn from classroom teachers who have recently led Bdote field trips.\nHear candid reflections from non-Indigenous educators about teaching Bdote.\nGain insights from Ramona Kitto Stately on centering Dakota knowledge and perspectives.\nAccess resources and lesson materials to support both classroom learning and field trip planning.\n\nIntended Audience: While all are welcome\, this workshop is especially geared toward teachers in grades 4–7. \nK-12 Educators will receive 2.5 clock hours. \nRegistration\nSPPS teachers: Complimentary registration is available through our partnership with Saint Paul Public Schools. DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota Humanities Center is pleased to participate in Rain Taxi’s 26th annual Twin Cities Book Festival\, a daylong celebration of books\, writers\, readers\, and Minnesota’s vibrant literary community. \nThe festival brings together readers\, writers\, publishers\, booksellers\, and literary organizations for author readings and conversations\, book signings\, family-friendly programming\, and a bustling book fair featuring more than 140 exhibitors. The festival takes place Saturday\, November 7\, from 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. at Union Depot in Saint Paul and is free and open to the public. \nMHC is proud to participate because literature is central to the humanities. DESCRIPTION:This two-day workshop series (October 20 and November 10\, 2026) is designed to equip K–12 teachers and school leaders with the knowledge and tools needed to successfully implement the new social studies standards for the 2026–27 school year. DESCRIPTION:Beyond Learning from Place workshops offer participants supplemental learning opportunities after attending a Learning from Place experience. This session is designed to support Bdote trip participants as well as anyone seeking guidance in developing authentic\, respectful relationships with Native Nations. \nWe are excited to partner with Native Governance Center to host this Beyond Learning from Place online workshop. \nWorkshop Overview:\nAction Planning and Engagement for Accomplices \nJoin Native Governance Center\, a Native-led nonprofit\, for a practical and interactive session on building authentic partnerships and taking actionable next steps. This workshop will equip participants with tools for creating supportive action steps using Native Governance Center’s action planning framework. Attendees will also learn how to prepare themselves and understand protocol before partnering with Native Nations. DESCRIPTION:How can we help students develop the knowledge\, skills\, and confidence to participate in civic life? \nJoin the Minnesota Humanities Center for a free\, daylong professional learning workshop exploring We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution\, the Center for Civic Education’s nationally recognized civic education program. \nDesigned for upper elementary through high school educators\, this interactive workshop offers an opportunity to experience We the People firsthand and explore how its curriculum and instructional approach can strengthen civic learning. The day will include a presentation from a humanities scholar connecting broader questions of history\, identity\, and civic life to the idea of “We the People\,” along with an introduction to inquiry-based learning and how the program supports it. \nParticipants will explore the curriculum and its connections to Minnesota social studies standards\, hear practical insights from experienced educators and program leaders\, and get a taste of one of the program’s signature elements through a fun introduction to simulated congressional hearings. \nWhether you are interested in bringing the full We the People program to your students or simply looking for new strategies and resources to enrich your teaching\, this workshop is a chance to explore what the program has to offer. Participation does not commit you or your school to implementing We the People. SUMMARY:St. Peter - Minnesota Writers Off the Page: Thomas Maltman
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging evening with Thomas Maltman and his newest novel\, Ashes to Ashes\, winner of the 2026 Minnesota Book Award for Novel/Short Story. Unfolding over the course of Lent\, and against a background of rural ministry and ancient mythology\, the novel tells the story of three teenagers in small town Minnesota\, each dealing with their own personal trials. Maltman will be joined in conversation by fellow writer and Minnesota Book Award winner Mubanga Kalimamukwento\, on what about Minnesota inspires authors\, and in particular how Vikings\, magical realism\, and mysticism make for gripping storytelling. Following the discussion\, audience members are invited to participate in a Q&A session and have further informal conversation with the featured speakers. Light refreshments will be provided\, copies of Ashes to Ashes will be available for purchase\, and the evening will finish with a book signing. \nThomas Maltman’s first novel\, The Night Birds\, won an Alex Award\, a Spur Award\, and the Friends of American Writers Literary Award. In 2009\, the American Library Association chose The Night Birds as an “Outstanding Book for the College Bound.” Little Wolves\, his second novel\, won the All Iowa Reads selection in 2014. His third novel\, The Land\, was published in 2020. In July of 2025\, Soho Press published his fourth novel\, Ashes to Ashes\, which was the winner of the 2026 MN Book Awards for Novel/Short Story. He teaches at Normandale Community College and lives in the Twin Cities area with his wife\, a Lutheran pastor\, and his three daughters. \nMubanga Kalimamukwento was born in Lusaka\, Zambia. Her creative work has appeared or is forthcoming in adda\, Aster(ix)\, Contemporary Verse 2\, Kweli\, Overland\, The Ex-Puritan\, Menelique\, on Netflix\, and elsewhere\, and her editorial work can be found or is forthcoming in Shenandoah\, the Water~Stone Review\, Doek! Literary Magazine\, and Safundi. Her book\, Obligations to the Wounded\, was the winner of the 2025 Minnesota Book Awards for Novel/Short Story\, amongst other honors. She founded Ubwali Literary Magazine and co-founded the Idembeka Creative Writing Workshop. When she’s not writing or editing\, Mubanga serves as a Mentor at the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop. She is a PhD student in the Department of Gender\, Women & Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota (Twin-Cities)\, where she is also an Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change (ICGC) Scholar. DESCRIPTION:Building on the content and sources from this era’s Content Session\, experienced classroom educators will lead a hands-on workshop exploring inquiry-based\, standards-aligned instructional approaches and classroom applications for teaching this era. Participants will apply the series’ unit planning framework to develop compelling and supporting questions that guide student inquiry and historical thinking. \nAll Pedagogy Sessions will be held via Zoom. Educators who participate in all Pedagogy Sessions will leave the year with a complete World History course aligned to the new social studies standards. \nEducators are encouraged to participate in companion Content Sessions\, which provide the historical content and sources that inform instruction for each era. \nThis offering is part of Navigating the World History Eras: Content\, Pedagogy\, and Inquiry in the Classroom\, a yearlong professional learning opportunity presented by MHC and MDE that supports implementation of Minnesota’s 2021 K–12 Academic Standards in Social Studies. \nK-12 Educators will receive 1.5 clock hours upon completion of the event. \nRegistration\nPedagogy Sessions are designed for high school World History teachers and may also be relevant for 8th grade educators.
