SUMMARY:St. Paul - Metro Indian Education Fall Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Fall Metro Indian Education Gathering at the Minnesota Humanities Center. Anyone connected to American Indian Education and/or American Indian students is welcome to attend.  \nAs part of our Fall Gathering format\, the program will include updates and announcements from Annie Huberty\, Director of American Indian Education at the Minnesota Department of Education\, followed by updates from the Indian Education for All (IEFA) team. Additional program details\, including any other featured speakers\, will be shared as they are confirmed. \nAbout the Metro Indian Education Gathering\nThe Metro Indian Education Gathering is a network of urban American Indian educators who come together twice each year to build relationships\, share ideas\, discuss challenges\, and celebrate successes. Since January 2013\, these gatherings have provided opportunities for networking\, professional learning\, and connecting with colleagues who can help navigate the policies\, practices\, and opportunities that support American Indian Education programs. \nBeginning in 2026\, the gatherings follow a consistent format: the Fall Gathering features updates and presentations on topics relevant to American Indian Education\, while the Spring Gathering is centered on facilitated small-group conversations that encourage dialogue\, collaboration\, and the exchange of ideas. \nThe Metro Indian Education Gathering is coordinated by Robin Nelson\, American Indian Curriculum Specialist for ISD 622. SUMMARY:St. Paul - Celebrating Ojibwe Language and Culture Through Games
DESCRIPTION:Put the cell phones away and join us for an evening of fun\, food\, and cultural connection. As we recognize National Native American Heritage Month\, the Minnesota Humanities Center welcomes Tony Drews and Nashke Native Games for a lively\, intergenerational game night. \nNashke Native Games centers Ojibwe language\, stories\, and values\, offering a playful way to engage with culture\, strengthen family and community bonds\, and support language preservation. The evening begins with conversation over a light dinner provided by an Indigenous caterer\, followed by gameplay that is certain to be fun—and educational—for all. \nGuests will also have a chance to participate in a drawing for prizes\, including items from Nashke Native Games and books from Native American Lives\, the Minnesota Humanities Center’s biography series highlighting Native voices. One title\, “Charles Albert Bender: National Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher\,” tells the story of Bender and his passion for baseball – a reminder that games\, in all forms\, bring people together. \nWhether you come with family\, friends\, or on your own\, you’ll leave with new words\, fresh insights\, and a deeper appreciation for the power of play in preserving culture and fostering connection. Each household will also receive an Ojibwe game to take home and continue learning together. Everyone is welcome—families\, educators\, and community members ages 10 and up. \nFollowing the event\, Nashke Native Games will have additional games and educational resources available for purchase. \nK-12 Educators will receive 2 clock hours upon completion of the event. \nRegistration\n$15 for adults. $10 for children 10 and under. SUMMARY:St. Paul - We the People: Bringing Civic Learning to Life
DESCRIPTION:How can we help students develop the knowledge\, skills\, and confidence to participate in civic life? \nJoin the Minnesota Humanities Center for a free\, daylong professional learning workshop exploring We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution\, the Center for Civic Education’s nationally recognized civic education program. \nDesigned for upper elementary through high school educators\, this interactive workshop offers an opportunity to experience We the People firsthand and explore how its curriculum and instructional approach can strengthen civic learning. The day will include a presentation from a humanities scholar connecting broader questions of history\, identity\, and civic life to the idea of “We the People\,” along with an introduction to inquiry-based learning and how the program supports it. \nParticipants will explore the curriculum and its connections to Minnesota social studies standards\, hear practical insights from experienced educators and program leaders\, and get a taste of one of the program’s signature elements through a fun introduction to simulated congressional hearings. \nWhether you are interested in bringing the full We the People program to your students or simply looking for new strategies and resources to enrich your teaching\, this workshop is a chance to explore what the program has to offer. Participation does not commit you or your school to implementing We the People. Come learn\, ask questions\, and consider what might be useful for your students and classroom. \nThe Minnesota Humanities Center serves as the Minnesota State Coordinator for the Center for Civic Education and is working to expand opportunities for high-quality civic education throughout the state. \nEducators will receive 8 clock hours.  \nRegistration\nThis event is free\, however registration is required.
