SUMMARY:St. Paul - Learning from Place: Rondo Tour
DESCRIPTION:Learning from Place: Rondo Tour is a bus tour comprised of ten historic sites\, a walking tour of Rondo Plaza\, and a unique opportunity to be engaged in a service project with the Hallie Q. Brown Center. The bus and walking tour will be guided by Marvin Anderson a resident who is acknowledged as “the Godfather” of Rondo. This event begins and concludes at the historic Hallie Q. Brown Center with a presentation and tour led by Benny Roberts\, Executive Director. \nHistorically\, the Rondo Neighborhood has taken pride in its Black owned businesses\, churches\, schools\, and the significance of being of service to neighbors when in need. During the mid-1950s\, the construction of Interstate 94 began the devastation that divided the community physically and economically. This revitalization tour holds fast the passion of those who never gave up the vision of regaining the vibrancy and strength that once existed in Rondo. \nRegistration\nThis event is at capacity. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Voices Forward: Teen Poets Imagine the Future
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of teen poetry with Voices Forward at the Bell Museum. Voices Forward is a poetry and public humanities project for emerging poets (ages 13-19) from across Minnesota. Through mentorship and workshops with acclaimed Minnesota poets\, teen poets spent the summer crafting poetry that explores the Smithsonian Folklife Festival’s themes around the 250th anniversary of the country: Remembering Together\, Harmonizing Together\, Moving Together\, and Building Together. \nAt this showcase\, students will read their poetry that imagines futures for themselves\, their communities\, and the nation—in their own words! The evening will also include reflections from the poetry mentors: Michael Bazzett\, Lester Batiste\, Tarik Dobbs\, and Amanda Rosas. The reading and reflections will be set against the backdrop of the Imagine the Future gallery\, grounding us in a space that invites us to work together\, uphold community\, think big\, wonder\, and boldly ask — what futures can we imagine? When you join us early\, you can explore this gallery and dive into writing and reflect prompts to try some writing of your own. \nSchedule\n6:00 p.m. – Doors open.\n6:00–7:00 p.m. – Participants can explore the gallery Imagine the Future\, with writing and reflection prompts. The Bell’s Curiosity Shop will be open.\n7:00 p.m. –  Program participants will read their work.\n7:45 p.m. – Program ends. \nAbout Voices Forward\nVoices Forward is part of By the People: Conversations Beyond 250\, a series of community-driven programs created by humanities councils across the United States\, its territories\, and the District of Columbia in collaboration with local partners. More than a documentary\, the film seeks to offer a collective vision\, celebrating Latine leadership while reflecting on history\, diversity\, community investment\, innovation\, and the strength of intergenerational ties. \nThe evening will feature a screening of NUESTRO NORTE\, followed by a panel reflection\, and special recognition of Minnesota’s deep Latine history and roots. \nWe are especially proud to present the film at the F.K. SUMMARY:Minneapolis - The Making of America Film Premiere & Gallery Reception
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Monique Linder\, and produced by OMG Studios in partnership with MHC\, the film explores how Enlightenment-era systems of knowledge—art\, science\, architecture\, and cartography—produced enduring frameworks for racial slavery\, territorial extraction\, and Indigenous dispossession in what became the United States of America. The film\, the seventh in the Juneteenth Reckoning with Slavery film series from OMG Studios\, advances the argument that these outcomes were deliberate consequences of its visual and systemic commitments to order\, hierarchy\, and control. \n\n“After our last film about Reconstruction Destructed\, I felt it was important that the next film go back to the very beginning\, the making of America. This film really helps tie all the pieces in the Juneteenth Reckoning with Slavery film series together in a significant way. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the official launch of Marie Louise Bottineau Baldwin: Political Pathfinder\, a newly released title in the acclaimed Native American Lives Series. Hear from series editor and former Minneapolis Poet Laureate Heid E. Erdrich alongside author Hema Erdrich Patel as they discuss the life\, legacy\, and political vision of Marie Louise Bottineau Baldwin. \nThis biography was written because Baldwin’s story\, while not widely known\, has much to teach us today. One of the first Native people to work in the White House in 1904\, Baldwin’s legal career in which she spent decades defending her tribe in Washington\, exemplifies how politics and activism can be bridged through advocacy\, and that education is a path to sovereignty. \nDesigned especially for educators\, parents\, and youth\, this event is an opportunity to engage directly with the creators of the series and explore the teachings of Baldwin’s story. The evening will include a reading\, conversation with the authors\, and space for questions and dialogue. \nAbout the Author\nHema Erdrich Patel is a writer\, artist\, dog lover\, and lifelong student. She comes from a beautiful blend of cultures—on her mother’s side\, mixed German and Turtle Mountain Ojibwe\, and her father’s side\, Gujarati Indian. She was raised in Belcourt\, North Dakota\, and Sisseton\, South Dakota\, and calls Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, home. She graduated from Yale University with a BA in the History of Science\, Health\, and Medicine and an Education Studies Certificate. Her most recent artistic adventure consisted of a three-month bharatanatyam dance intensive in Ahmedabad\, Gujarat\, India. She is pursuing a path toward medicine. \nAbout the Editor\nHeid E. Erdrich is the author of a dozen books in both poetry and prose. She grew up in North Dakota and is Ojibwe\, enrolled at Turtle Mountain. She curates art exhibits\, teaches\, researches\, and collaborates with other artists. In 2024\, Heid served as the Inaugural Minneapolis Poet Laureate. She is the 2025-2026 Camille Gage Fellow. \nThis event is presented in partnership with Birchbark Books which is operated by a spirited collection of people who believe in the power of good writing\, the beauty of handmade art\, the strength of Native culture\, and the importance of small and intimate bookstores. \nRegistration\nRegistration for this event has SOLD OUT. \nRegistration Questions: registrations@mnhum.org \nJoin the Waitlist
