Minnesota Humanities Center

Public Programming

Creating spaces to deepen understanding.

Why Public Programming

At large and small public events throughout Minnesota, we showcase storytelling and writing, encourage personal reflection, and convene critical conversations to help Minnesotans examine the common and unique experience of being human through some of the most pressing and difficult issues in society.

Creating a Unified Society Through Public Programming

The humanities help us recognize and appreciate the many dimensions of our lives and the examples of excellence within our society.

A strong society values all people and honors their stories to achieve a better understanding of its past, improve navigation of its present, and shape its future. By fostering a climate of imagination, inquiry, and open dialogue, we cultivate a vibrant and thriving democracy strengthened by the wisdom of its people.

The impact of the humanities on people and society is life-changing and transformational. In partnering with individuals, creatives, scholars, organizations and institutions to co-create accessible humanities programming, we offer a range of opportunities to deepen our collective understanding of ourselves, our communities, and our histories.

Our Priorities

Humanities Relevance & Access

Deepen humanities engagement in all corners of the state by delivering compelling, varied, and high-quality offerings.

Broaden Connections

Amplify the stories of communities and organizations to generate ideas, foster innovation, make better-informed decisions, and solve problems.

Respectful Exchange of Ideas

Conduct programs, offerings, and events examining difficult and pressing issues in a manner that serves as a model for how people resolve problems.

“We cannot legislate; we cannot purchase; we cannot command; and we cannot hope that these issues rectify themselves. It will take intentional, focused discussions to change the hope into the realization of the results we can achieve.”
