DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota Writers Series welcomes Jeremy Norton\, author of “Trauma Sponges: Dispatches from the Scarred Heart of Emergency Response” for a hybrid in-person and virtual event. Norton will use excerpts from his new book\, published by University of Minnesota Press\, to spark conversations with his co-panelists\, Jeanelle Austin from the George Floyd Global Memorial\, and attorney and police-reform activist Abigail Cerra. The three will explore topics ranging from racial inequality to mental health to toxic masculinity for a conversation titled\, “Witness and Testify: Towards a More Just Community.” \nThe Minnesota Writers Series is thankful for partners doing similarly aligned work supporting a diversity of Minnesota voices\, like our community partner for this event\, the MN Black Authors Expo: Leading\, promoting and showcasing MN Black Authors. \nAbout the book:\nIn this remarkable memoir\, Jeremy Norton marshals twenty-two years of professional experience to offer\, with compassion and critique\, an extraordinary portrayal of emergency responders. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Minnesota Writers Series: Rose McGee Children's Book Release
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota Humanities Center\, in partnership with Minnesota Historical Society Press\, is pleased to host the launch of Rose McGee’s new children’s book\, “Can’t Nobody Make a Sweet Potato Pie Like Our Mama!” The author and the book’s illustrator\, Christopheraaron Deanes\, will read from the book and participate in a moderated discussion around themes related to food and family. Freddie Bell\, KMOJ radio personality and Minnesota Broadcasting Hall of Fame inductee\, will moderate the discussion. The author and illustrator will be available for a book signing and discussion at a reception following the event.  Books will be available for purchase from Black Garnet Books. Part of the Minnesota Writers Series.  \nAbout the Book\nIn Rose McGee’s charming picture book (3-7 age range)\, young Marie and Landon think that their grandmother\, “Mama\,” makes the best sweet potato pies ever. The twins sometimes wonder if there might be some magic involved. Neighbors dealing with bad news or struggling with loss stop by for a slice. Sharing the pies—their sweet aroma\, their familiar texture—in Mama’s warm home brings them comfort. The twins marvel at the neighbors’ transformation. Maybe\, the twins realize\, the magic isn’t in the pies. Maybe it’s in their mama.  \nAbout the Author and Illustrator\nRose McGee’s touching story expands on her own work building community and relationships through her “baketivism” as the leader of the nonprofit Sweet Potato Comfort Pie. She is a well-known facilitator\, the playwright behind “Kumbayah: The Juneteenth Story\,” one of Minnesota’s 50 Over 50\, and a 2019 Bush Fellow. Her work has been featured in the national PBS documentary\, “A Few Good Pie Places\,” and in the TEDx Talk\, “The Power of Pie.” \nChristopheraaron Deanes is an artist and educator working to build creative equitable spaces that support and engage communities. As an artist\, Christopheraaron is represented in local galleries and has created metal enamel sculptures as well as murals sited throughout the Twin Cities. As an educator\, he works in the administration offices at Fridley Public Schools and with communities of color around Minneapolis and St. Paul. SUMMARY:Duluth - Minnesota Writers Series: The Sky Watched
DESCRIPTION:Author and poet Linda LeGarde Grover will be joining the Minnesota Writers Series for a special event in Duluth. In addition to reading selections from her recently  re-released collection\, The Sky Watched: Poems of Ojibwe Lives (University of Minnesota Press\, 2022)\, Grover will also join in conversation with Dr. Jill M. Doerfler\, head of American Indian Studies at University of Minnesota-Duluth\, about the joys and complexities of leading a life devoted to writing and poetry\, and the ways in which poetry has connected her further to her Native culture. In celebration of poets at all stages of their writing journey\, during the second half of the event\,  members of the audience will be invited to share their own poetry as time allows. Co-sponsored by the American Indian Community Housing Organization\, also the host site for this event.  \nAbout the book: The Sky Watched is a collective memoir in poetry of an Ojibwe family and tribal community\, from creation myth to this day\, updated with new poems. The collection gives poetic voice\, in English and Ojibwe\, those assembled here—voices of history\, of memory and experience\, of children and elders\, Indian boarding school students\, tribal storytellers\, and the Manidoog\, the unseen beings who surround our lives—come together to create a collective memoir in poetry as expansive and particular as the starry sky.  \nAbout the author: Linda LeGarde Grover is professor emerita of American Indian studies at the University of Minnesota Duluth and a member of the Bois Forte Band of Ojibwe. Her books The Road Back to Sweetgrass\, Onigamiising: Seasons of an Ojibwe Year\, In the Night of Memory\, and Gichigami Hearts: Stories and Histories from Misaabekong\, all from Minnesota\, have earned numerous awards\, including the Native Writers Circle of the Americas First Book Award; Northeastern Minnesota Book Awards for poetry\, memoir\, and fiction; and a Minnesota Book Award for memoir and creative nonfiction. Her book of stories The Dance Boots received the Flannery O’Connor Award and the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize. \nAbout the moderator: Jill Doerfler is a professor and department head of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota Duluth. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Trans Day of Visibility for a conversation with author Lynette Reini-Grandell\, author of “Wild Things: A Trans Glam Punk Rock Love Story\,” in a deeply personal conversation with her trans spouse\, Venus de Mars. The two will discuss the themes and stories in the book\, which follows the two through the art\, literary\, and indie rock worlds of Minneapolis and New York in the 1990s and early 2000s as they learn\, change\, and grow together\, navigating the transition\, the communities they found\, and the hostility they faced. Part of the Minnesota Writers Series. Sponsored by RECLAIM\, whose mission is to increase access to mental health care so queer and trans youth may reclaim their lives from oppression in all its forms. \nAbout the Author\nLynette Reini-Grandell is the author of “Wild Verge” (Holy Cow! Press\, 2018)\, “Approaching the Gate” (Holy Cow! Press\, 2014)\, and the forthcoming memoir\, “Wild Things: A Trans Glam Punk Rock Love Story” (Minnesota Historical Society Press\, 2023).  Other work has appeared in Alligator Juniper\, The Understanding between Foxes and Light\, Poetry Motel\, Revolver\, Poetry City U.S.A.\, and Seminary Ridge Review\, among others.  She has been nominated for a Pushcart and received grants for her work from the Finlandia Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board.  She performs with the Bosso Poetry Company and the jazz/poetry collective Sonoglyph. Her work is often inspired by Finnish folk culture and song\, and she frequently collaborates with Nordic Roots artists in multimedia performances. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Latine Hxstory and the Xican@ Pop-Up Book Movement
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will introduce teachers to the Xican@ Pop-Up Book (XPUB) movement that was developed by Dr. Elias Serna and John Avalos Rios as a response to the dismantling of the Mexican American Studies (MAS) Department in Tucson\, Arizona. Participants will learn about the hxstorical significance of the XPUB movement in teaching hxstory in US schools that improves academics for Latine students\, as well as associated controversies. In group discussion and hands-on activities\, teachers will learn about incorporating the XPUB framework to teach Latine history and topics that are important to the community but are often left out of school curriculum\, such as the 1968 East L.A. Walkouts\, and the landmark case Mendez v. Westminster. Participants will also have an opportunity to explore how to use the pop-up book framework broadly in their classroom to transform curriculum and increase student engagement. \nScholar definitions: \n*Hxstory is used to acknowledge the untold hxstories and the collective push to reclaim the lost\n**The Xican@ Pop Up book (XPUB) Framework was designed to teach history and stories from students and community perspectives\n***Latine is used instead of the Spanish use of masculine “o\,” to include people of all genders \nScholar and Teacher Kleber Ortiz\, Latino immigrant from Ecuador\, is an instructor in the School of Education at Minneapolis College and adjunct professor at Hamline University. He has worked in the Education field for over 15 years\, his teaching experiences include middle school\, high school\, post secondary\, curriculum development and teacher professional development\, planning and implementation. He has lead workshops at various events that focus on Ethnic Studies\, Equity\, Latine History\, Culturally Responsive Pedagogy\, Critical Literacy and closing the Opportunity Gap. \nLead Teacher Natalia Benjamin taught high school Ethnic Studies and Multilingual Learners in Rochester\, MN for 7 years where she currently works as the Coordinator for Multilingual Learning. She is dually licensed in K-12 ESL and reading\, and was named the 2021 Minnesota Teacher of the Year. Natalia is passionate about the liberation of marginalized students and focuses on advocacy for multilingual/multicultural education\, identity work\, Heritage Speakers\, language justice\, and student-centered humanizing pedagogies. DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating the release of David Mura’s new book\, “The Stories Whiteness Tells Itself: Racial Myths and Our American Narratives”\, released in January of 2023 by University of Minnesota Press. Following a reading of selections from the new book\, Mura will be joined by best-selling author and President of Innocent Technologies Alexs Pate for a discussion on the issues of race\, history and education. A book signing will follow the talk. Part of the Minnesota Writers Series. Co-sponsored by University of Minnesota Press.  \nAbout the book: From the country’s founding through the summer of Black Lives Matter in 2020\, Mura’s new book unmasks how white stories about race attempt to erase the brutality of the past and underpin systemic racism in the present. Mura shows how deeply we need to change our racial narratives to dissolve the myth of Whiteness and fully acknowledge the experiences of Black Americans. Poet Douglas Kearney has said of Mura’s new book that it “offers what so many Americans claim they want: a rigorous education in perceiving themselves stripped of their dearest myths.” \nAbout the author: David Mura is a poet\, writer of creative nonfiction and fiction\, critic\, and playwright. DESCRIPTION:Poet Stefan Lovasik is the next featured author in our new Minnesota Writers Series. Lovasik\, a Viet Nam combat veteran\, has published three poetry collections. His most recent\, The Latitude of a Mercy\, was published by New York Quarterly Books. His work has appeared in national magazines such as American Literary Review\, Consequence and New York Quarterly. He is a facilitator for Warrior Writers-Twin Cities and a staff editor for Pedestal Magazine. Lovasik’s work brings into striking focus the landscape of war; the lasting physical\, moral and psychological consequences of it; and the resilience of the human spirit. He will discuss his latest collection\, the power of writing as a tool for healing\, and his work on his upcoming memoir. DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota Humanities Center welcomes the next author in our Minnesota Writers Series\, Andrea Gilats\, who will be reading from her book\, “After Effects: A Memoir of Complicated Grief.” In addition to talking about her own experience with grief following the death of her husband\, Gilats will also discuss how the process of writing helped with her own healing and understanding. Following the reading\, the author will be joined by Dr. Ben Trappey\, co-director of the University of Minnesota’s Center for the Art of Medicine (CFAM)\, for a discussion on complicated grief and the healing benefits of writing\, both physical and emotional.  \nRegistration\nWhile this program is free and open to all with registration\, part of the CFAM’s mission is to cultivate creativity\, curiosity and empathy in physicians and physicians-in-training through the arts and humanities. SUMMARY:Mankato - The Legacy of 9/11: Four Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:The September 11 attacks of 2001 remain among the most significant events in U.S. history\, with lasting impacts on people from all walks of life. For many who experienced that day\, the events of 9/11 are a flashbulb memory: we can remember exactly where we were\, what we were doing\, and how we felt. In conjunction with the 9/11 Exhibit from the MN Military and Veterans Museum\, this moderated discussion will examine several perspectives on 9/11\, exploring reflections\, memories\, and personal stories of how the event has influenced each speaker’s life. We welcome community to gather to reflect on these memories\, stories\, and artifacts\, as we grapple not only with the legacies of 9/11 but with the effects of war and conflicts affecting the world today. \nSpeakers include Yalda Hamidi\, storyteller\, Asst. SUMMARY:St. Paul – Educator Workshop: Black Freedom Struggles
DESCRIPTION:Black Freedom Struggles\, with Adam Bledsoe and Lauretta Dawolo-Towns\nThis workshop will explore Black struggle as a global phenomenon with particular emphasis on historical and current movements led by Black communities. During this interactive workshop we will investigate Black freedom struggles from around the world\, paying special attention to these Black forms of struggle as expressions of Black agency and self-definition. The workshop will help broaden our understanding of Black freedom struggles beyond well-known moments like the emancipation of slavery and Juneteenth\, as we delve into topics like maroon communities\, work stoppages\, and self-defense from locations including the U.S.\, Brazil\, Cuba\, and Angola. We will also emphasize how historical struggles continue to influence present-day politics. Through large and small group projects and hands-on activities we will think through how to best incorporate these often-unknown struggles into classroom curriculum. Participants will have access to new resources\, materials\, and tools to help improve student learning in the classroom. \n  \nScholar Adam Bledsoe is an assistant professor in the Geography\, Environment & Society Department at the University of Minnesota. Born and raised in the Twin Cities\, Adam’s intellectual and political commitments revolve around the ways in which Afro-Diasporic communities analyze and critique dominant forms of politics\, while also conceiving of\, and enacting\, their own political formations. His work has taken him around the United States\, the Caribbean\, Central America\, and South America\, where he has learned from\, and exchanged ideas with\, a variety of Black communities. \n  \nLead Teacher Lauretta Dawolo Towns earned her B.A. in English and American & Racial Multicultural Studies with a Media Studies minor at St. Olaf College in 2004. Her professional background is in community and ethnic media\, specializing in coverage of underrepresented and underserved populations. In 2016\, she received a Master of Arts in Education from Augsburg University after earning a teaching license in Communication Arts and Literature. She currently teaches 8th grade English Language Arts at Roseville Middle School\, and also teaches in the Adult Basic Education program in the same district. DESCRIPTION:Join the Minnesota Humanities Center (MHC) for readings and a discussion around the book\, “What We Hunger For: Refugee and Immigrant Stories about Food and Family.” This book is the first text featured in MHC’s new Minnesota Writers Series\, which amplifies recent publications from Minnesota authors. \nThe book’s editor\, Sun Yung Shin\, and contributors V.V. (Sugi) Ganeshananthan\, May Lee-Yang\, and Ifrah Mansour will read excerpts from the book and participate in a discussion around food\, community\, and the immigrant and refugee experience in Minnesota. Panelists and audience members will also be invited to take part in an object-based storytelling circle. Please bring an object\, or have one in mind\, that helps tell the story of the role of food in your culture. It could be a kitchen tool\, spice\, photograph\, or anything else that connects to your story of food\, family\, or community. \nAlthough this event was designed with members of immigrant and refugee communities in mind\, all are welcome. She is the author of poetry collections The Wet Hex (2022)\, Unbearable Splendor (finalist for the 2017 PEN USA Literary Award for Poetry\, winner of the 2016 Minnesota Book Award for poetry); Rough\, and Savage; and Skirt Full of Black (winner of the 2007 Asian American Literary Award for poetry)\, co-editor of Outsiders Within: Writing on Transracial Adoption\, and author of bilingual illustrated book for children Cooper’s Lesson and the coauthor with John Coy\, Shannon Gibney\, and Diane Wilson of Where We Come From\, an illustrated book for children (2022). \nV.V. (Sugi) Ganeshananthan\, a fiction writer and journalist\, is the author of Love Marriage\, a novel set in Sri Lanka and its diaspora communities. The book was longlisted for the Orange Prize and named one of Washington Post Book World’s Best of 2008. She is the cohost of Literary Hub’s Fiction/Non/Fiction podcast\, which is about the intersection of literature and the news. Excerpts from her second novel\, forthcoming from Random House\, have appeared in Granta\, Ploughshares\, and Best American Nonrequired Reading. \nMay Lee-Yang is a Minnesota-based Hmong American writer\, performance artist\, and teacher. Her theater works include The Korean Drama Addict’s Guide to Losing Your Virginity\, Confessions of a Lazy Hmong Woman\, and Ten Reasons Why I’d Be a Bad Porn Star. Her artmaking has been supported by the Playwrights’ Center McKnight Fellowship\, the Jerome Foundation\, the National Performance Network\, the Bush Foundation\, the Minnesota State Arts Board\, and the Loft Literary Center. She has an MFA in creative writing from the University of Minnesota. \nIfrah Mansour is a Somali\, refugee\, Muslim\, multimedia artist and an educator based in Minnesota. Her artwork explores trauma through the eyes of children to uncover the resiliencies of blacks\, Muslims\, and refugees by interweaving poetry\, puppetry\, films\, and installations. In doing so\, we are creating a space to hear from those who may not be directly involved with the military\, but who remain affected through their experiences\, whether intergenerationally\, through immigration\, or refugee resettlement. In this facilitated listening session\, participants will be led in a meaningful dialogue to connect with others and share their perspectives. Dinner will be provided; spaces are limited and there is no cost to attend this event.
