St. Paul – We the People: Bringing Civic Learning to Life

How can we help students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to participate in civic life?

Join the Minnesota Humanities Center for a free, daylong professional learning workshop exploring We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution, the Center for Civic Education’s nationally recognized civic education program.

Designed for current high school educators (grades 9-12), this interactive workshop offers an opportunity to experience We the People firsthand and explore how its curriculum and instructional approach can strengthen civic learning. The day will include a presentation from a humanities scholar connecting broader questions of history, identity, and civic life to the idea of “We the People,” along with an introduction to inquiry-based learning and how the program supports it.

Participants will explore the curriculum and its connections to Minnesota social studies standards, hear practical insights from experienced educators and program leaders, and get a taste of one of the program’s signature elements through a fun introduction to simulated congressional hearings.

Whether you are interested in bringing the full We the People program to your students or simply looking for new strategies and resources to enrich your teaching, this workshop is a chance to explore what the program has to offer. Participation does not commit you or your school to implementing We the People. Come learn, ask questions, and consider what might be useful for your students and classroom.

The Minnesota Humanities Center serves as the Minnesota State Coordinator for the Center for Civic Education and is working to expand opportunities for high-quality civic education throughout the state.

Educators will receive 8 clock hours.

This event is free, however registration is required. A limited number of overnight accommodations are available at MHC’s Event Center on November 17 for educators who may be traveling from outside the Twin Cities.
