Online – Content Session – World History Eras: Framing the Big Questions

How do things change over time, and what can we learn by examining those changes? This introductory session explores approaches to teaching world history that center inquiry, historical thinking, and multiple perspectives across time and place. Historian Trevor Getz will introduce key concepts—including change and continuity over time, connecting the global and local, and examining history at different scales—that will frame the World History Eras series. Using examples from agriculture, complex societies, the Islamic world, revolutions, imperialism, and environmental change, he will model inquiry-based approaches and share classroom resources. Dr. Getz will then join Katharine Gerbner in conversation about the ideas and questions that will guide educators throughout the series.
Trevor R. Getz is a Professor of African and World History at San Francisco State University and Past President of the World History Association. His work in history education includes lead roles in projects completed for Khan Academy, the OER Project, Washington DC State Board of Education, and New York City Board of Education. He is the author or co-author of eleven volumes, including Abina and the Important Men, which won the 2014 James Harvey Robinson Prize. Trevor creates world history comics for the New York Civics For All Comic Group and is co-lead for the open-source agentive-AI history archive HistoryGenie. He builds historical buildings in Lego, plays with trains, and is the recipient of the American Historical Association’s 2020 Eugene Asher Distinguished Teaching Award.
All Content Sessions will be held via Zoom and supported through a Minnesota Department of Education (MDE)-hosted Canvas learning community. Registered participants will have access to session recordings, curated resources, and collaborative planning tools through the Canvas course.
High school World History teachers and 8th grade educators are encouraged to participate in companion Pedagogy Sessions, which explore inquiry-based instructional approaches and classroom applications for each era.
This offering is part of Navigating the World History Eras: Content, Pedagogy, and Inquiry in the Classroom, a yearlong professional learning opportunity presented by MHC and MDE that supports implementation of Minnesota’s 2021 K–12 Academic Standards in Social Studies.
K-12 Educators will receive 1.5 clock hours upon completion of the event.
