Minnesota Humanities Center

K-12 Education

Helping teachers teach and learners learn more deeply and inclusively.

Why K-12 Education

Through partnerships with students, educators, and communities, the Minnesota Humanities Center is working to ensure an empowering educational experience for all learners — and that educators are equipped to develop classrooms where every student can thrive.

Creating a Just Society Through K-12 Education Programming

Schools are where students begin to explore who they are, examine the world around them, and develop the critical thinking and civic understanding needed for meaningful participation in community life. A well–educated population is vital to the health, safety, economic prosperity, and longevity of our society.

Our programs work at both the system and classroom levels, reimagining what inclusive, culturally grounded education can look like — from district leadership to everyday instruction.

Our Priorities

Improve Humanities Education

Collaborate with educators, scholars, and community leaders to co-create professional development, materials, and curriculum. Host events to share and exchange educational best practices. Partner with youth-centered organizations to ensure student voice drives educational change.

Create Responsive Programs

Develop culturally responsive teaching and learning practices that reflect Minnesota’s racially and ethnically diverse histories and communities. Focus areas include Social and Ethnic Studies, Indigenous Education, and Civics — ensuring all students feel seen, valued, and engaged.

Elevate and Advance K-12 Education

Convene Superintendents, district leaders, and school board members to address urgent challenges in education. Pursue national funding, including from the NEH, to expand access to high-quality, humanities-based learning statewide.

“Most significantly the experience has imprinted on me the necessity to hold myself, my content and our education system to a standard that honors humanity and tells the truths that are necessary.”
