SUMMARY:Rochester - Sketches of Minnesota
DESCRIPTION:Join the Minnesota Humanities Center\, Danger Boat Productions\, and Rochester community for a special return visit of the Sketches of Minnesota civic improv comedy tour! These free events use laughter and comedy to celebrate Minnesota communities\, promote dialogue\, bridge divides\, and help find ways to work constructively across differences in today’s political environment. \nThis time\, we invite the Rochester community to take a deep dive into the topic of downtown Rochester – what it means and how it affects residents in the surrounding community and what challenges and opportunities lie ahead for its future. We will begin with a catered dinner conversation discussing downtown Rochester. An improv comedy troupe will listen in on the conversations\, take everything they heard from residents\, and bring it to life on stage through entirely unscripted improv comedy theater. Following the performance\, Rochester civic and community leaders will unpack the evening’s themes in a fireside chat. \n5:00–6:00 PM: Doors open / Community hour\n6:00–7:15 PM: Dinner\n7:15–8:00 PM: Improv show\n8:00–8:30 PM: Talkback w/ local leaders \nHost Partner: Rochester Art Center \nThe work of the Minnesota Humanities Center is to create a stronger Minnesota by increasing our understanding of the beauty\, wisdom and stories of its people. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Learning from Place: Little Mekong Cultural District
DESCRIPTION:St. Paul’s Little Mekong Cultural District invites participants into a vibrant Southeast Asian cultural corridor shaped by migration\, resilience\, and entrepreneurship along University Avenue. The experience begins at XIA Books & Cafe\, where community leader Va-Megn Thoj welcomes participants and grounds the journey in the story of the Mekong River and its connection to identity\, history\, and place. From there\, participants walk through a neighborhood alive with murals\, shops\, and community stories. Along the way\, elders from Vietnamese Social Services share reflections of pride\, gratitude\, and courage\, including stories from those who came to the United States as refugees of war. At the Hmong Cultural Center\, participants deepen their understanding of the importance\, and the difficulty\, of preserving oral-based histories. If scheduling permits\, they may also have the opportunity to hear the sound of the qeej\, a traditional Hmong instrument whose breath\, rhythm\, and movement carry ancestral voice and ceremony. The journey continues through local restaurants\, where dishes such as somlaw kao kou\, a savory Cambodian soup with green papaya\, eggplant\, and pumpkin\, evoke memories of family\, tradition\, and foodways across generations and borders. The experience closes with group reflection\, inviting participants to connect these sensory and human experiences to a deeper understanding of community\, culture\, and belonging. \nK-12 Educators will receive 3 clock hours upon completion of the event. \nThis experience is presented in collaboration with Asian Economic Development Association (AEDA)\, a non-profit organization whose mission is to create economic and cultural opportunities for Twin Cities Asian American. \nRegistration\nTo ensure that cost is not a barrier\, we have a limited number of complimentary spaces available for Minnesota residents. SUMMARY:St. Paul – Learning Through Play: An Ojibwe Games Workshop for Educators
DESCRIPTION:Join the Minnesota Humanities Center and Tony Drews of Nashke Native Games for an interactive professional development experience exploring how Ojibwe games can be used in K–12 classrooms. Through hands-on participation\, educators will experience culturally grounded games and consider how they can support engagement\, retention\, and classroom learning. \nResearch on game-based learning shows that thoughtfully designed games can increase student engagement and support deeper understanding of academic content. \nThroughout this event\, educators will explore Nashke Native Games and practical strategies for integrating Ojibwe language\, history\, and culture into instruction. Discussions will highlight how games can support engagement\, inquiry\, and connections to Indigenous learning. \nParticipants will be introduced to Minnesota Humanities Center resources\, including the Native American Lives biography series\, educator guides\, and newly developed lesson plans designed for Indigenous Peoples Day and year-round classroom use. These materials are aligned with Minnesota’s Indigenous Education for All state requirements\, which support the inclusion of Indigenous histories\, cultures\, and perspectives across K–12 curriculum. \nThe evening begins with a light dinner and conversation\, followed by gameplay\, resource sharing\, and opportunities to connect with fellow educators. Participants will also have a chance to win educational resources and games through a raffle. \nWhether you teach elementary\, middle\, or high school students\, you’ll leave with practical classroom ideas and new ways to engage students with Indigenous histories and experiences.
