Learning from Place

About Learning from Place

When you join one of our Learning From Place experiences, you learn in ways that are not available in a library or classroom. Being immersed in new surroundings engages our senses of sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste, allowing us to connect deeply with the vibrant and diverse cultures and histories that make up the tapestry of our state.

Whether you choose to stand on sacred Indigenous ground on a Bdote tour, taste the offerings of a restaurant you have never heard of before, or walk quietly into a house of worship to be enveloped in the peace and tranquility of an unfamiliar religion, our immersive experiences will ground you in history, tradition, and community.

Our Learning From Place experiences are offered publicly and are also available as private tours.

The Learning from Place Experience

While each Learning from Place offering is unique, participants can always expect to learn from and with members of the community represented. Each offering is built with input, consultation, and collaboration from the host community.

Participants can expect to leave the experience with:

  • A deeper understanding of the host community.
  • Greater awareness of how exclusion from historical narratives impact communities.
  • Increased reflection on one’s own conscious and unconscious biases.
  • Tools and resources to engage students, colleagues, or community members in a fuller, more accurate history of Minnesota and the Twin Cities.

Learning from Place offerings can involve up to one mile of walking/hiking, periods of standing, and some, if not all, time spent outdoors. Learning from Place offerings take place rain or shine. Participants should dress appropriately and wear comfortable footwear.
