SUMMARY:Online - What We Carry Forward: From Memory Collage to Tanka with Tarik Dobbs
DESCRIPTION:In this generative online workshop\, youth poets (ages 13-19) will write from memory\, Minnesota\, and the objects or images that carry personal and/or collective history. Students will begin by drafting a short memory-collage poem\, then revise part of that material into a tanka\, a short Japanese poetic form rooted in image and correspondence. Together\, we will read Matsuo Basho’s “Kasane Tanka\,” Paul Violi’s “Tanka\,” and George Abraham’s “Tanka as Firework” while exploring how short poems can move from private memory into public voice. Students will leave with two connected drafts\, a revision plan\, and possibilities for future sharing through mentorship. \nPlease bring one small object\, image\, phrase\, or remembered detail connected to home\, family\, movement\, place\, or Minnesota — examples could include a family photograph\, a favorite song\, or a newspaper clipping\, among other things! Shared prompts will be available for anyone who does not bring something. \nTarik Dobbs is a writer and artist. Dobbs runs poetry.onl and is assistant professor of English in creative writing (poetry) at Southwest Minnesota State University. Dobbs’s poems have appeared in American Poetry Review\, Poem-a-Day\, and Poetry Magazine\, among others. Dobbs is the author of Nazar Boy (2024)\, winner of the 2026 GLCA New Writers Award in Poetry\, and Dearbornistan (forthcoming)\, both from Haymarket Books. \nThis workshop is part of Voices Forward\, a poetry and public humanities initiative for emerging youth poets (ages 13-19) from across Minnesota. Poets will explore the Smithsonian Folklife Festival’s themes: Remembering Together\, Harmonizing Together\, Moving Together\, and Building Together. \nBy the People: Conversations Beyond 250 is a series of community-driven programs created by humanities councils in collaboration with local partners. SUMMARY:Minneapolis - Learning from Place: Somali South Minneapolis
DESCRIPTION:South Minneapolis is home to a vibrant corridor of Somali owned businesses\, cultural institutions\, and public art that reflect the community’s resilience\, cultural pride\, and contributions to Minneapolis. This Learning from Place experience begins at the Somali Museum\, where participants will learn about Somali cultural heritage and\, if scheduling allows\, experience traditional dance. The group will then take a short walk to Hoyo Sambusa to sample sambusa and watch a cooking demonstration\, where founder Mariam will share the story behind her social enterprise and the cultural significance of sambusa in Somali homes and gatherings. \nParticipants will continue along the Lake Street corridor with mural artist Guulsan\, who will guide a mural walk and share the stories and inspiration behind his artwork\, offering insight into how public art expresses community identity and shapes how stories of place are remembered and shared. Along the way\, the group will visit Zizi Boutique\, celebrating its 10-year anniversary\, to learn about Somali fashion and clothing. DESCRIPTION:Photos courtesy of the Minnesota Latino Museum. \nDiscover the stories\, history\, and vibrant culture of St. Paul’s West Side\, the heart of Minnesota’s Latino community. This immersive experience focuses on The Flats and the Latino Cultural District\, a neighborhood shaped by generations of Mexican Americans\, and now home to the future Minnesota Latino Museum. \nMinnesota is home to more than 400\,000 residents of Mexican and Latino heritage\, two-thirds of whom trace their roots to Mexico. Since 2000\, Minnesota’s Latino population has grown by 288%\, contributing to the state’s cultural\, economic\, and civic life in countless ways. During this program\, participants will learn directly from Latino community members and leaders\, exploring the past\, present\, and future of this important neighborhood. \nThis Learning from Place experience is guided by Larry Lucio Sr.\, a long-time resident of St. Paul’s West Side\, and Larry Lucio Jr.\, a descendant of the West Side Flats. Larry Sr. brings a legacy of pioneering educational leadership and systems change\, while Larry Jr. engages the next generation through music\, poetry\, and the arts. DESCRIPTION:In this online workshop for youth poets (ages 13-19)\, students will practice Freedom Dreaming. Freedom Dreaming brings us to a place where we can imagine the world we want to live in\, where our identities thrive\, where poetry can meet pain\, sacrifice\, joy and hope and always feel surrounded by courage and belonging. Where our words paint our portrait which in turn becomes a reflection of our world. \nThrough understanding and embracing Freedom Dreaming\, youth poets write into existence the worlds they wish to inhabit\, a world that believes in the fullness of story and the extravagant power of our individual and collective identities. Additionally\, we will explore poetic translanguaging as a unique and empowering technique to capture the magnitude of expression that exists in the many languages and cultures within us. \nPoets and poems we will study include: \n\nJake Skeets\, “America”\nRichard Blanco\, “One Today” (excerpts)\nJosé Olivarez “i loved the world so i married it”\nElizabeth Acevedo\, “Hair”\n\nAmanda Rosas is a mother\, veteran educator and Pushcart Prize Nominated poet. She draws spirit\, beauty\, strength and creativity from the Latina women in her family and from her husband and three young daughters. Originally from San Antonio\, TX\, Amanda writes to preserve and honor the memories and stories of her Mexican ancestors. Her poems have been published by the Latino Book Review\, CALYX\, among others\, and her personal narratives as an educator can be read online at Edsurge. Amanda lives in Golden Valley\, MN\, and loves running\, reading and watching Gilmore Girls with her three “Rorys.” \nThis workshop is part of Voices Forward\, a poetry and public humanities initiative for emerging youth poets (ages 13-19) from across Minnesota. SUMMARY:North Mankato – Social Studies Standards Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:This two-day workshop series (July 29 and August 17\, 2026) is designed to equip K–12 teachers and school leaders with the knowledge and tools needed to successfully implement the new social studies standards for the 2026–27 school year. Participants will engage in a guided exploration of the revised standards\, including analysis of major content shifts\, vertical alignment across grade levels\, and implications for curriculum planning.\n‍\nThroughout the workshop\, teams will connect the updated standards to the C3 Framework\, deepening their understanding of high-quality instructional practices and identifying necessary instructional shifts to support student learning. \nK-12 educators will receive 5.5 clock hours for completion of each sessions.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for this public seminar co-presented by Zhaashiigid Nooding (Ojibwe knowledge-holder from the White Earth Nation Reservation\, Red Lake Nation citizen) and Crystal Ng (settler hydrologist\, professor at University of Minnesota). \nManoomin (in Ojibwe)\, or natural Wild Rice\, is an aquatic plant that is central to the cultural identity of Indigenous peoples throughout the Upper Great Lakes region. Tribal harvesters also hold generations of understanding about the natural and human factors that influence its well-being. DESCRIPTION:Join the Minnesota Humanities Center\, Danger Boat Productions\, and Edge Center for the Arts for a special return visit of the Sketches of Minnesota civic improv comedy tour! This free event will use laughter and comedy to celebrate Minnesota communities\, promote dialogue\, and bridge divides. This year\, we will also be celebrating the 250th anniversary of our nation and diving into what that means for the Edge of the Wilderness. \nWe’re excited to welcome back the Sketches of Minnesota to the Edge of the Wilderness and reconnect the community. Beginning with a free catered meal\, these gatherings invite audience members to share what makes their town great\, what they think people get wrong about it\, what local divisions concern them\, and what future they imagine. DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to learn from a place shaped by history\, migration\, and spiritual practice? \nThis Learning from Place experience invites participants to explore Watt Munisotaram\, the largest Cambodian Buddhist temple in the United States\, located in the countryside of Empire\, Minnesota. Participants will engage with the temple as a living cultural and spiritual site\, learning directly from community members\, monks\, and the landscape itself. \nAs we move through the temple grounds\, we will explore Cambodia’s history and the experiences that brought Cambodian families to Minnesota – home to the fifth-largest Cambodian population in the United States. Through LESSI\, K–5 curriculum leaders and educators are equipped to strengthen interdisciplinary social studies and English language arts (ELA) instruction through cross-district learning and collaboration. \nThis 3-day institute guides participants through the curriculum writing process for inquiry-based instruction rooted in the 2021 social studies standards\, with intentional connections to the 2020 ELA standards. \nParticipants will: \n\nBuild their understanding of disciplinary literacy to support deeper student engagement\nStrengthen their ability to center student inquiry in meaningful\, standards-based instruction\nLeave with classroom-ready resources and routines that can be immediately implemented in their own classrooms and districts\n\nParticipants can expect to return to their contexts with practical tools\, stronger instructional design skills\, and concrete resources that support more engaging and rigorous social studies learning for students\, while also reducing planning time. \nK-12 Educators will receive 16.5 clock hours upon completion of the event.

SUMMARY:Emily - Sketches of Minnesota - Digging Into The Emily Mine: What Lies Ahead
DESCRIPTION:Join the Minnesota Humanities Center\, Danger Boat Productions\, and the Emily Mine Information Group for a special return visit of the Sketches of Minnesota civic improv comedy tour! These free events use laughter and comedy to celebrate Minnesota communities\, promote dialogue\, bridge divides\, and help find ways to work constructively across differences in today’s political environment. \nThis year\, Sketches of Minnesota is back and is partnering with the Emily Mine Information Group on a special event that will use laughter and comedy to dive into an important community conversation exploring the potential impacts of a manganese mine in Emily. The evening will begin with a social hour and dinner\, followed by a facilitated conversation with two experts who will share information about mine permitting\, groundwater interaction with the manganese deposit\, and potential impacts of the proposed mine. Audience members will engage with the information presented through both a Q&A and improv comedy show. \n4:30–5:30 PM: Doors open & Community Exhibits Viewing\n5:30–7:30 PM: Dinner & Program \nAbout the Speakers\nJoy Anderson\, JD-MN Center for Environmental Advocacy (MCEA) reviews mine permitting process and public input opportunities. Before joining MCEA\, Joy was a shareholder at Minneapolis law firm Gray Plant Mooty\, where she litigated cases and headed the firm’s pro bono program. Joy has provided more than 1\,200 hours of pro bono service and was named a 2018 Minnesota Attorney of the Year for her work on a pro bono case. She earned her law degree at William Mitchell College of Law and her B.A. in English and print journalism from the University of St. Thomas. \nBob Karls is a hydrogeologist with over 46 years of experience in solving environmental challenges. He has spent 40 years in consulting but has also worked for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the US Geological Survey. Bob holds a bachelor’s degree in Geology and a master’s degree in Hydrology\, from University of Minnesota and Arizona University respectively. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Learning from Place: Little Africa Plaza
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota is home to a vibrant and growing African diaspora representing many countries\, languages\, and cultural traditions. In St. Paul\, Little Africa has emerged as a cultural corridor where this diversity is expressed and rooted through entrepreneurship\, community leadership\, art\, and food. \nParticipants will gather at Little Africa Plaza and hear from community leaders and culture bearers about the vision behind the new development and the role of African entrepreneurs in shaping the corridor. The experience will include a cooking demonstration featuring injera\, the traditional Ethiopian flatbread and food samples. Through this experience\, participants will learn how food traditions carry stories of family\, culture\, and community. \nParticipants will also visit the African Museum\, Art and Culture Center\, where they will learn about ongoing efforts to elevate African art within the Little Africa cultural corridor and explore opportunities to support this vision through volunteer and event participation. \nK-12 Educators will receive 3 clock hours upon completion of the event. \nThis experience is presented in collaboration with African Economic Development Solutions (AEDS)\, a non-profit organization that supports African immigrant entrepreneurs and has helped advance the vision for Little Africa Plaza and the surrounding cultural corridor. \nRegistration\nRegistration Questions: registrations@mnhum.org | MHC Cancellation Policy \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:St. Paul - Voices Forward: Teen Poets Imagine the Future
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of teen poetry with Voices Forward at the Bell Museum. Voices Forward is a poetry and public humanities project for emerging poets (ages 13-19) from across Minnesota. Through mentorship and workshops with acclaimed Minnesota poets\, teen poets spent the summer crafting poetry that explores the Smithsonian Folklife Festival’s themes around the 250th anniversary of the country: Remembering Together\, Harmonizing Together\, Moving Together\, and Building Together. \nAt this showcase\, students will read their poetry that imagines futures for themselves\, their communities\, and the nation—in their own words! The evening will also include reflections from the poetry mentors: Michael Bazzett\, Lester Batiste\, Tarik Dobbs\, and Amanda Rosas. The reading and reflections will be set against the backdrop of the Imagine the Future gallery\, grounding us in a space that invites us to work together\, uphold community\, think big\, wonder\, and boldly ask — what futures can we imagine? When you join us early\, you can explore this gallery and dive into writing and reflect prompts to try some writing of your own. \nSchedule\n6:00 p.m. – Doors open.\n6:00–7:00 p.m. – Participants can explore the gallery Imagine the Future\, with writing and reflection prompts. DESCRIPTION:What better way to spend a summer evening than listening to great music and finding creative inspiration? Join MHC\, Mixed Precipitation\, and fellow participants for the Pickup Truck Opera’s presentation of “The Tales of Hoffmann.” Future meets past in the wild adventures of a traveling poet who encounters ghosts\, robots\, magicians\, and shape-shifting demons in pursuit of love and art! This contemporary mashup features 90’s grunge\, R&B\, and opera classics. Kick back\, relax\, and enjoy a musical extravaganza on the MHC lawn. \nPicnics\, lawn chairs\, sun umbrellas\, and blankets are welcome. Note that the performance is in an open field with minimal shade. Please plan accordingly. Restrooms will be available for use at the Minnesota Humanities Event Center.  \nAbout Mixed Precipitation\nMixed Precipitation’s mission is to create festive theatrical events that inspire social engagement. DESCRIPTION:The inaugural Midwest Black Book Fair\, which honors stories of the resistance and uplifting intersectional narratives of Blackness\, is a community-engaged event that honors Black stories and invites people from across the Midwest to participate. \nThis family friendly event will feature Black book vendors\, Black authors\, book signings/readings\, panel conversations\, writing and publishing workshops\, Black food vendors\, and more! Held during Black August\, the fair contributes to this month-long commemoration dedicated to honoring Black abolitionists\, freedom fighters\, and political prisoners. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Learning from Place: Little Mekong Cultural District
DESCRIPTION:St. Paul’s Little Mekong Cultural District invites participants into a vibrant Southeast Asian cultural corridor shaped by migration\, resilience\, and entrepreneurship along University Avenue. The experience begins at XIA Books & Cafe\, where community leader Va-Megn Thoj welcomes participants and grounds the journey in the story of the Mekong River and its connection to identity\, history\, and place. From there\, participants walk through a neighborhood alive with murals\, shops\, and community stories. Along the way\, elders from Vietnamese Social Services share reflections of pride\, gratitude\, and courage\, including stories from those who came to the United States as refugees of war. At the Hmong Cultural Center\, participants deepen their understanding of the importance\, and the difficulty\, of preserving oral-based histories. If scheduling permits\, they may also have the opportunity to hear the sound of the qeej\, a traditional Hmong instrument whose breath\, rhythm\, and movement carry ancestral voice and ceremony. The journey continues through local restaurants\, where dishes such as somlaw kao kou\, a savory Cambodian soup with green papaya\, eggplant\, and pumpkin\, evoke memories of family\, tradition\, and foodways across generations and borders. The experience closes with group reflection\, inviting participants to connect these sensory and human experiences to a deeper understanding of community\, culture\, and belonging. \nK-12 Educators will receive 3 clock hours upon completion of the event. \nThis experience is presented in collaboration with Asian Economic Development Association (AEDA)\, a non-profit organization whose mission is to create economic and cultural opportunities for Twin Cities Asian American. \nRegistration\nTo ensure that cost is not a barrier\, we have a limited number of complimentary spaces available for Minnesota residents.
