SUMMARY:St. Paul - Leading Elementary Social Studies Inquiry (LESSI) Institute
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to do more with less. The Minnesota Humanities Center\, in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Education\, presents the LESSI Institute. Through LESSI\, K–5 curriculum leaders and educators are equipped to strengthen interdisciplinary social studies and English language arts (ELA) instruction through cross-district learning and collaboration. \nThis 3-day institute guides participants through the curriculum writing process for inquiry-based instruction rooted in the 2021 social studies standards\, with intentional connections to the 2020 ELA standards. \nParticipants will: \n\nBuild their understanding of disciplinary literacy to support deeper student engagement\nStrengthen their ability to center student inquiry in meaningful\, standards-based instruction\nLeave with classroom-ready resources and routines that can be immediately implemented in their own classrooms and districts\n\nParticipants can expect to return to their contexts with practical tools\, stronger instructional design skills\, and concrete resources that support more engaging and rigorous social studies learning for students\, while also reducing planning time. \nK-12 Educators will receive 16.5 clock hours upon completion of the event.

Participants will engage in a guided exploration of the revised standards\, including analysis of major content shifts\, vertical alignment across grade levels\, and implications for curriculum planning.\n‍\nThroughout the workshop\, teams will connect the updated standards to the C3 Framework\, deepening their understanding of high-quality instructional practices and identifying necessary instructional shifts to support student learning. \nK-12 educators will receive 5.5 clock hours for completion of each sessions.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Minnesota Humanities Center\, Danger Boat Productions\, and the Emily Mine Information Group for a special return visit of the Sketches of Minnesota civic improv comedy tour! These free events use laughter and comedy to celebrate Minnesota communities\, promote dialogue\, bridge divides\, and help find ways to work constructively across differences in today’s political environment. \nThis year\, Sketches of Minnesota is back and is partnering with the Emily Mine Information Group on a special event that will use laughter and comedy to dive into an important community conversation exploring the potential impacts of a manganese mine in Emily. The evening will begin with a social hour and dinner\, followed by a facilitated conversation with two experts who will share information about mine permitting\, groundwater interaction with the manganese deposit\, and potential impacts of the proposed mine. Audience members will engage with the information presented through both a Q&A and improv comedy show. \n4:30–5:30 PM: Doors open & Community Exhibits Viewing\n5:30–7:30 PM: Dinner & Program \nAbout the Speakers\nJoy Anderson\, JD-MN Center for Environmental Advocacy (MCEA) reviews mine permitting process and public input opportunities. Before joining MCEA\, Joy was a shareholder at Minneapolis law firm Gray Plant Mooty\, where she litigated cases and headed the firm’s pro bono program. Joy has provided more than 1\,200 hours of pro bono service and was named a 2018 Minnesota Attorney of the Year for her work on a pro bono case. She earned her law degree at William Mitchell College of Law and her B.A. in English and print journalism from the University of St. Thomas. \nBob Karls is a hydrogeologist with over 46 years of experience in solving environmental challenges. He has spent 40 years in consulting but has also worked for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the US Geological Survey. Bob holds a bachelor’s degree in Geology and a master’s degree in Hydrology\, from University of Minnesota and Arizona University respectively. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Learning from Place: Little Africa Plaza
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota is home to a vibrant and growing African diaspora representing many countries\, languages\, and cultural traditions. In St. Paul\, Little Africa has emerged as a cultural corridor where this diversity is expressed and rooted through entrepreneurship\, community leadership\, art\, and food. \nParticipants will gather at Little Africa Plaza and hear from community leaders and culture bearers about the vision behind the new development and the role of African entrepreneurs in shaping the corridor. The experience will include a cooking demonstration featuring injera\, the traditional Ethiopian flatbread and food samples. Join MHC\, Mixed Precipitation\, and fellow participants for the Pickup Truck Opera’s presentation of “The Tales of Hoffmann.” Future meets past in the wild adventures of a traveling poet who encounters ghosts\, robots\, magicians\, and shape-shifting demons in pursuit of love and art! This contemporary mashup features 90’s grunge\, R&B\, and opera classics. Kick back\, relax\, and enjoy a musical extravaganza on the MHC lawn. \nPicnics\, lawn chairs\, sun umbrellas\, and blankets are welcome. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Learning from Place: Little Mekong Cultural District
DESCRIPTION:St. Paul’s Little Mekong Cultural District invites participants into a vibrant Southeast Asian cultural corridor shaped by migration\, resilience\, and entrepreneurship along University Avenue. The experience begins at XIA Books & Cafe\, where community leader Va-Megn Thoj welcomes participants and grounds the journey in the story of the Mekong River and its connection to identity\, history\, and place. From there\, participants walk through a neighborhood alive with murals\, shops\, and community stories. Along the way\, elders from Vietnamese Social Services share reflections of pride\, gratitude\, and courage\, including stories from those who came to the United States as refugees of war. At the Hmong Cultural Center\, participants deepen their understanding of the importance\, and the difficulty\, of preserving oral-based histories. If scheduling permits\, they may also have the opportunity to hear the sound of the qeej\, a traditional Hmong instrument whose breath\, rhythm\, and movement carry ancestral voice and ceremony. The journey continues through local restaurants\, where dishes such as somlaw kao kou\, a savory Cambodian soup with green papaya\, eggplant\, and pumpkin\, evoke memories of family\, tradition\, and foodways across generations and borders. SUMMARY:St. Paul – Learning Through Play: An Ojibwe Games Workshop for Educators
DESCRIPTION:Join the Minnesota Humanities Center and Tony Drews of Nashke Native Games for an interactive professional development experience exploring how Ojibwe games can be used in K–12 classrooms. Through hands-on participation\, educators will experience culturally grounded games and consider how they can support engagement\, retention\, and classroom learning. \nResearch on game-based learning shows that thoughtfully designed games can increase student engagement and support deeper understanding of academic content. \nThroughout this event\, educators will explore Nashke Native Games and practical strategies for integrating Ojibwe language\, history\, and culture into instruction. Discussions will highlight how games can support engagement\, inquiry\, and connections to Indigenous learning. \nParticipants will be introduced to Minnesota Humanities Center resources\, including the Native American Lives biography series\, educator guides\, and newly developed lesson plans designed for Indigenous Peoples Day and year-round classroom use. These materials are aligned with Minnesota’s Indigenous Education for All state requirements\, which support the inclusion of Indigenous histories\, cultures\, and perspectives across K–12 curriculum. \nThe evening begins with a light dinner and conversation\, followed by gameplay\, resource sharing\, and opportunities to connect with fellow educators. Participants will also have a chance to win educational resources and games through a raffle. \nWhether you teach elementary\, middle\, or high school students\, you’ll leave with practical classroom ideas and new ways to engage students with Indigenous histories and experiences. DESCRIPTION:The State Fair is over\, Labor Day has come and gone\, and homework is back. Summer’s end can be tough\, but MHC’s Summer on the Lawn series closes the season on a high note with a community conversation and outdoor screening of a modern movie classic! In partnership with TriLingua Cinema and SAGE GRAY\, Summer on the Lawn presents “Black Panther” movie book club. SAGE GRAY\, a noted scholar of Afrofuturist Design and developer of the Wakanda Syllabus\, will begin the evening with a community discussion about the impact of the “Black Panther” multiverse and its importance to history and contemporary culture. GRAY will then introduce a screening of “Black Panther\,” an epic tale about the struggles and triumphs of T’Challa\, King of Wakanda and the superhero Black Panther\, as he faces the dual challenges of archrival Killmonger\, a pretender to the Wakandan throne\, and the political difficulties of securing the safety and sovereignty of his country. \nThis film is rated PG-13 and runs for 134 minutes. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to consult Common Sense Media for more information on film content. \nShowtime begins right after sunset (approximately 7:20 p.m.). Light refreshments will be provided by TriLingua Cinema and MHC. Picnics\, lawn chairs\, and blankets are welcome. Note that the screening is in an open field with minimal shade. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Learning from Place experience exploring the history and legacy of the 1920 Duluth lynchings. \n\nThrough personal stories\, historical context\, and community perspectives\, event participants will examine and reflect upon one of Minnesota’s most significant acts of racial terror. Beginning at Zeitgeist Arts\, participants will walk to the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial\, which honors Elias Clayton\, Elmer Jackson\, and Isaac McGhie—the three Black men who were lynched in Duluth in 1920. \n\nAlong the walk\, participants will visit the site of a former city jail and learn about the events of 1920\, the community’s efforts to preserve and share this history\, and the Memorial’s ongoing role in fostering dialogue\, remembrance\, and understanding. The group will then travel by bus to Park Hill Cemetery\, where the three men were laid to rest. There\, participants will learn how community members worked to ensure they were no longer buried in unmarked graves\, culminating in the dedication of permanent headstones in 1991. \n\nUpon returning to Zeitgeist\, participants will have time to reflect on the experience\, engage in conversation with one another\, and consider how this history continues to shape our understanding of place\, memory\, and community. \n\nAs the nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the United States\, this experience invites participants to consider how a fuller understanding of our shared history – including stories that have too often been overlooked – strengthens our democracy and informs the future we build together. \n\nThis experience is presented in collaboration with the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial\, whose mission is to preserve the history of the 1920 Duluth lynchings\, honor the lives of Clayton\, Jackson\, and McGhie\, and inspire ongoing dialogue\, education\, and action toward racial justice. \n\n\n\n\n+Meet the Facilitator and Contributors\n\n\n\n\nCarl Crawford is a founding member of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial and a longtime Duluth community leader. He served as the City of Duluth’s Human Rights Officer from 2016–2024 and currently serves as the Accessibility and Engagement Senior Coordinator for St. Louis County. Crawford has been a longtime advocate for human rights and community engagement\, helping draft Duluth’s original Human Rights Ordinance and serving as chair of the Human Rights Commission. His contributions have been recognized with the MLK Jr. Drum Major for Peace Award and the Juneteenth Community Griot Award for outstanding servant leadership. \n\n\n\nHenry Banks is a longtime Duluth community leader\, educator\, storyteller\, and advocate with more than 35 years of volunteer service dedicated to strengthening the region and supporting a more inclusive community. He is a founder of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial and played a key role in bringing forward the effort to honor the lives and legacy of Elias Clayton\, Elmer Jackson\, and Isaac McGhie. Henry has served in numerous community leadership roles\, including as vice president of the Duluth Transit Authority\, president of the Damiano Center\, and a member of the Duluth School Board. He is the creator\, senior producer\, and host of the People of Color with Henry Banks Show and has worked as a cultural consultant\, facilitator\, and anti-racism educator. Through storytelling\, advocacy\, and community engagement\, Henry continues to help preserve local history and inspire meaningful conversations about justice and belonging. \n\n\n\nDr. Lynn Goerdt is a faculty member in the Social Work Program at the University of Wisconsin–Superior\, where she teaches courses focused on social welfare policy and macro practice. Her work centers on community advocacy\, organizational change\, and strengthening communities through research\, evaluation\, and collaboration. Lynn has spent more than 17 years working as a human services consultant in the Duluth area\, partnering with local organizations on needs assessments\, program evaluation\, and community initiatives. She is also a Board Emeritus member of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial and has been deeply engaged in preserving and sharing the history and legacy of the 1920 Duluth lynchings. Over time\, Somali Minnesotans have shaped the neighborhood into a vibrant cultural corridor filled with businesses\, mosques\, and gathering spaces where community life unfolds each day. \nParticipants will begin at Brian Coyle Community Center and hear from respected community leader Halimo Ainte\, who will share reflections on Somali migration\, community building\, and the transformation of Cedar Riverside into a thriving East African neighborhood. Participants will also visit neighborhood spaces such as a local mosque and nearby businesses that serve as everyday gathering places. \nThe experience includes a Somali coffee ceremony that reflects the tradition of roasting spices as a vehicle for welcome\, conversation\, and connection. The experience will include a cooking demonstration featuring injera\, the traditional Ethiopian flatbread and food samples. Anoka County Libraries exist to serve their communities and connect them to resources and learning\, and We Are Water MN is no exception\, bringing water education and engagement to the library. Fun fact: Anoka County is the 4th largest county in the state of Minnesota\, comprised of over 360\,000 residents! Libraries are naturally places people go to learn\, and we look forward to seeing the many water related resources\, books\, book discussions\, and beyond! \nThough most of the programming at Northtown will happen indoors\, the library also features beautiful outdoor grounds\, with a pond and Shoreline Buffer Garden that are on library premises. DESCRIPTION:Join the Minnesota Humanities Center\, Danger Boat Productions\, and Luverne community for the Sketches of Minnesota civic improv comedy tour! These free events use laughter and comedy to celebrate Minnesota communities\, promote dialogue\, bridge divides\, and help find ways to work constructively across differences in today’s political environment. \nBeginning with a catered meal\, these gatherings invite audience members to share what makes their town great\, what they think people get wrong about it\, what local divisions concern them\, and what future they imagine. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Celebrating Native Language and Culture Through the Joy of Games
DESCRIPTION:Put the cell phones away and join us for an evening of fun\, food\, and cultural connection. As we recognize National Native American Heritage Month\, the Minnesota Humanities Center welcomes Tony Drews and Nashke Native Games for a lively\, intergenerational game night. \nUnlike mainstream board games that reflect dominant cultural experiences\, Nashke Native Games centers Ojibwe language\, stories\, and values\, offering a playful way to engage with culture\, strengthen family and community bonds\, and support language preservation. The evening begins with conversation over a light dinner provided by an Indigenous caterer followed by gameplay that is certain to be fun – and educational – for all. \nGuests will also have a chance to participate in a drawing for prizes\, including items from Nashke Native Games and books from Native American Lives\, the Minnesota Humanities Center’s biography series highlighting Native voices. One title\, “Charles Albert Bender: National Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher\,” tells the story of Bender and his passion for baseball – a reminder that games\, in all forms\, bring people together. \nWhether you come with family\, friends\, or on your own\, you’ll leave with new words\, fresh insights\, and a deeper appreciation for the power of play in preserving culture and fostering connection. Each household will also receive an Ojibwe game to take home and continue learning together. Everyone is welcome—families\, educators\, and community members ages 10 and up. \nFollowing the event\, Nashke Native Games will have additional games and educational resources available for purchase. \nK-12 Educators will receive 2 clock hours upon completion of the event. \nRegistration\n$15 for adults. $10 for children 10 and under.
