SUMMARY:Duluth - Learning from Place: African American History and the Duluth Lynchings of 1920
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Learning from Place experience exploring the history and legacy of the 1920 Duluth lynchings. \n\nThrough personal stories\, historical context\, and community perspectives\, event participants will examine and reflect upon one of Minnesota’s most significant acts of racial terror. Beginning at Zeitgeist Arts\, participants will walk to the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial\, which honors Elias Clayton\, Elmer Jackson\, and Isaac McGhie—the three Black men who were lynched in Duluth in 1920. \n\nAlong the walk\, participants will visit the site of a former city jail and learn about the events of 1920\, the community’s efforts to preserve and share this history\, and the Memorial’s ongoing role in fostering dialogue\, remembrance\, and understanding. The group will then travel by bus to Park Hill Cemetery\, where the three men were laid to rest. There\, participants will learn how community members worked to ensure they were no longer buried in unmarked graves\, culminating in the dedication of permanent headstones in 1991. \n\nUpon returning to Zeitgeist\, participants will have time to reflect on the experience\, engage in conversation with one another\, and consider how this history continues to shape our understanding of place\, memory\, and community. \n\nAs the nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the United States\, this experience invites participants to consider how a fuller understanding of our shared history – including stories that have too often been overlooked – strengthens our democracy and informs the future we build together. \n\nThis experience is presented in collaboration with the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial\, whose mission is to preserve the history of the 1920 Duluth lynchings\, honor the lives of Clayton\, Jackson\, and McGhie\, and inspire ongoing dialogue\, education\, and action toward racial justice. \n\n\n\n\n+Meet the Facilitator and Contributors\n\n\n\n\nCarl Crawford is a founding member of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial and a longtime Duluth community leader. He served as the City of Duluth’s Human Rights Officer from 2016–2024 and currently serves as the Accessibility and Engagement Senior Coordinator for St. Louis County. Crawford has been a longtime advocate for human rights and community engagement\, helping draft Duluth’s original Human Rights Ordinance and serving as chair of the Human Rights Commission. His contributions have been recognized with the MLK Jr. Drum Major for Peace Award and the Juneteenth Community Griot Award for outstanding servant leadership. \n\n\n\nHenry Banks is a longtime Duluth community leader\, educator\, storyteller\, and advocate with more than 35 years of volunteer service dedicated to strengthening the region and supporting a more inclusive community. He is a founder of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial and played a key role in bringing forward the effort to honor the lives and legacy of Elias Clayton\, Elmer Jackson\, and Isaac McGhie. Henry has served in numerous community leadership roles\, including as vice president of the Duluth Transit Authority\, president of the Damiano Center\, and a member of the Duluth School Board. He is the creator\, senior producer\, and host of the People of Color with Henry Banks Show and has worked as a cultural consultant\, facilitator\, and anti-racism educator. Through storytelling\, advocacy\, and community engagement\, Henry continues to help preserve local history and inspire meaningful conversations about justice and belonging. \n\n\n\nDr. Lynn Goerdt is a faculty member in the Social Work Program at the University of Wisconsin–Superior\, where she teaches courses focused on social welfare policy and macro practice. Her work centers on community advocacy\, organizational change\, and strengthening communities through research\, evaluation\, and collaboration. Lynn has spent more than 17 years working as a human services consultant in the Duluth area\, partnering with local organizations on needs assessments\, program evaluation\, and community initiatives. She is also a Board Emeritus member of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial and has been deeply engaged in preserving and sharing the history and legacy of the 1920 Duluth lynchings. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Learning from Place: Rondo Tour
DESCRIPTION:Learning from Place: Rondo Tour is a bus tour comprised of ten historic sites\, a walking tour of Rondo Plaza\, and a unique opportunity to be engaged in a service project with the Hallie Q. Brown Center. The bus and walking tour will be guided by Marvin Anderson a resident who is acknowledged as “the Godfather” of Rondo. This event begins and concludes at the historic Hallie Q. Brown Center with a presentation and tour led by Benny Roberts\, Executive Director. \nHistorically\, the Rondo Neighborhood has taken pride in its Black owned businesses\, churches\, schools\, and the significance of being of service to neighbors when in need. During the mid-1950s\, the construction of Interstate 94 began the devastation that divided the community physically and economically. SUMMARY:Minneapolis - Learning from Place: Somali Cedar Riverside
DESCRIPTION:Cedar Riverside is the heart of the East African community in Minneapolis and home to one of the largest Somali populations in the United States. Over time\, Somali Minnesotans have shaped the neighborhood into a vibrant cultural corridor filled with businesses\, mosques\, and gathering spaces where community life unfolds each day. \nParticipants will begin at Brian Coyle Community Center and hear from respected community leader Halimo Ainte\, who will share reflections on Somali migration\, community building\, and the transformation of Cedar Riverside into a thriving East African neighborhood. Participants will also visit neighborhood spaces such as a local mosque and nearby businesses that serve as everyday gathering places. \nThe experience includes a Somali coffee ceremony that reflects the tradition of roasting spices as a vehicle for welcome\, conversation\, and connection. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Learning from Place: Little Africa Plaza
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota is home to a vibrant and growing African diaspora representing many countries\, languages\, and cultural traditions. In St. Paul\, Little Africa has emerged as a cultural corridor where this diversity is expressed and rooted through entrepreneurship\, community leadership\, art\, and food. \nParticipants will gather at Little Africa Plaza and hear from community leaders and culture bearers about the vision behind the new development and the role of African entrepreneurs in shaping the corridor. The experience will include a cooking demonstration featuring injera\, the traditional Ethiopian flatbread and food samples. Through this experience\, participants will learn how food traditions carry stories of family\, culture\, and community. \nParticipants will also visit the African Museum\, Art and Culture Center\, where they will learn about ongoing efforts to elevate African art within the Little Africa cultural corridor and explore opportunities to support this vision through volunteer and event participation. \nK-12 Educators will receive 3 clock hours upon completion of the event. \nThis experience is presented in collaboration with African Economic Development Solutions (AEDS)\, a non-profit organization that supports African immigrant entrepreneurs and has helped advance the vision for Little Africa Plaza and the surrounding cultural corridor. \nRegistration\nTHIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT.

DESCRIPTION:The We Are Water MN traveling exhibit examines water issues statewide and in local communities through personal stories\, histories\, and scientific information. It strengthens Minnesotans’ relationships with water\, exposes visitors to new perspectives\, and increases participation in water stewardship activities. \nHost Partner: Anoka County Library \nWe Are Water MN will round out its 2026 tour at the Northtown Library in Blaine! Anoka County Libraries exist to serve their communities and connect them to resources and learning\, and We Are Water MN is no exception\, bringing water education and engagement to the library. Fun fact: Anoka County is the 4th largest county in the state of Minnesota\, comprised of over 360\,000 residents! SUMMARY:St. Paul - Celebrating Native Language and Culture Through the Joy of Games
DESCRIPTION:Put the cell phones away and join us for an evening of fun\, food\, and cultural connection. As we recognize National Native American Heritage Month\, the Minnesota Humanities Center welcomes Tony Drews and Nashke Native Games for a lively\, intergenerational game night. \nUnlike mainstream board games that reflect dominant cultural experiences\, Nashke Native Games centers Ojibwe language\, stories\, and values\, offering a playful way to engage with culture\, strengthen family and community bonds\, and support language preservation. The evening begins with conversation over a light dinner provided by an Indigenous caterer followed by gameplay that is certain to be fun – and educational – for all. \nGuests will also have a chance to participate in a drawing for prizes\, including items from Nashke Native Games and books from Native American Lives\, the Minnesota Humanities Center’s biography series highlighting Native voices. One title\, “Charles Albert Bender: National Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher\,” tells the story of Bender and his passion for baseball – a reminder that games\, in all forms\, bring people together. \nWhether you come with family\, friends\, or on your own\, you’ll leave with new words\, fresh insights\, and a deeper appreciation for the power of play in preserving culture and fostering connection. Each household will also receive an Ojibwe game to take home and continue learning together.
