SUMMARY:Duluth - Learning from Place: Anishinaabe Duluth/Misaabekong
DESCRIPTION:Experience Duluth/Misaabekong through Ojibwe/Anishinaabe perspectives\, exploring the stories\, histories\, and relationships to place that have shaped the city and continue to resonate today. \n\nWe will convene at the Duluth Art Institute\, where artist\, historian\, teacher\, and writer Carl Gawboy (Bois Forte Nation) will explore the Ojibwe fur trade and the relationships among Anishinaabe communities\, European traders\, waterways\, and the developing economy of the region. \n\nFrom there\, participants will travel by bus to sites throughout Duluth/Misaabekong\, including a stop at the Chief Buffalo mural with artist Michelle DeFoe (Red Cliff Anishinaabe Nation). Through the story of Chief Buffalo (Bizhiki)\, participants will explore Ojibwe leadership\, diplomacy\, sovereignty\, and connections to Duluth and Lake Superior. \n\nThe experience will also engage with Anishinaabe oral history and traditional knowledge\, including stories of Misaabekong—“the place of the giant”—Thunderbirds\, origins\, and relationships among people and the natural world. These stories\, shared by Linda LeGarde Grover (Bois Forte Nation) and Wendy Savage (Fond du Lac Nation)\, carry teachings about place\, relationship\, responsibility\, and identity that continue to hold meaning today. \n\nTogether\, these perspectives offer more than additional stories about Duluth’s past. They invite participants to consider how the histories we remember—and the knowledge and voices we center—shape how we understand a place in the present. Through walking\, bus travel\, storytelling\, conversation\, and observation\, participants will encounter familiar places in new ways and gain a fuller understanding of the enduring relationships among people\, land\, water\, and community that continue to shape Duluth/Misaabekong today. \n\nThe experience is curated and facilitated by Christina Woods (Bois Forte Nation)\, an Anishinaabekwe educator and community leader who serves as Executive Director of the Duluth Art Institute. Through the experience\, Woods invites participants to consider how place itself holds memory—and how Anishinaabe perspectives can deepen our understanding of the landscape beneath and around the city. \n\n\n\n\n+Meet the Facilitator and Speakers\n\n\n\n\nChristina Woods serves as the Duluth Art Institute’s (DAI) first Anishinaabe Executive Director. Christina is an enrolled member of the Bois Forte Nation and works closely with the Anishinaabe community as a leader and mentor. Christina also conducts trainings and workshops on equity\, diversity and inclusion including the program she created for the DAI\, Commission Your Bias. \n\n\n\nChristina’s success includes a 14-year career teaching\, ten years narrating and on camera work on the national program Native Report\, and 30 years writing curriculum and grants\, fundraising\, and diversity/inclusion consultation. Christina thoughtfully serves our community with a vision to the future. She lives in Duluth\, MN with her acknowledged home in the Bois Forte Nation of Northern MN. \n\n\n\nCarl Gawboy\, born and raised in Ely\, Minnesota\, is an enrolled member of the Bois Forte Nation. Primarily a watercolorist\, he is also known for acrylic murals at the Superior Public Library\, Bois Forte Heritage Center\, and Grand Portage National Monument. His work tells stories of Ojibwe history\, culture\, and northern life. He authored and illustrated Fur Trade Nation: An Ojibwe’s Graphic History. \n\n\n\nMichelle DeFoe is an artist enrolled in the Red Cliff Anishinaabe Nation. She is working towards revitalizing Anishinaabe cultural arts\, including moccasin making and beadwork. She teaches community classes to pass this knowledge on to future generations. She is the award-winning author of several books\, including The Road Back to Sweetgrass\, Onigamiising: Seasons of an Ojibwe Year\, In the Night of Memory\, A Song Over Miskwaa Rapids\, and Gichigami Hearts: Stories and Histories from Misaabekong. \n\n\n\nWendy Lee Savage is an enrolled member of the Fond du Lac Nation\, artist\, educator\, curator\, and consultant. SUMMARY:Ely – Iron Range: Minnesota Building America Film Screening with Pam Brunfelt
DESCRIPTION:Join the Minnesota Humanities Center for a special screening of the Emmy Award-winning documentary Iron Range: Minnesota Building America at the Ely’s Historic State Theater. \nMinnesota’s Iron Range has played an extraordinary role in shaping the state and the nation. Just 10 miles wide and 100 miles long\, this region supplied the iron ore\, labor\, and human stories that helped build modern America. \nThe documentary grew out of an immersive Minnesota Humanities Center education program led in part by Iron Range historian\, scholar\, and educator Pam Brunfelt. Offered over two years\, the weeklong program brought 80 teachers from across the country to the Range for intensive study and discussion of the region’s history\, its people\, and its contributions to American history. Teachers returned to their classrooms with new knowledge and resources for incorporating the story of the Iron Range into their American history curriculum. \nThat experience helped inspire Iron Range | Minnesota Building America\, produced by the Minnesota Humanities Center in partnership with Twin Cities Public Television. The film explores the people and forces that shaped the Range and considers the region’s enduring place in Minnesota and American history. \nFollowing the screening\, join us for a conversation with Pam Brunfelt\, who appears in the documentary. Together\, we will reflect on the stories and history featured in the film\, the experience that helped inspire its creation\, and the remarkable role the Iron Range has played in shaping Minnesota and the nation. \nRegistration\nThis event is free\, however registration is required. \nRegistration Questions: registrations@mnhum.org \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Edina - Objects of War: A Storytelling Circle of Service\, Memory\, & Community
DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota Humanities Center invites you to an afternoon of conversation\, reflection\, and storytelling. As part of Many Fronts | Veterans & Community Voices\, Objects of War brings together Veterans\, military families\, and community members to share personal stories that deepen understanding of military service\, sacrifice\, resilience\, and the lasting human impacts of war. \nParticipants are invited to bring an object connected to military service or the experience of war – a set of dog tags\, a medal\, a photograph\, a letter\, a keepsake\, or another meaningful item – and share the story behind it. \nGuided by trained Story Circle facilitators\, participants will listen\, reflect\, and discover how personal stories preserve community memory\, foster empathy\, and create meaningful connections across generations and experiences. Whether you served\, supported someone who served\, or carry a family story shaped by military service\, your perspective is welcome. \nOctober is Veterans’ Voices Month in Minnesota\, and MHC is focused on honoring service\, lived experiences\, and the preservation of Veterans’ personal stories through reflection and intergenerational conversations. This Objects of War story circle event will emphasize the people who are gathered with their meaningful artifacts\, and the stories they will share. As we recognize the 250th anniversary of America\, MHC – along with humanities councils across the nation – is hosting programs and events like these story circle experiences to empower Americans to take steps toward a more perfect union. \nRegistration\nThis event is free\, however registration with Edina Parks & Recreation is required. \nRegistration Questions: registrations@mnhum.org \nRegister Now
